"Heya Girls!"
The most important fashion statement of the last months was the omnipresent face mask. But believe me, women, real fashion still exists despite Corona. And this week there will even be a real Fashion Week in Vienna again. Nothing digital but very real. Yeah okay, there are not as many shows as usual in the tent in front of the MQ and not many designers from abroad will attend. It will be smart anyway. And pop-up stores are opening, too, of course – it would be mean if you could only look! But because the textile industry is now considered the second largest polluter in the world after the oil and gas industry, there is an urgent need to re-think matters. More billions of tons of CO2 are emitted annually for clothing production than by international shipping and air traffic. The Future X Days on September 4 are therefore dedicated to the topic of sustainable fashion and the responsibility of the fashion industry in times of climate crisis. For one thing is clear: it is no longer possible to continue as before.

Wishing you a smart week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Michael Nichols: Wild
Jane Goodall has strongly influenced him in his work, he is also known as the Indiana Jones of photography: Michael Nichols is currently a guest at the Museum of Natural History with his exhibition “Wild”. There are impressive nature photographs to marvel at, all of which carry the personal Nichols touch: incredibly close. The Serengeti lions are almost jumping at you, and you are practically stomping through the river with the baby elephant (grin). The unprettified truth is put in front of the lens, and it is wild, dangerous and sometimes even cute: the famous picture “Surfing Hippo” is also there ;-)

Strandhase
The debut album “Primetime” is still very fresh – and can be heard live on stage at WUK today: “Strandhase” are four boys, who turn indie rock into a musical tumult of rock'n'roll, jazz, good funk and not always serious lyrics. With the song “Paloma” they have succeeded in creating a poppy catchy tune, but they can also be quite different. A lot of dark humor (a must-have for Viennese bands) has “Chlorwasser trinken”, which denounces the state of society and the world in a bitterly wicked but clever way. Conclusion after listening: potentially your new favorite band!

SHOHEI at Maisonette
Hush, this is still pretty much a secret in Austria: the young label SHOHEI, already successful abroad, will comes to the concept store “Maisonette” for three days. After jobs at Vivienne Westwood and All Saints, Carinthian Lisa Pek founded the brand in Japan. Her origami inspired oversize blouses and tops in asymmetrical cuts have already been shown in Vogue and Elle. Starting today, she presents her minimalist Essentials collection of innovative, loose fabrics at the pop-up. Extra highlights are some unique pieces of her kimono collection from Kyoto

Queer Street Festival
Very colourful, very queer, very nice! The street festival “Andersrum ist nicht verkehrt” is putting up its stage at the Naschmarkt this year and presents queer artists for three days. Powerful start today is “Kleinkunstprinzessin” alias Grazia Patricia, a comedy drag queen. Headliner on Thursday is singer-songwriter Virginia Ernst (her songs “Rockin” and “Soldier” were played on the radio nonstop), today several musicians are going in search of Viennese pop. There are nine acts to be seen until Saturday and all concerts are free of charge, from dancing drag queens to singing show talents.

Silvia Gattin Open Air Flea Market
The stock sale for Boho fashion and ethnically inspired clothing by designer Silvia Gattin takes place only today at an open-air flea market. Special fabrics (sustainably and fairly produced) make her handbags made of Moroccan carpets and ponchos made of mohair blankets into coveted fashion souvenirs. In addition, the flea market offers second hand and vintage clothing, practical reversible bags from “Rumpeltasche” made from old sails and tarpaulins, fresh bread, flowers and wine. And for the coming fairs, the aprons from “Schürzenjägerin” will spice up every Dirndl.

 Wiener Kabarett Festival
Vienna Cabaret Festival
One more day of cracking jokes and the Cabaret Festival at the Vienna City Hall will be over. The prelude to today's finale is Lisa Schmid, who qualified for the big performance in a competition. Her program “Ehrengrab” scratches heavily at the coffin lid of dear death – including a “pretty body”. Afterwards Eva Marold turns everything into the opposite in “Vielseitig desinteressiert”: an elephant into a mosquito and suitable problems for every solution. Viktor Gernot proves to the audience that the cliché “Don't you agree?” can have just as many meanings as “Oida”.

25hours meets Markterei: in the park
Well, hopefully it will stop raining soon, because this feasting revelry requires dry weather! For Markterei will be coming to the park in front of the 25hours Hotel – with market stalls, street food and bars. Between organic fries, fusion kitchen sandwiches, grilled food from Jacobo and French boulangerie sins from Paremi, it’s safe to say that no foodie dream will remain unfulfilled. And while you are there, you can also get your weekend shopping done: You can buy delicacies from smoked fish by Hissek to chocolates from Bitter Süß to slow food bread. Cool!

Special Train Anniversary
The past charm of a mundane train ride is revived today. On the 60th anniversary of the special ÖBB diesel locomotive 2020.01 “Grand Madame”, passengers chug from Vienna to Mistelbach in a special train. On the tour “Around Vienna” in original wagons from the 50s, routes are taken that are no longer covered systematically by public transport. Dancing- and Heurigen wagons also travel with us ;-) In Mistelbach, suckling pig and grilled chicken are served at the Heizhaus party. You can also take the nostalgic train back home – or the S-Bahn for less money.

