"Heya Girls!"
Now this is cool, of course, when an empty museum is hijacked in order to show art that usually happens far off legal spaces. The Wien Museum, which, as is generally known, is currently being remodeled and is already closed, will open its door for a last time – empty. More than 2,000sqm will become a playing area for street art and skateboarding – two subcultures that flourish on unused surfaces and challenge our understanding of public space. Street art covers everything from Puber-scribblings to the amazing Banksy. The initiative at the Wien Museum is called Takeover: more than 30 graffiti artists who have contributed to shaping the cityscape during the past 25 years take over the museum walls. Frau Isa will be there just as well as Chinagirl Tile (photo). In addition to that, the old exhibition architecture is transformed into a skate park with concrete and if you want you can learn how to spray like a pro during graffiti workshops. It’s for sure: the Wien Museum has never been this colourful before!

Wishing you a racy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Misia
Misia
She’s considered the anarchist of Fado: when Misia starts singing the melancholic Portuguese vocals, it always sounds like a completely new genre. As a pioneer in her field, she mixes Fado with “new” instruments like violin, harp or accordion and likes to fish in international music-waters every now and then. This has brought her to the most famous stages in the world, from the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra and the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris to the Town Hall in New York – and earned her numerous prizes. Tonight she evokes dreams of faraway longings.

 Hotel Daniel Vienna
Daniel BBQ Summernight
Barbecuing, slurping summer punch & eating outside: once again you can indulge in these wonderful summer-musts at the stylish Hotel Daniel. Every Thursday barbecue boss Manfred is hard at work there, the front yard is transformed into a chill oasis (and the Daniels know how to chill!) and accompanied by cool music they grill not only steaks and fish but also veggies like corn cobs. With that they serve baked potatoes, pita bread and salads as well as tasty, home-made sauces. Bad for your beach body but who cares ;-) The barbecue only takes place in dry weather, obviously.

Art and party are already a combination-dream come true, if you add outdoor and free entry to that, there is really no holding back. Ergo, the summer party of Belvedere21 will definitely pay off for friends of the arts and fizz: guided tours to the exhibitions Attersee, Achaintre and Bonvicini, and behind the scenes of the Wotruba depot, film screening about Ludwig Attersee and so on and so forth. Apart from the arts, they offer DJ-music, drinks, snacks, and the opportunity to dance under the open air in the sculpture garden. Why only once a year, though?

Omara Portuondo
This woman is dynamite! And now is possibly the last chance to see her live. Although, considering how lively and fit Omara Portuondo is, she doesn’t look 88 years old at all. The Cuban first performed as a 15-year-old dancer in the Club Tropicana. It was only afterwards that her singing career took off – but it’s been going a long time now: a tour with Nat King Cole, the only woman at “Buena Vista Social Club” and a Grammy. For her goodbye-tour, the melancholic singer comes to Vienna – and might just shed a tear when singing “Dos Gardenas”.

Japanese Summer Party
Moshimoshi! Japan, too, celebrates summer, namely at the Weltmuseum. An imperial Gagaku concert with dance and traditional costumes heralds the start of the 3-day-celebration on Friday at Heldenplatz, on Saturday traditional artisans produce silverware, cloth bags and bamboo curtains between the pillars of the museum hall. During the demonstration of Ikebana, the minimalistic art of arranging flowers, you can learn some tricks and tips. And on Sunday, you can admire the prettiest Japanese garments at the Kimono fashion show. Tanoshinde! Have fun!

Feldenkrais & Drawing at the Park
The soul, too, wishes for a holiday and recuperation, but please before you notice signs of exhaustion. Because at that point, it’s usually too late and the burn-out is knocking on the door. There are not one but two great methods for self-awareness, appreciation and creativity that are practised in combination outside today: the Feldenkrais session supports breathing, posture, exercise and feeling in a gentle way and broadens the perspective. And afterwards it can be put into practise at the outdoor-drawing event. Two times leaving one’s cares behind, coming right up!

