"Heya Girls!"
This is going to be a farewell with pomp and circumstance! The Wien Museum employees call “Closing hour!” – and on 3 February, it will happen: the location at Karlsplatz will be closed due to a complete conversion. But before that, there will be one last excessive celebration: From 19 January, they grant free entry to the museum and offer a packed programme with guided tours, music and theatre. At “Sunday with Friends”, 12 Viennese celebrities (like Lotte Tobisch and Cecily Corti) lead visitors through the museum and present their personal highlights. The sexy “Schmusechor” makes the entire house swing, and the performance group Nesterval stages the Wien Museum opening night from anno 1959 as adventure. And to the “Festbankett”, they have invited Gustav Klimt, Maria Theresia, and Sigmund Freud. Dress code for viewers: evening gown or suit with mask! I myself won’t be able to be there, though. Because I travel to London on a CitySpotterGirl-trend-search. It’s all about life-long learning ;-) If you want you can follow my discoveries on Instagram: stadtspionin_wien. See you!

Wishing you a curious week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Art’s Birthday 2019
According to Robert Filliou, everything started on a 17 January a million years ago: a man took a dry sponge and dropped it into a bucket full of water. It is not important who that man was since he is dead but art is alive, said the French Fluxus artist in 1963 about the birth of art. Ever since then, “Art’s Birthday” is celebrated all over the world. Including Vienna, where art will be created live, and where art can be exchanged and enjoyed at ORF RadioKulturhaus on the occasion of the now 1,000,056th birthday of art. Even a piano robot joins in ;-)

The Maltese Falcon
To the cinema with President VdB: on the occasion of the film series “Wild Card”, the Votivkino regularly invites celebs to choose a film which is then shown in their presence. Today, Alexander Van der Bellen is a guest at the cinema, he chose the US-American crime film “The Maltese Falcon” (English original version) with Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor. In this film, two private investigators are tasked by a woman with tailing a shady character, soon afterwards there are murders happening. Afterwards there’s a talk about the film with the President!

Eistraum
Never before was there ice-skating on such a high level in front of the Rathaus ;-) Because for the first time, the “Eistraum” has a second level with an 850m2 ice terrace. Ice princesses can glide up and down via ramp. On ground level, too, there are 4 ice rinks to be used again, plus “Traumpfade” through the Rathaus park. Tonight seems convenient for test driving, since, first of all, it’s free and secondly, you can admire the impressive show of the British “Ice Glitz Productions”. Plus, the Viennese Women’s Ice Hockey team “EHV-Sabres” also demonstrates what’s possible on blades.

Wunderwerke
By now, around 8,000 women hang around in the Facebook group “Wiener Wunderweiber”, including many artists. One of them is Judit Fortelny, who had the idea for the first Wunderweiber exhibition. Eleven artists were picked – some well-known, others less so, who now present a variety of their works. Among the “Wunderwerke” are expressive-abstract collages, paintings, and delightful illustrations as well as figurative portraits. Vernissage is today, if you shy away from the women hurry-scurry you can also see the exhibition tomorrow and on Sunday.

In 80 Takten um die Welt
Ingenious: Jules Verne’s novel “Around the World in 80 Days” as basis for a brilliant musical project! Today at Musikverein, a salon orchestra follows in the footsteps of Phileas Fogg and his servant Passepartout together with the actor Cornelius Obonya as speaker. The ensemble presents the music of the corresponding country, from London to Brindisi, Calcutta, Hongkong, Chicago and back, in between Obonya will read from the novel. The musicians also stop in Vienna and play some traditional tunes, arrangements and originals from Verdi to Fisher.

Tea Salon at Palais Coburg
Keep calm and drink tea, and even the harshest winter will pass. For this purpose, ladies with style had best make their way to Afternoon Tea at the stately Palais Coburg. There, you can enjoy sweet smelling tea specialties from Superior Oolong to Jasmin Pearls, scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches & sweet, sip champagne, and revel in pure luxury. For instance when strolling through the marble portico or while gracefully striding below heavy chandeliers and gilded stucco. Plus, there’s live piano music playing. So: round up your girlfriends and kick up your heels like a queen!

 Kunst Haus Wien
Urban Stills
Great Sunday programme for amateur photographers! On the occasion of the exhibition “Stillleben. Eigensinn der Dinge”, the Kunst Haus is offering a workshop with photographer Kay von Aspern today. For the visual representation of inanimate or dead motives from flowers to everyday objects, aesthetical and often symbolic aspects, too, play a crucial role, but the arrangement is important as well. At today’s “still-life photography” tour in public, however, already existing motives will be photographed. The arrangers are every-day-life and city-life. Certainly surprising!

