"Heya Girls!"
If you walk past Kubus Export these days, you might be a little surprised. The glass cube is full of lamps (photo). Johannes Rass has created an installation consisting of many, many floor lamps – one for every femicide in Austria in the last five years! In 2023 alone, another 25 women were murdered in Austria, 41 women were critically injured or only just survived attempted murders. In Austria, every fifth woman is affected by physical, psychological and/or sexual violence, that is 20 per cent of all Austrian women. The figures leave you stunned. On 25 November, the “Orange the World” campaign will once again be launched worldwide on this topic. Countless events are also being organised in Vienna on the 16 Days for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The Volkshochschulen offer courses on self-assertion and self-defence, the main library is hosting lectures and the exhibition “#TogetherAgainstViolence”, and the women's shelters have compiled lists of all the events. It is important to look instead of looking away!

Wishing you a safe week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Palais Freiluft
Palais “Freiluft” Winter Edition
What is much sought-after in summer is just as much fun in winter! That's what the operators of Palais “Freiluft” thought, which is why they are transforming the baroque garden of Palais Auersperg into a Christmas market. From Wednesday to Sunday, you can hear hot cocktails such as a “Fireball Apple Strudel Shot” or “Monte Makava” chink in an urban winter wonderland atmosphere. Winter delicacies will be served in an imperial ambience, and the winter party will be rounded off by changing pop-up markets, a Christmas tree sale, DJ line-ups and an ice-stock rink!

No Black Friday at Freitag
Today, shoppers around the world are once again flocking to discount battles. While many retailers fear the collapse of their online shops on Black Friday, the naysayers at Zurich bag manufacturer Freitag are rebelling and close theirs. This year, the checkouts in the physical stores will also be out of order, as all F-Shops will become temporary lending stations from 13:00 to 18:00. For a fortnight, you can pick a bag of your choice and carry it around for free. The only condition: You have to be a so called F-ederation member, but it's easy to register online!

Annett Louisan
Yay, Annett is in town! The German vocal wonder has written new heart-warming chansons and is delighting our ears with a concert in Vienna. “Baby Blue” is the name of the album on which, for a change, she hasn't composed any feel-good songs but – as the name suggests – sings about the midlife blues and getting older. Full of dedication and humour, tongue-in-cheek and sincere at the same time, Annett Louisan talks about fear, but also about accepting this stage of life. If you can't wait, click here. The others will meet in the Stadthalle.

Krav Maga: Self-Defence for women
One thing is clear: a weekend course won’t turn you into an ace in self-defence. Unless you have the ninja gene ;-) But six hours of focused training can dramatically improve your chances of being able to defend yourself in an emergency. To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Irene Zavarsky's course not only shows exercises for defence in a standing position (hit it hard) and clinch on the ground (come up safe), but also how to work on your voice and body language in order to appear stronger. Also for daughters from the age of 15!

 Wiener Philharmoniker
The Philharmonic Orchestra and Women
Hard to imagine: it was only 26 years ago – and only because they were more or less forced to – that the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra welcomed the first woman into its then 150-year history. Until 2006, however, harpist Anna Lelkes remained the only female member of the orchestra. Even today, just 23 of the orchestra's 147 positions are held by women. Today, board member Daniel Froschauer talks to two female members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra about this long-outdated situation and the female future of the orchestra. Exciting!

Exercise for health
“I like to move it, move it” – even though this song makes you circle your hips 99% of the time, we generally don't really like to move very much. However, Dr Richard Crevenna from MedUni Vienna shows just how beneficial the “medicine” exercise is. In his lecture, the expert explains how important an active lifestyle is, both in terms of preventing common illnesses such as chronic joint pain, muscle weakness or cardiovascular disease, as well as existing illnesses. Tips and tricks to get yourself going quickly are available this evening!

4 grumpy women about Christmas
Advent, Advent, we’re running on fumes: one woman has overlooked the fact that her son has Corona. The other has a white Christmas because the hairdresser was out of appointments. The third one has already eaten these crappy cookies and could puke, and out of annoyance, she has already given her son his Christmas present and now has none left. The fourth embroiders a willyon her hat and hopes that her daughter won’t notice. Miriam Hie, Gini Brenner, Heidi List and Julia Pühringer talk about Christmas problems tonight – with wonderfully dry humour!

Small, cosy, homely – the name fits perfectly, as “Pa-To” is Japanese and means “apartment”. And you do immediately feel at home in Nedra Chachoua and Jennifer Mory's concept store. Aufzug Cafe
This is clearly the most unusual coffee house in Vienna. And it's a particularly nice one at that. Christian Tauss has been collecting art nouveau lifts from old Viennese houses and renovating them for 15 years – and he has now set up a coffee house with his favourite pieces. You can either sit in one of the smart historic lift cabins and drink coffee from a Viennese organic roastery or savour croissants, vegan brownies and pain au chocolat on the industrial-style tables next to it. Particularly original: the paternoster built in 1911 from a former bank at Schottentor. Fittingly, the boss wears a liftboy uniform :-)
