editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I’m pretty good at repressing things. I guess you have to be when you’ve led such a turbulent chick-life as I have while still stubbornly remaining an optimist. But this year has wrecked me. Or rather, the racing time has. I inwardly still feel like it’s March, though in reality, next week the days will already start getting shorter! Thiscannotbeiamgoingtocry! The only nice thing about this catastrophe: on the longest day of the year, there will be a “Silent boat concert” on the Old Danube – with Nino aus Wien (Nino from Vienna). The idea comes from media-artist Oliver Hangl who sends musicians onto the water together with the audience. So next Wednesday, 20 electric pedal-boats will swarm out onto the Old Danube to soundlessly row their way through the gentle waves with Nino aus Wien. All come with headphones, so that everyone can relax and listen to the melancholic songs. Maybe Nino will sing my favourite song “Winter in April”. And by the way, does anybody know a clockmaker for biological clocks?

Wishing you a summer-sunny week

 Bruce Davidson
Bruce Davidson
The photographer born 1933 in Chicago has been snapping pictures since he was ten years old. His work is not really marked by a particular style, but by a very personal perspective of reality. His often very intimate portraits show people of marginalised environments or subcultures, like the “Brooklyn Gang”. For the first time, an extensive retrospective exhibition presents his humanist photography in Austria, with a survey of his creative activity which spans more than five decades, including some works of his youngest project, Nature of Los Angeles.

Traiskirchen. The Musical
During the summer of 2015, the ones fleeing war and the ones spoiled by peace, seers and the politically short-sighted, agitators and the harassed meet at the completely overcrowded Traiskirchen refugee camp. Unfortunately, that’s not fiction but that’s exactly what happened, and it’s now the subject of an unusual musical being shown in the course of the Festwochen. Global love stories, grotesque misunderstandings and political intrigues are interwoven into a comic spectacle asking some of the urgent questions that we will face during the coming years. Brilliant entertainment beyond any upper limits!

Summer Party at lower Neubaugasse
Shopping pros know of course that it pays off to go very far down Neubaugasse because a lot of really great shops with different lines of business have taken up residence on its lower third towards Neustiftgasse. Today, they host a street summer party together, joining in are for instance “Die Piratin hat den besten Stoff ”, Purple Cave-Vintage, the Silverfineart gallery or the sweet NOBNOB bonbon manufactory – by the way, with a candy sale! Feelings of summer happiness will not only be evoked by sales, but also by drinks, Chinese lanterns, and live-acts. Awesome!

Trickster –Catch me if you can
Sometimes, the entire CitySpotterGirl editorial staff sneaks into Lilarum Kindertheater (children’s theatre) because we’re enthusiastic fans of the puppet shows shown there. Today, we finally don’t have to hide behind the little ones – because today they play for grown-ups. Jan Jedenak, former ensemble member of Lilarum, has finished his puppet theatre studies in Stuttgart and now presents his first all-night solo as Austrian premiere. He slips into multiple roles, plays with masks and engages the audience in a subtle throw-and-catch-game. Exciting!

Beethoven on Tour
Ludwig van Beethoven lived in Vienna for so many years that he’s almost considered Austrian. And he moved a lot, which explains the many Beethoven-houses in Vienna. His apartment in Heiligenstadt will be expanded into a Beethoven museum and will therefore be closed from July 3rd. But before that, there’s an open day! You can visit the house in which he wrote the desperate letter to his brother about his progressive deafness (the “Heiligenstadt Testament”), experience a lecture and guided tours as well as enjoy wonderful concerts. Free entry!

A real Tibetan nomadic tent from eastern Tibet will be set up in the garden and the refreshments will include fresh Tibetan Momos and delicacies from the grill. If you want, you can try the traditional butter tea (careful: quite the tasting adventure!), learn how to play the popular game of dice “Sho”, buy some reading material at the book sale or acquire some Tibetan arts and crafts. Food Festival Vienna x Urban in Vienna
Where exactly have we been eating before all the food festivals with their food trucks existed ;-) In any case, eating in company outside in the fresh air is great, and we’re always ready to let our senses be invigorated by new food trends. This weekend, you can eat your culinary way through 20 food stalls in the front yard of MuseumsQuartier. Cooked, sputtered and fried will be: burgers, tortillas, waffles and other treats, with cooling smoothies and salads. Additionally: swap meet for recipe-books and cookbooks, art and design shopping.

Madame Baheux & Die Furchtlosen
Funny and wonderfully groovy: the all-female quintet Madame Baheux is taking common Balkan clichés for a ride in funky fictional Viennese dialect. The charming star-musicians with roots from Serbia to Bulgaria will play sophisticated and infectious world music with south-eastern European sound roots. The aptly named band “Die Furchtlosen” (The Fearless) are also an all-female band that will make their debut at today’s double concert, devoting themselves in a very spirited way to native folk music in all its glory. Exciting female vibes between tradition and modernisation!

