"Heya Girls!"
How on earth is she doing that? Bea Johnson is one of the heroes of the decade for me. The icon of the zero waste movement manages to pack the waste of her family of four into one big jam glass. And I’m talking about the waste of a whole year! In Austria, we produce 600 kg of waste a year – per person. And no, Bea Johnson is not living in the woods and doesn’t wear a penitential robe. When she moved from the French countryside to America as a young girl, she even lived the “bigger is better” lifestyle for a while. With a huge house and loads of trash. Later, when she moved house, Johnson suddenly realised how much waste she and her family produced and she started to search for ways out of the pile of rubbish. With her book “Zero Waste Home“ she became the pioneer of an entire movement. Next week she’ll hold a lecture in the EU parliament and then in Vienna in the Gartenbaukino, where she’ll also answer questions from the audience. And my current favourite film “Tomorrow – All over the globe, solutions already exist“ will be screened as well. Go there, ladies!
Wishing you a clean week

Fashion show Barbara Alli
Colourful, loud and cool – today’s fashion week show by Barbara Alli is definitely going to be a highlight! Born in Ghana and grown up in Nigeria, the Viennese-by-choice combines European and African elements. The result: eye-turner fashion made of flamboyant African fabrics in hot styles. By the way, everything is produced in Nigeria and Ghana. Colourful accessories such as hats or necklaces add that little extra to each outfit, turning even simple designs into original pieces. Even more African flair on the runway is provided by a group of drummers today. Yeah!

So gorgeously beautiful that it makes us – not kneel down – but sit down! The Italian furniture manufacturer Mattiazzi is internationally known for its beautifully shaped wooden chairs. Now the designforum Wien for the first time displays the works of top-class Mattiazzi designers such as Konstantin Grcic or Jasper Morrison. In the creatively staged exhibition visitors may observe the contemporary chair design on pictures taken in Italian villas – but they may also test-sit on the exhibited models. A must for design fans!

Meet the Chef – James Ferguson
Mesdames, today’s recommendation: dinner in the casino! In the award-winning restaurant there, chef James Ferguson takes his guests on a culinary journey to his native country Belgium. Ferguson loves to cook with regional products – a passion given to him by his mum from Belgium who used to cook with fresh ingredients from the neighbouring farmers only. On the menu tonight: the Belgium national dish Moules frites – mussels with original Belgium fries, bread pudding and more. What a nice change! And after dinner you can still try your luck at the roulette table ;-)

Wienwoche 2016: “Forever Together“
Connection, love and friendship – important ingredients for a peaceful coexistence in town! Starting today, the Wienwoche-Festival comes up with many free events which encourage people to train and to experience solidarity. The opening is celebrated today with the “The Red Love“, a play from Belgrade about the revolutionary idea of love. The festival also shows unknown sides of Vienna – for example in a multiple-stage theatre, leading to the places of homeless women or in an extensive stroll through the 16th and 17th district in the footsteps of Yugoslav immigrant workers. Plus: performances, music and dance.
Different locations in Vienna. September 16-25. Participation free of charge. Web

15 Years of Ink Music
Indie insiders surely know the record label Ink. Bands such as Garish, Panik or Bilderbuch have made it to the top of the charts thanks to the Ink tribe. Obviously, it is not without a reason that the CitySpotterGirl tells you this story exactly now – the label is celebrating its 15th anniversary at the WUK today with three (!) splendid live acts: the French jesters Yalta Club, the indie pop heroes Farewell Dear Ghost from Graz and – flown in from the North exclusively for this event – Blondage, the great favourite Danish band of the indie scene. Well then: shake, party and drink a toast to the independent music scene!

Sex in Vienna
Sex and the City from an historical point of view! The new exhibition “Sex in Vienna” quite explicitly addresses the relationship between city and sexuality, which is as sensual as it is scandalous. Drawing on numerous examples from the 19th century to the present, the exhibition conveys how the constant struggle between repression and freedom continues to mark every moment of a sexual encounter – right from the first seductive glance to the cigarette after. With (formerly) indecent “Viennese nudie” pictures, revealing posters and photos of “obscene women” it does the full monty ;-)

Community garden autumn festival
Today a public autumn festival is celebrated in the largest community garden of town, the neighbourhood garden Hetzendorf. The gardening hosts are as diverse as the crops grown on the 7,500-sqm-measuring green area. People of all ages and nationalities participate. For the party today, they cook and bake with everything the garden offers, they roast chestnuts, make flower bouquets and proudly present their plant beds. Very nice to see how much happiness and pleasure such a garden brings to the neighbourhood. The more city-dwellers get inspired, the better!

