"Heya Girls!"
679 men and eight women. That is the reality of the painting gallery of the Museum of Art History: the entire inventory includes exactly 679 male painters and eight female artists. And that is the reality of every classical museum in the whole world – all you ever get to see is art painted by men for men. And that is why the new edition of the terrific “Ganymed”-series, where famous authors are invited once again to write texts about one master piece of the gallery each, is so exciting. Starting February 18th, the GANYMED FE MALE will be leading a tour through the Museum of Art History from a feminist perspective. Actors, musicians and dancers will then be presenting the art pieces in the middle of the museum. The celebrated British writer Zadie Smith (photo) has drawn up a text to the “Old Woman” painted by Balthasar Denner, Katharina Stemberger will be performing “We should all be feminists” in front of Tizian and the dancer Esther Balfe together with her ensemble will be interpreting the suicide of Cleopatra by Guido Cagnacci. All of them looking for the female aspect at the Museum of Art History!

Wishing you a beautiful week

modus vivendi flea market
The designer-duo has been going through hard times for a while at their location at the Esterhazypark because of the wild renovating-action of the landlord. And that is a great reason to sell their pretty fashion at another location. These days, they will be at the flea market in the seventh district, where sample parts, archive pieces, vintage and exclusive fashion will be available at wonderful bargain-prices. Some of it even comes from “special guests”: fashion from Pregenzer, glasses from Robert La Roche, unusual shoes from Rosa Mosa and fine scarves from Wubet.

Mnozil Brass “Yes, yes, yes!”
The gentlemen from Mnozil Brass have been delighting their audience for over twenty years with their “lived brass band music”.  With the program “Yes, Yes, Yes!”, the famous septet is brassing up the audience tonight at the Konzerthaus with awesome original compositions and cover songs. And how! The incredible synergy of the band is just as fascinating as the infectious choreographies and the irrepressible need to improvise. And the charming brass players are definitely entertaining as well: slapstick meets black humor; and listening just makes you happy through and through. Listen in here!

“Cooks in Residence” with Lukas Nagl
Now, this is something the CitySpotterGirl likes: to eat awesome food from a top chef from her hometown! The HEUER at Karlsplatz has invited the shooting star Lukas Nagl from Schörfling to be the “Cook in Residence”. Last year, “Fogo Island Inn”- head chef Murray McDonald brought the culinary treasures of Newfoundland to the Karlsplatz. And this year the gastronomic event-series is being continued; for three days, the young gourmet chef from Upper Austria will be creating an exciting and purist 5-course-meal with regional ingredients – a lot of it cooked over open fire or smoked in the ground.

Habsburg’s most powerful woman
She was never voted to be Empress or even crowned – but she is still known to everybody as Empress Maria Theresia. The archduchess of Austria was undoubtedly a powerful ruler and because of her strong personality, she has always been a projection surface for different images of women. On the occasion of her 300th birthday, a big show is dedicated to her. The exhibition shows Maria Theresia as the most powerful ruler of the Habsburg Empire, but also as a singer (!), mother, wife and a devout catholic. Her success and reforms are put into the spotlight just as much as her crisis and wars.

Schikaneder
When it comes to musicals, people often have very different opinions. Many find the singing and dancing on stage to be just awful. But before someone stops to read this: Schikaneder is really, really great – even for those of you who don’t like musicals! The audience is carried off to the colorful Viennese theater world during the end of the 18th century through romantic, funny, but also serious and moving scenes. Because it is about the turbulent love story of Emanuel and Eleonore Schikaneder – and without them, “The Magic Flute” would have never happened.

art up your life
Now, this is a great slogan for an art workshop: “Take your broken heart, make it into art”. Artist Astrid Steinbrecher, who came up with the slogan, was inspired by Meryl Streep’s recent speech at the Golden Globes. During today’s course, the participants can dedicate themselves to the small and big wounds of their hearts and express the positive and strengthening side of it. What kind of material you use to work with is absolutely up to your personal preferences, be it wood, paper, soapstone or wires – to create baskets, light objects, sculptures, images and surprises.

Flea market at the Werkstatt
A pleasant private-flea market including many retro-pieces to browse through! Christian Kahrer’s costume and masquerade workshop in the fourteenth district is turning into a treasure trove of pieces from the 1970s to the 2000s that have become hip again. The colorful pick’n’mix is for sale at low prices and includes many things that should not be thrown away: books, dishes, vinyls, videos, CDs, music cassettes, vintage clothes and all kinds of knick-knacks. All pieces were collected by the four organizers, who are all, more or less accidentally, part of the art and creativity scene. Very nice!

Jewish humor – weepingly funny
A little warm-up for the Jewish stand-up comedy night: What is a psychiatrist? A doctor, who can’t see blood ;-) Very fitting here, because the Israeli comedian Jacob Klein is not only a humor-coach but also an expert on positive psychology. And he knows that you should not bow your head when you are in trouble up to your neck (Watch out, a joke to think about!) Tonight he will be joking at the Viennese Synagogue about the Jewish day-to-day life including the clan, rabbis, mothers and other troubles and also fine-humorist stuff from Talmud to Kishon. Egon Schiele
He was only 28 when he died but he left behind a legacy of more than 330 paintings and 2500 drawings. Egon Schiele’s masterpieces that he created in just 10 years are passionate, merciless and always a little bit mysterious, his biggest topic being the existential loneliness of human beings. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, the Albertina is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to him, including 180 of his most impressive gouaches and drawings. Most of them are part of the in-house collection of the Albertina, but there are also loans from other museums. Vernissage is today!

Women’s power-visit from England! The CitySpotterGirl is recommending the elegant Hotel Park Hyatt for tonight’s after work-chill out under the influence of alcohol. Because there, at the “The Bank”-Bar, a charming and very young barkeeper will be mixing extraordinary cocktails (only for one night!). It’s always the same: the Mochi-guys open a new location and right from the start they get flooded with customers.
