Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Cats, moths, coat hangers and sharp edges – my sweaters magically attract holes. I even manage to get my sleeves caught in doorknobs. That makes for particularly picturesque tears. But now rescue is at hand! I discovered “visible mending” on Instagram (the trend!) – and lo and behold, there are also workshops in Vienna. "Visible Mending" involves repairing holes, tears or stains in clothing by deliberately making them visible. With the help of colourful yarn, embroidery, weaving and darning are done until the hole becomes a small work of art. This is actually not particularly difficult and often ends up looking better than before. And when you consider that an average of 2,500 litres of water are used in the production of a simple t-shirt alone, we should never throw away another piece of clothing anyway. On Friday, you can learn how to mend at RESI slowfashion. The workshop will teach the basic techniques and you can bring your own piece of garment to work on.

Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Susa Kreuzberger
Susa Kreuzberger Sale
Sale at Susa Kreuzberger! The Austrian designer makes sophisticated clothes that are nevertheless suitable for everyday wear. They are great to look at, but unfortunately often not exactly cheap. Of course: Kreuzberger makes all the dresses, tops, skirts, trousers and outerwear herself in her Vienna studio. She works with materials like cashmere and silk, sometimes even hand-painted! But as of today, everything is on sale: minus 10 to minus 50 percent on the current collection, samples are 70 percent off. Even the woolly alpaca coats from the winter collection are cheaper!

Familie Lässig
The Familie Lässig is the Austrian version of a supergroup. Where else do so many stars gather in a bunch to make music just for the fun of it! Manuel Rubey, Clara Luzia, Gunkl, Cathi Priemer as well as Gerald Votava and Boris Fiala play their originally interpreted and wittily moderated songs from hit songs to pop with a lot of charm and humour. The only drawback: because they are all busy all the time, there are rarely any live concerts. So if you want to see the spectacle in action for once, you're in luck: this week Familie Lässig is playing two evenings in a row. Cool!

International Holocaust Remembrance Day
77 years ago today, the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by the Red Army. Therefore, 27 January is the international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. To celebrate this historic day, admission to the House of Austrian History is free today! One of the current exhibitions is about what to do with leftovers from the Nazi era: Dispose of them? Sell them? Or even exhibit them in the museum? Tip: The free lecture on relations between Jews and Roma from the Nazi era to today will also be broadcast live on the HdG website!

Dali – Freud. An Obsession
Salvador Dali, the most dazzling figure of Surrealism – Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, ardent critic of culture and religion. Dali was evidently almost obsessed with Freud. From today, a comprehensive exhibition at the Lower Belvedere will demonstrate how his work was influenced by the psychoanalyst. Through 150 paintings, photographs, sculptures, journals, letters and documents, you can follow the artist from his first encounter with Freud's writings to his only meeting in exile in London in 1938. Surrealism meets psychoanalysis!

Guided Tour at Viennese Witching Hour
Walking through the dark alleys of the city at night is not for the faint-hearted. And then there will be stories told about historical criminal cases, witches and the undead in top of that during this tour! If you like spooky things, you'll love this nocturnal walk through the inner city. Vienna is full of mysterious stories and horrific legends – you just have to know where to find them. That’s why the tour is led by tour guide Astrid Stangl, who is already known for her ghost tours “Between Death and the Witching Hour”. The creepy walk ends at midnight at Stephansplatz.

 Fesch in Second Hand
Pretty in second-hand
Dancing through the pandemic smartly dressed – that would be the goal. We will be one step closer this afternoon, because there’s a second-hand flea market at LadenKonzept! Selected vintage clothes and lots of second-hand favourites will be in abundance in the small shop near the Schottentor, with no rummage-table atmosphere at all. If you buy second-hand, you win twice: One less item of clothing is produced anew, while another won’t end up in the rubbish. And already pre-loved items are also much cheaper than new ones!