Streetlife Festival
Off to the streets, we make the town ours! This weekend, the Babenbergerstraße turns into an urban festival site: with street food corner, silly walk competition, urban knitting, the hip-hop combo Yasmo & die Klangkantine and free hugs. In the middle of the urban hustle the urban space market invites visitors to stay – and to shop local design. Not enough? FM4 organises a street game in order to save the last survivors of a plague and the Museum of Art History exhibits its old masters on the street. Let’s go to the largest living room in town!

The event starts at 6 pm, in a choice of different classes from rumba to Waltz you may rehearse the basic steps or try out something new for free. Stefan Sagmeister on beauty
After his incredibly successful exhibition “The Happy Show“, design icon Stefan Sagmeister is back in the MAK today. And he again addresses a subject that is rather “notorious” at the moment. Throughout most of the 20th and the 21st centuries, beauty has had a bad reputation: Most designers claim not to be interested in it, the contemporary art world has almost completely abandoned it, in architecture the term doesn’t exist any more. Stefan Sagmeister, who was born in Bregenz and is living in New York, will talk about why this antipathy is so unjustified and what we can do to reverse it. A plea for a comeback of beauty!

Oktoberfest pop up in the Grätzlhotel
Hip and jazzy, this way costume design is compatible even with the trendy Karmelitermarkt. In an Oktoberfest pop up store in the friendly Grätzlhotel, three labels show that Oktoberfest design is more than just flowery fabrics, Dirndl frills and mountain jackets. Gaudy offbeat pop Dirndl and shirts with humorous quotes à la “Mei Dirndl is in da Wäsch“ (My Dirndl is in the wash) by “Dirndlherz” and stylish “Von G'Wild“ shirts for your male companion. And with her original Dirndl chairs, Scottish kilt stools and other original costume furniture, the Carinthian designer Mandulis shows that costume doesn’t necessarily have to be clothes.

Bike expedition Goldschlagstraße
The Viennese cyclist community continues its triumph: The important main road Goldschlagstraße in the 15th district was reconstructed in a more bike-friendly way last year – and awarded the “Golden Spoke”. Since then the street is open to bikes all the way from Johnstraße to Neubaugürtel and on top of that, there’s a new Gürtel crossing at the beginning of Goldschlagstraße. This is also the starting point of a guided bike expedition taking place as part of the European mobility week today, in which cyclists can explore on bikeback what has been changed. Well then: Get on the bike!

„Killer-Tschick“ with Lilian Klebow
If you want to see SOKO Donau beauty Lilian Klebow live, here you go: Today the actress reads from the first SOKO Donau novel based on the popular TV series in the Lugner Cinema Lounge. The novel was certainly not written by the actress but by the author Gerhard Loibelsberger. The crime novel full of Viennese snide humour is about a dangerous killer cigarette, distributed amongst smokers on the Viennese black market by Chinese triads. Just as in the TV, it is Penny Lanz (acted by Lilian Klebow) and her team who investigate in the book. Signing session after the reading!

Burlesque class
The Viennese love burlesque! At least this impression has recently been given at the hot “Jazz Burlesque” show of the international star Rebecca Greenstein at Porgy&Bess. As of today, you can take classes in lascivious posing and “undressing or not undressing” with the master herself. In the class, you’ll not only develop charisma and presence, it’s also about the joy of slipping into new roles. Be it Hollywood diva or ice princess, candy girl or punk fairy, everything happens with style and elegance – and with a wink. The crowning glory: a performance on a real burlesque stage.

Qwstion Invites
Wow, this is huge! The brand-new store of the Swiss bag label Qwstion is brilliantly white and spacious. Obviously, the shop mainly sells the super-practical bags of the industrial designers Christian Kaegi and Fabrice Aeberhard. The bags are sturdy, changeable (the briefcase easily turns into a backpack!) and mainly made of organic cotton. In line with the minimalist design of the bags, the shop also stocks other hip labels that are rarely available in Vienna: sunglasses by Han Kjobenhavn, vases by New Tendency, perfumes by Laboratoria Olfattivo. And in the middle of the shop: a small coffeehouse. Hip!