Franzobel “Rechtswalzer”
“2014. Future! Not present!” This note served as introduction to the manuscript that Franzobel handed in to his publisher pretty much exactly one year ago. Back then, the BVT-raid had not happened yet, Salvini was still just a provocative provincial politician and not the deputy prime minister of Italy, and there were no so-called self-defence militias patrolling in Bavaria. Everything the bestselling author meant to relegate into the distant future has quickly become very close, eerie! Today’s the first reading at the Porgy, accompanied by musician Thomas Gansch.

Fresh fish from the Adriatic – that’s the selling point of a new Dalmatian fish store in Neubau. Fish friends now have a two-fold reason to rejoice because until the end of January, you can haul in all their fish specialities (like bluefin tuna from the island Ugljan by Zadar) at a reduced rate of 30%. The bosses Ivo and Toni Bartulović have been in the fish trade for a long time and oversee several fish markets in Dalmatia. Fish and sea food are directly imported from Split to Vienna in one day. By the way, you can find more fish addresses in Vienna here, at the portal!

 Marina Cruz
Marina Cruz “Read between the lines”
An artist whose name you should remember: Marina Cruz is taking off world-wide right now. What’s unusual about it: the young Filipina draws incredibly realistic pictures of clothes to tell their story. She is working with items that were made by her grandmother and that were once worn by her mother and her siblings. The magnified details illustrate lines, patterns, designs, creases and even remnants of wear and tear of the fabric. Almost like a diary, only without words. Cruz’ impressive works are currently exhibited at Galerie Hilger.

Fix me if you can
Personal, touching and humorous: the wheelchair-bound performance artist Elisabeth Löffler’s “sit-down-comedy” invites you on a journey to her childhood. The Viennese native tells the story of a family in search of a miracle, a family that does everything in their power to offer their child a better future on two legs, from medical procedures to a journey to Lourdes. But Elisabeth is pursuing her very own mission, in the name of God and love, with the support of her personal painkiller Udo Jürgens. Definitely worth seeing!

A Bowie Celebration
If only it were a real revival! Unfortunately, nobody can bring the unforgettable David Bowie back to us. But today’s event at the Arena manages to at least musically revive the exceptional musician and his work. Behind it is Mike Garson, Bowie-keyboarder and the longest-standing band member. He has performed together with Bowie at his first and last concerts in the USA as well as at countless other gigs all over the world. Together with other former Bowie musicians and world-class singers, he’s giving us a mix of Bowie hits today. Sigh!

Whether Alma Mahler-Werfel, the Prater-paintress Tina Blau or the brilliant inventress Hedy Lamarr – all these amazing women have a connection to Wieden. Two literary evenings now put the focus on 6 unusual female artists. On Thursday, the texts read by Elisabeth Seethaler and Bettina Rossbacher at Amtshaus Wieden are all about Hedy Lamarr, Tina Blau, “painting housewife” Broncia Koller-Pinell and notorious author Ada Christen. Today at Café Goldegg, the focus is on Alma Mahler-Werfel and on Rosa Mayreder, pioneer of the women’s movement.

It’s important that our intestinal flora is well. After all, digestion impacts our well-being, our mood, our immune & nervous system and even our decisions. In her talk today, herbal expert Anda Dinhopl describes how stomach, bowels, liver & co work and how you can best support your digestive organs with attentive behaviour and gentle, natural means like herbs, nutrition and microorganisms. She also talks about how “detoxing” works in your daily life – and how simple rituals like breathing or stomach massages can help improve your digestive system.

Alimentari
The grappa selection alone is worth seeing here! Not only because they have more than 100 types of the grape marc spirit but because the bottles simply look fancy in the dignified wooden shelves of the turn of the century-pharmacy that used to be there. The newly opened and very elegant “Alimentari” belongs to the hotel “Das Triest”, which is why they sell mostly Italian & hotel guest-friendly packaged things. That’s why the beautifully designed wrappings and bottles of the groceries are an optical delight – ranging from olives and amaretti to pasta and wine, gin & limoncello. A tip for purchasing small presents and souvenirs!

Cafe Hildebrandt
This has the potential to become one of my favourite spots! Café Hildebrand has moved into a picturesque garden salon of Volkskundemuseum. Named after the architect of the palais, Lucas von Hildebrandt, looking down from his portrait with dignity to lunch eaters and coffee sippers. Elegant chandeliers, old carpets, raw colour-washed walls and wooden school desks make the room cosy – that’s how you do vintage with style. The huge glass doors offer a view into the yard, which turns into a wonderfully snug place in summer. And the food: clever and real tasty! Even pasta with kohlrabi tastes interesting here ;-) Great!