DON’s Opera-Pop-up
It is well known that CitySpotterGirl is a fan of Bernie Rieder. That's why she is of course all the more pleased that he is finally cooking in Vienna again. And then right at a prominent place: From today until the end of October a culinary pop-up will be held in the columned hall of the State Opera. There you can enjoy snacks but also fine Austrian cuisine – regardless of whether you attend an opera performance or not. In the arcades outside there is a day bar, in the evening the creative chef spoils you with 3-course menus in the columned hall.

Mal – Embriaguez Divina
Choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas is known for expressive dance productions and great stage art. Her very latest performance “Mal – Embriaguez Divina” can be seen for the last time today during the Vienna Festival Weeks at the Museumsquartier. Translated “Evil – Divine Rapture”, the piece burrows in the field of “evil”: the demonisation of women, social evils, but also facets that are not classically thought of as evil, such as the animalistic aspects of the animal world and the violence of nature. A play with intense stage sets, carnival-like sequences and grotesque grimaces.

Checking out Libelle at MQ
Vienna as we have never seen it before: On Friday the Libelle was officially opened in the MuseumsQuartier. The area of our favourite urban living room was basically extended into the sky. High up on the roof of the Museum Leopold, in addition to the event hall called Libelle, a huge terrace of almost 1,000 square meters was created. It is open to everyone (free of charge) – you can either chill out in an unusual ambience or get food and drinks at the kiosk. Above all, however, you have a sensational view of Vienna. Tip: Around 19:00 the light is at its best!

Post-war Vienna on film
Believed forgotten and later fortunately rediscovered: “Wienerinnen – Schrei nach Liebe” from the 1950s was miles ahead of its time thanks to its modern film language. Celebrated after his death, Kurt Steinwendner shows the Vienna of rascals, brick workers, drunkards and prostitutes on the outskirts of the city. This was met with little approval in Austria: too gloomy, the women too revealing and the picture compositions too playful. Five stories about young women are told featuring unhappy love, suffering and jealousy. Everyday life in post-war Vienna as contemporary cinema!

Soia: Stories from Vienna
What a brilliant idea! Soul pop singer Soia visited old people's homes from Ottakring to Penzing and listened to the stories of the residents – people who clearly have interesting things to tell. The encounters resulted in a music album with funny, serious and, true to Viennese tradition, morbid lyrics. At the Café “Vollpension” the Viennese stories will be presented live today: musically speaking the songs are a mix of Viennese folk sounds, jazz and singer-songwriter. Also on display is the photo exhibition of the up-to-the-minute photographer Ina Aydogan.

Wonder.Woman.Being
Sometimes loud and sometimes quiet, there's this nasty little voice whispering negative things to us. These inhibiting beliefs and obstructive body images are actively addressed in the 5-day retreat with Brigitte Schlegel and body therapist Sabine Parzer. Through a mix of methods from holistic dance, body and conversation exercises, the participants explore their own images of femininity, beauty and self-confidence. You dance, paint, write and reflect, both alone and in groups, in order to grow completely into yourself. Takes place inside and outside!

Blackberry Sky
The artist Sonia Gansterer drew her inspiration from the poem “Abschied” by lyricist Else Lasker-Schüler. The line “I coloured the sky blackberry for you” is the colour concept of the exhibition and the title for her work summary presented today as a book. Colours flow into each other and the realistic portraits literally drip from her fingers. With a foundation of coffee brew, the artist gives the paintings an additional restless base, which hardly allows her to draw a straight line. Lightness meets melancholy and sweetness meets morbidity. Worth seeing!

Soap & Skin
When Anja Plaschg alias Soap & Skin sings, you feel something inside. The “wunderkind” from Styria is one of the biggest domestic musical discoveries of the last few years. Her powerful timbre can be heard tonight at the Konzerthaus. Her pop, combined with calm electronics is accompanied by a small orchestra of piano, violin and trumpet. A stirring concert, because her songs tell and recount very personal stories: pain, loss, but also beautiful feelings like hope and healing. While listening, the world fades away a little bit.

Der Greißler
Waste reduction is in everyone’s mouth, the crazy amount of packaging in particular produces tons of waste in Vienna every day. The counter-movement is called “unpackaged” – and the newest unpackaged store has just opened in Margaretenstraße. Whether rice, couscous, flour or oil: at the Greissler, you fill everything into containers you brought along yourself. Most of the super-pretty veggies come from Vienna's veggie variety queen Eveline Bach, the bread comes from the Kasses bakery in the Waldviertel. Even tahini, toothpaste and almond paste are available without packaging.

Ma Belle
For all those who like coq au vin, from now on there is only one address in Vienna and it is called Ma Belle. The mixture of bistro, bar and cafe is chicly furnished, but despite the elegance, it is super casual and friendly here. In addition to the dazzling rooster stew, many different kinds of breakfast are served as well as traditional French dishes: snails, fish soup and bœuf bourguignon. For lunch there is also a cheap menu and quiches. The owners are not French, but fans of the French bistro cuisine. And you can tell. Rarely have I experienced so much Parisian flair outside of Paris!