Evening Cruise
How about this: finishing off the day totally relaxed in the here and now on a boat, enjoying the sunset from the open-air deck as cherry on top? For tonight’s evening sightseeing cruise, the MS Wien starts at the ship station Wien / City. From Schwedenplatz, you first sail down Donaukanal through the illuminated Viennese city centre. Then it’s on to the historical lockage Nußdorf and to the big Danube all the way to Reichsbrücke where the night sailors turn and go back to the start. And because so much romance makes you hungry, the ship restaurant offers refreshments ;-)

In den Gängen
Whew…with these temperatures, you can’t reasonably be expected outdoors before 21:00. How convenient that this is exactly the time that the numerous summer cinemas start. At least one open-air film per week is almost mandatory these days in Vienna. Today, the Kino am Dach (up at the Main Public Library) shows the multi-award-winning tragicomedy “In den Gängen”. The film tells a love story happening in the halls of an Eastern German market with an unfortunate Franz Rogowski and a lovely Sandra Hüller. Nature \ nature
Since real „pure nature” doesn’t really exist anymore in our technological world anymore but the longing for it gets bigger and bigger, there are constantly new nature forms created by people, consciously or unconsciously. Ten artists at Kunstraum Niederösterreich are currently dedicating themselves to these connections and are reflecting about new definitions of nature. How can biosphere and technology profit from one another? There is a lush moss landscape growing on top of a mountain of waste and a virtual Zen garden invites you to meditate. Nature in the age of the digital natives!

Old Music at St. Ruprecht
What did old music in all its variety sound like at its time according to the current scientific knowledge? Tonight, the “Ensemble Ornatus” consisting of recorder, vocals, fiddle and clavicymbalo (an ancestor of the cembalo) reconsts the subtle art of the Late Middle Ages with works by Solage, Johannes Ciconia and Baude Cordier. The whole thing gets even more authentic by the choice of location: the Ruprechtskirche as the oldest church in Vienna is even older than the performed pieces. According to legend, it was founded in the year of 740. In these old walls, the old sounds will be even more impressive than anywhere else.

Playing boules for free
The Hotel Zeitgeist at the Hauptbahnhof is not only a nice hotel for tourists to stay at but it’s also a nice spot for non-guests to chill or do sports. For the inner courtyard of the modern building has a cool, very green garden with sun loungers, equipment for gymnastics, a badminton court, Vienna’s smallest (!) golf court and now, brand-new, an area for playing boules, as well! You can borrow the boules balls for free at the reception. Now that’s pretty cool. And it’s much easier to withstand the heat in that shady courtyard.

Box Workshop
Crafting is relaxing, supports creativity and concentration and stimulates the brain cells – and it’s pretty much 100% the opposite of vegetating in front of the TV. Anna Frey’s DIY-courses are more than just a nice alternative to the TV, though: she’s a true artist when it comes to paper and cardboard and passes on her knowledge in today’s box workshop. You create a box with lid made of grey cardboard, line it with the finest natural paper and cover it with Japanese Chiyogami paper. You go home with a beautiful box – plus creative esprit.

Zum alten Knopfkönig
35 years ago, when she was in Fashion School, Martina Schrutka came shopping at Knopfkönig for the first time – now she’s behind the counter herself, offering yarn, wool, textiles, needles, zips and other tailor items. But the most extraordinary thing is the assortment of 8,000 buttons that they have for sale. Among them are true rarities, for example some made of ebony, coconut wood or glass, some are almost 100 years old! The shop with its long tradition, founded in 1844, has a new owner with Schrutka, who now continues the old business with its wonderful flair.

Mochi in the hood! CitySpotterGirl is overjoyed because the Mochi makers have opened a new venue in close proximity to her office. And as it’s typical for the Mochis, they are ahead of their time and ahead of all trends. At the small, dark food bar, only snacks are served, basically tapas – dishes from all over the world mixed together. Chinese yeast bread with Arabic humus, corn with Italian Tallegio and Japanese miso butter, pulpo with Canarian Mojo rojo sauce. This is already beyond fusion cuisine, that’s finally the food of the 21st century. And it’s simply pukka!
