"Heya Girls!"
“The real adventures are in the mind”, sang Andre Heller in the previous millennium – and the journeys of the year 2020 are in virtual space. It’s kind of the same. And so we’ll jet around the whole world this weekend. Technically, the Open House in Vienna should have taken place these days, where – also privately – doors open to offer a look behind the scenes of architectural jewels. Obviously, that's not possible. But instead of whining about it, all participating countries of the Open House changed their program in no time and published it on the web. In a 48-hour marathon on Saturday and Sunday you can now take a digital look behind the scenes of famous buildings – from New York to Lagos, Athens and Buenos Aires to Taipei. In London, for example, you can visit Dalston Curve Garden, a fantastic community garden on a disused railroad line. Over 40 cities on 5 continents are looking forward to a virtual visit! And all this without the need for the annoying packing of a suitcase and climate-gruesome aviation fuel.
Wishing you a world-wide week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Hilger Next: Exhibition
In a world full of manipulation, art makes the truth visible – with lithography, wood printing, linocut, woven and even iron. 15 students from the class of Jan Svenungsson at the Uni of Applied Arts present various approaches to graphics and printing. For the techniques used by an artist are as personal as the work of art itself. On display are eccentric daydreams by Camilla Schön, Zultsetseg Narantsogt's placenta series and powdered iron on canvas by Max Brenner. Tip: Since the artists are still at university, the truth is available from just 400 €.

Rami Lockdown Pop-up
Vienna's ceramic artists are standing in front of a colourful shimmering pile of shards. What to do with the pottery pieces when Christmas markets stay closed? Just help yourselves, the creative minds behind Rami thought, and without further ado turned their co-working studio into a pop-up store. Where people are usually busy pottering, firing and conveying the secret of the art of pottery, you can currently purchase exclusively handmade individual pieces by Viennese ceramists. It doesn’t only help the art sector, but also makes for a perfect Christmas present!

 La Maison d'Elisa
Sale at La Maison d´Elisa
Wax residues, roast stains, red wine...and is that a burn hole? No matter how you look at it, the table runner has unfortunately not survived the last holidays. Don't worry, there is still a little time left to stock up for setting the table ;-) How about some fine table linen from Le Jacquard Francais, for example? La Maison d'Elisa now offers a 20% discount on all tablecloths, runners, placemats and dish towels of the French premium brand. Enchant the table with a piece of woven art from France – and then keep an eye on that red wine glass!

Stream: Der Nino aus Wien
A consolation for the unfortunate ones who could not get tickets for the completely sold out concert in July: The Radiokulturhaus brings the “Bob Dylan from Praterstern” directly into your living room today. For over a decade now, Nino aus Wien has been painting the Austrian music scene red and singing his way into the hearts of the world’s most notoriously grumpy people with his special form of the Wienerlied. Lyrical Austro-pop with Viennese charm from a time when concerts still took place with an audience. That was only three months ago? Crazy.

Vienna Art Week starts digitally
The doors of the museums are firmly closed, the audience sits at home. No obstacle for the Vienna Art Week, though, which simply starts digitally today: via livestream into the exhibition and with Zoom to artist talks. Today, the digital passage through the exhibition “Shadow Citizens” is the first step. This weekend, the Open Studio Days marathon continues via Zoom: in talk show format, the presenter scurries from studio to studio to give viewers virtual insights into the workshops of various artists. This is how you do culture autumn from the couch!

Live-Cooking: Chinese Power Soups
A strengthened immune system for all soup fans – the traditional power soup makes it possible. But beware: the taste buds get fired up quite a bit. In the 5-element theory, the element metal represents spicy foods. Claudia Radbauer and Veronika Ottenschläger mix traditional Chinese medicine with modern nutritional science and cook up an instructive morning. Those who do not want to join the cooking live can also put their feet up and watch the professionals. But do not become envious if the soup does not magically appear at your table then!

Autumn Sale at FreyWille
Expressionist colourfulness inspired by Van Gogh, a tribute to Friedensreich Hundertwasser or Egyptian patterns from the time of the pharaohs – the colourful enamelled jewellery by FreyWille always catches the eye. So it's a good thing that a lot of pieces are currently reduced by 30% at the autumn sale: bracelets and pendants, rings, or small and large creoles. If you don't want to put up with the autumn weather for the autumn sale and go to the elegant boutique on Stephansplatz (or if the shops have to close down after all), you can conveniently shop online.
Frey Wille, Stephansplatz 5, 1010 Vienna. Mon-Thu 12:00 to 17:00, Fri until 18:00, Sat 11:00 to 18:00 + at the online shop. Web

Draw Together Workshop at MoMA
No, don't throw away the aluminium foil! Nor the old newspaper! Both are needed today at a drawing workshop in New York. The Museum of Modern Art wants to bring art to people even in lockdown, and that is – duh – via Zoom. You don't have to be a professional, it’s about exploring the process of drawing and putting your stamp on everyday materials. Today, MoMA has also thought of the art-starved European ladies and scheduled the workshop at a reasonable hour. In short exercises, you will get to play with lines, incisions and outlines.