Peter Cornelius: Solo
One of the most successful Austrian pop stars of the 1980s is playing at Konzerthaus today. It was his song “Reif für die Insel” (ready for the island) that made the phrase a catchphrase! Peter Cornelius is not only a bright star in the Austropop sky, but also a great guitarist. In the meantime, the Viennese singer-songwriter is already over 70 and has scaled back his former swaying factor a little. Today he performs solo and very reduced, armed only with an acoustic guitar. Classy 1980s pop, that is. Because Peter Cornelius is not yet ready for the island ;-)

 Kosmetikmacherei
Skin & Hair
Making your own cosmetic products sounds a bit like yoghurt masks and coffee grounds peeling. But at the Kosmetikmacherei, you learn how to make your own high-quality skincare range! In today's course, the most important plant oils and waters and their effects are explained, then it's time to start mixing: cleansing milk, toner, shampoo, bath oil, day cream, body lotion and lip care are made together in just one morning. That way, you determine the consistency, fragrance and, of course, the effect yourself. And you know exactly what's in it – after all, you mixed it yourself ;-)

Titian – Grande Finale Veneziano
Titian's paintings are poetry made image. The Renaissance painter is known for his opulent paintings of Venetian women – the Kunsthistorisches Museum's large autumn exhibition was dedicated to him and his contemporaries, but is now drawing to a close! So if you haven't been there yet, you can end your Sunday on a poetic note: The KHM will open its doors in the evening as an exception to allow an intimate tour of the exhibition at the end. The ticket price includes an audio guide, and the café in the museum will stay open longer to get some drinks afterwards.

Twitter Theatre – Burgtheater
Twitter is somehow always a theatre spectacle ;-) But today the Burgtheater is using the social media platform to make “real” theatre! Burg actors and Twitter users are creating a fictional play together. And everyone can take part – simply live via Twitter! At the same time, actors will record the play at the Funkhaus and it will be broadcast live on Ö1. This time it's science fiction: Commander (Caroline) Peters, First Officer (Gunther) Eckes & co play Star Wars with 280 characters. Plot impulses come from the official Burgtheater Twitter. Cool!

Amatsu: Healing Art from Japan
You never stop learning! So: Amatsu is the traditional healing art of the Ninja and Samurai. And actually accompanies the Japanese martial art Ninjutsu. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? In today's course in the Auer-Welsbach-Park (attention: bundle up!), you learn with the help of gentle exercises and thought-provoking impulses to regain physical and mental balance – they work with the meridian systems from TCM, for example. The aim is to learn techniques for better self-understanding. The first lesson in today's group course is free, you are welcome to check it out!

 Payam Boromand
Workshop: Drawing cartoons
Anyone can draw? Payam Boromand is convinced of that. You often come across the witty cartoons of the Iranian illustrator, who has lived in Vienna for years, for example, on the corrugated iron window shades of Orient Occident at the Naschmarkt or in the Falter. Today, the cartoonist is giving a three-hour online course in which he teaches how to capture situations with an artistic eye – and how to get to the heart of the joke! You can try it out right away: With pencil, fineliner, brush or pen on paper. Ideal for beginners who'd like a humorous introduction to drawing.

Hate online
It can happen at any time. From hateful comments under Instagram posts to open threats via Facebook messenger – hate and psychological violence can be found on the internet far more often than we would like. What can I do legally if I am insulted or even attacked online? And how can I help other victims as a witness? Sophie Haidinger from the association ZARA (civil courage and anti-racism work) and Monika Ritter from the GAW (Equal Treatment Advocacy office) provide information.

Online full-body training
In January, the motivation to reach your fitness goals is traditionally at its highest, but a visit to the fitness studio is not really advisable at the moment. This group course takes place via Zoom, every Tuesday you train with just your own body weight. No equipment, special know-how or fitness level required! The one-hour course consists of a warm-up, classic exercises such as sit-ups & co for strength and endurance, and a final relaxation session. The best thing is that you still exercise together with others, so you’ll have some nice workout buddies.

Hot Questions - Cold Storage
The Architektur-Zentrum reinvents itself! The display collection of the country's only architecture museum has been reworked and supplemented with a few real eye-catchers: original furniture from past decades, detailed historical models from various estates and newly discovered film material revisit Austria's recent past on the basis of its building history. But the collection also poses some of the hottest questions of the present: How do we want to live in the future? How do we react to globalisation and the climate crisis? Admission to the vernissage today is free!

Viennese sausage stand
The “Veganuary” has arrived here, too. The movement, which originated in England, proclaims to try out a purely plant-based diet for a month in January. So it is convenient then that there is already a sausage stand in Vienna where you can eat vegan without any problems. The “Wiener Wü” specialises in bosna and vegan sausages, the latter from the Viennese mushroom farmers “Hut & Stiel”. Of course, classic Frankfurters & co. are also available in the golden-painted sausage stall – organic from hand-picked butchers.