Live-Dating at the cinema
Watching a film and going home in love – that’s the (ambitious) plan for the live-dating events at Votivkino. The documentary film #Single will be shown and afterwards, you can start flirting away at the cinema bar. The film about human mating behavior in the 21st century will surely be a good conversational icebreaker ;-) It shows five Viennese singles that have been filmed throughout the ups and downs of trying to find a partner online. Single coach Eva Fischer will be at the dating event after the screening, helping people connect and offering advice on finding happiness.

But it’s not just for feasting, chilling and grilling in the sun, you can also push balls over the net! Two beach volleyball courts with steplessly adjustable nets invite you to set and dig athletically – and also after sunset! Thanks to the floodlight, the courts are fit to be used until 23:00. Exciting start with an explosive topic: the socially engaged short-film festival zeitimpuls is dealing with “The Power of Fear” in tonight’s opening. At the Klimt Villa, the highly topical question to what degree terror-news coverage is influenced by emotions, politics and media logic will be discussed by means of demo videos and a workshop discussion. Film-clips by creative thinkers will be shown on Thursday in the Metro Kinokulturhaus at the zeitimpuls shortfilm awards-show; on Friday, the Long Night of Human Right’s Film will bring the Festival to an end.

Elvis sing-along with Ron Glaser
It’s now or never! Today at the Jewish Museum, Elvis-devotees can do the whole Rock’n Roll thing and tearjerker-high and honour their King at a sing-along. The great (and pretty handsome) Viennese singer and guitarist Ron Glaser will bring the best of, from rocking to schmaltzy, and under the expert guidance of the award-winning imitator and thanks to the provided texts, all the ladies can just sing along. By the way, all the rocking and rolling in the Jewish Museum has to do with the current exhibit “Trude & Elvis”. Which is really worth seeing too!

A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea
In Syria, Doaa al Zamel was dreaming of studying law but the war destroyed all her plans. In 2014, she dared risk crossing the sea to reach Europe together with her finance, a journey that ended in a tragedy with 500 casualties. The young woman became a life-saver, barely surviving herself. Her dramatic and touching story is now being told by UNHCR-spokesperson Melissa Fleming in her book, as a symbol for all the people behind the abstract facts and figures. Today, Melissa Fleming is reading from her book in the presence of her protagonist Doaa al Zamel.

Care + Repair
The grounds at the former Nordbahnhof (northern train station) are still quite the wasteland, but a new and hip part of town is being planned there! This is happening right now and what’s awesome about it is: you can join in and watch live! Six international teams of architects from Norway to Greece have been invited to Vienna to discuss possible solutions for repairing the future together with local experts and us. There will be brainstorming, discussions, and networking in a public workspace at the water tower. Because what really matters here is working together. Exciting!

Women’s Walk in the 15th district
Interesting tour of discovery through the feminine side of Fünfhaus! For today’s neighbourhood walk (for women and about women!), art historian Katrin Rummel has done some intense research on women who lived in the 15th district but have remained unknown despite all their deeds and influence. The tour is organised by the organisation Login which supports people affected by poverty, isolation or marginalisation with various activities. The tour starts at the clubhouse in Weiglgasse, then proceeds via Sechshauser Straße to Fünfhausgasse and back again.

325 years Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
Creative party at Schillerplatz: the Academy is being renovated and will thus move its quarters to various other locations for three years at the end of the summer semester. It’s also her 325 anniversary – more than enough reason for an extensive celebration. Having started with a lecture on “Feminist Idols” yesterday, today is the big “celebration day”: the final projects are exhibited, there are parties in the courtyards, animated films are shown and you can also participate at a “Grand Tourtours”: a bus ride organized by Performative Art students. Happy Birthday!

Volta
Eye candy for you and for your home: concept store Volta, which used to be in Servitenviertel, has now moved to Siebensterngasse. The owner, Cornelia Wedam-Lieger is a graphic designer – obviously with a great eye for special and fine things. At first glance, all their cool (home) design things and gifts seem pretty “Scandinavianly plain” in their style but among them, you will also find fluffy Moroccan carpets and hand-woven Iringa-baskets from Tanzania. What else: the finest china by Danish label studio Arhoj or bright plaids and cushions made from recycle denim “by mölle”, very pretty!

home café
We do know that Icelanders are an original people. So the fact that an Icelandic restaurant attracts a colourful-original audience should not come as a surprise. The home café is, as an Iceland-expert friend of the CitySpotterGirl puts it, “just like the island in the far north”.  Very sympathetic, witty and always somewhat improvised. In the wild mess of vintage couches, Resopal-tables and corny embroidery, there’s chatter in all kinds of languages and then, of course, there’s the food: lots of fish (naturally) and delicious bread (baked by a bear with tattoos). And at the neighbouring table was the next young Björk, I swear!