Live-Stream: Hilary Hahn Returns
If the name Hilary Hahn does not put a sparkle in your eyes, you clearly have some catching up to do. The virtuoso and highly likeable perfectionist among the professional violinists will celebrate her return to the stage with the Houston Symphony and a street hit: Mozart's 5th Violin Concerto. In another time zone, though. But hey, when one of the most gifted violinists of our time is back on stage for the first time in a year, it's certainly worth setting the alarm clock to 3:00 o’clock at night. For sleepyheads, the stream will still be available for 24 hours after the concert.

Zoom-Call with penguins
Something different – switch on the Zoom conference and look a penguin in the eye instead of your boss. The ice birds of the National Aquarium of New Zealand are already famous on the internet: the aquarium regularly chooses the naughtiest and best-behaved penguin of the month. Now you can meet the social media stars “in person” – for example Mo, the notorious fish thief. Via Zoom conference, they connect you live to their habitat and you can talk to the keepers. With a bit of luck, you might even meet Captain, the penguin of the year. He’s said to be a real gentleman ;-)

Roast turkey with glazed chestnuts, sweet potato puree, cabbage sprouts and cranberry-pomegranate chutney from the gourmet kitchen of the Marriott Hotel is brought to your table (until 31 December). Stream Tiger Lillies
Brechtian punk cabaret is now exclusively available in the stream at Porgy & Bess: Tiger Lillies present their new album “Covid-19 II”. One of three new albums since April, by the way – yes, vaudeville punk never sleeps! With clown painting, falsetto singing and songs like “Lockdown Blues”, “Flatten the Curve” and “Just a Flu” the trio is taking the zeitgeist of the crisis to the task. A musical reappraisal of the pandemic in Tiger Lillie's style: dark, bizarre and theatrical. Listen in here – black humour is not only beneficial for coping with the social crisis ;-)

Talk: Women in Leadership Roles
Enough with symbolic politics. Instead of constantly preaching with great pathos about boss ladies and girl power, Austria needs real women in leadership positions. At the moment, female bosses are an endangered species in the domestic entrepreneurial landscape – and that despite the women's quota. So how do women approach the issue cleverly? It's best to ask the women who are already sitting in the boss's chair: CFO Sibylle Nowak, 4Gamechangers founder Nina Kaiser, IKEA manager Tanja Burrati and Öhlmühle boss Julia Fandler answer questions in the webinar.

Webinar: Comeback from the crisis
Pointless! An exclamation that you sometimes can't help but utter in times like these. But this apocalyptic mood really doesn't help anyone in the long run – after all, Viennese women are known for their defiance, which is also appropriate in the face of pandemics and attacks. If you still need help in finding meaning and crisis management, the webinar “Gestärkt aus der Krise gehen” is just the right thing for you. In the free seminar Irene Fellner will explain how you can draw opportunities and potential from crises and arrive at the end of the tunnel stronger after difficult times.

MAK Thinking
“If Shakespeare had been a woman, we could never have read Hamlet”, Virginia Woolf writes in “A Room of One's Own”. Because women have long been denied the space to create – both in society and in everyday life. Architect Margarte Schütte-Lihotzky designed such a room for Karoline Neubacher – which is normally on display at the MAK. Unfortunately, that's not possible due to Corona, but you can hear the museum: special objects and their history(s) are presented in detail in a MAK audio series – and are read by actors from the Burgtheater.

Milk has been milked, cheese produced and the cellars are full: time did not stand still in Vorarlberg dairies during Corona, but now their special alpine cheese wants to be eaten, too. To ensure that the capital gets its share of the action, the Käsliebe pop-up store brings the speciality to Vienna, and Alma takes care of distribution. An important difference to mountain cheese: Alpine dairies produce Alpine cheese only from hay milk and still traditionally by hand on the alpine pastures. The three cheese vintages in the shop: a mild young cheese (2020), a mild and spicy variety (2019) and a strong and ripe variety (2018).

Tudo Bem
Saudade is Portuguese and means something like longing or wanderlust. Viktor and Manuela Riemer have now expressed this sense of longing they have for Portugal. Tudo Bem – or “alles leiwand”, as the Viennese would say – brings a bit of the cuisine from the Iberian Peninsula directly to the 5th district. Literally everything here is from Portugal, even the old wooden furniture. The assortment is of the finest variety and hand-picked: port wines from the Douro Valley, olive oil from the Algarve and exclusive coffee specialities and premium chocolate from Porto. Has just opened – and is allowed to remain open.
