"Heya Girls!"
What's going on when body parts dance to the music of J.S. Bach, tampons bloom and the “citizen Stork” smoking on the balcony suddenly realises that he is a bird? That’s right! The Tricky Women are back in town. Europe's only film festival dedicated exclusively to the animated work of women is showing its 160 films again this year in the Metro cinema and online – and lets pixels, puppets and plasticine figures dance across the screen. The clear highlight is the feature-length film “La Traversée/ The Crossing”. In it, Florence Miailhe, the grande dame of French animated film, tells the story of an escape. She dedicated the multi-award-winning film, which is partly based on her family's biography, to her grandmother, who had to flee the pogroms in Odessa. As brutal as the topics dealt with in the film are, Miailhe tells of the journey to freedom, of courage and hope in a poetic and almost tender way. Colourful noise on the screen!

This Side of Paradise
Reiner Riedler is one of Austria's most successful contemporary photographers. The “chronicler of desires” is known for his sharp but affectionate look at human oddities: Bathers playing holiday in the tropics in a Berlin indoor world, an entertainer in a battered Superman costume, a fake firing squad entertaining paying tourists. The gallery WestLicht is dedicating a show of work full of absurd and thought-provoking photographs to Riedler. The photographer will be there in person, and David Schalko will speak!

Fresh Fish
Big fish in town! The slippery water-dwellers have a special meaning in some parts of the world. The Bozo, for example, a West African ethnic group, traditionally live from fishing. They live along the Niger river in Mali and see themselves as the children of Faaro, the spirit of water and creator of the world. To honour him, they wear colourful wooden masks in the shape of a fish during ritual festivities! The Fortuna Gallerie is dedicated to art from countries far from material wealth. Until the end of March, it will show unusual fish art from Africa and Asia!

Making glass beads
Glass creations can be true works of art. In the LadenKonzept today, beginners and slightly advanced students are shown how to make glass beads, brooches, pendants and other implosions out of glass. Liquid glass is a fascinating raw material with only the laws of physics as its limits. In a short theoretical introduction, the safe handling of gas, burner, tools and material is first explained. And then off we go making the first beads. The work is done on dual gas burners and soft glass from Glashütte Murano-Effetre is used.

“There's more to dance than red shoes”, goes the saying. At the brut dance festival there is ample proof of how true this is! For three weeks, creative choreographies and exciting performances by Austrian and international artists are once again on show. For the opening, the choreographer duo Rykena/Jüngst will transform themselves into futuristic, cyborg-like shape-shifters. In the performance Deep Dancing, dancing becomes trauma therapy, and Mzamo Nondlwana dances for a better future beyond the white, binary majority society.

Marlene Dietrich, Zarah Leander, Hildegard Knef – they are Germany's most famous chanteuses of the 1930s and 40s. The artist Anita Eberwein has interwoven the stories of the 3 stars. In her solo programme, the mezzo-soprano sings her way through red roses raining down from above, is set on love from head to toe and asks herself: Why shouldn't a woman have an affair? Between the iconic songs of the 3 astounding women, Eberwein shares stories about their turbulent history – mixed with original quotes from the divas. Very nice!

The American-Austrian singer-songwriter Maria Thornton produces relaxed sounds somewhere between soul, indie folk and psychedelia. As Liz Metta, she has been around quite a bit in Vienna's small concert venues. The musician is currently working on her first album! Today she will be performing solo, accompanied only by her acoustic guitar, at the Bezirksmuseum Leopoldstadt. An exhibition on music by women by the MusicaFemina project is just ending there. Not only do women still get paid less than their male colleagues, but female art is still often simply overlooked!

Among other things, you can buy the funny merch by Stefanie Sargnagel, the casual streetwear with feminist slogans by Samtpflaume or the beer by Muschikraft, the purchase of which supports women's shelters. And lots of art, of course! Whether photo-realistic portraits by Kunst_Banausin or the cool illustrations by drag queen Susie Flowers – surely no wall will remain empty. From now on, a pop-up like this will take place once a month. Very nice!

In the middle of the 19th century, the Hungarian doctor Ignaz Semmelweis found out that hygiene and regular disinfection in hospitals lead to fewer deaths. Throughout his life, Semmelweis was frowned upon for this finding – especially by other doctors! Since then, it’s called Semmelweis reflex when you reject new scientific findings without checking them yourself. In the new off-theatre play, people dance, shout and die to this. And we find out why Semmelweis is also called the “saviour of mothers”. Cool: Indietronic musician b.fleischmann provides the live soundtrack.

Sisterhood in the 19th century
When the spotlight falls on Franz Grillparzer, the rest of the stage – as with many other supposedly “great” men – sinks into darkness. Until now, the four Fröhlich sisters, who may have played a central role in the playwright's life but whose significance and own lives have never been examined more closely, have disappeared into this darkness. Today, researchers at the Wienbibliothek are streaming how the Fröhlich sisters were able to realise themselves professionally and privately as women of the Biedermeier era, what sisterhood, marriage, living together and the household meant to them.

Friedl Bison wants to distribute his inheritance among his children. To do so, he gathers them in the lobby of the Hotel Kaiserblick. He himself stays in the emperor's suite and communicates various peculiarities only via butler. A hedonistic psychiatrist, a corrupt politician and the manager of the family empire interfere, and a competition for the biggest piece of the cake ensues. Director Hakon Hirzenberger creates a hilarious inheritance story out of completely absurd events and wild speculations – only the pizza delivery lady knows the way out. Today is the Vienna premiere!

Female Landscapes
In the past, women were mainly treated like objects in art: beautiful portrait models, inspiring muses, sexy nude models. In this exhibition, six artists dedicate themselves to the depiction of the female body with photos and installations – without the usual male-dominated connotations. The feminist view of femininity is as multifaceted as the body itself: In Stephanie Misa's work, a papaya becomes a symbol for the practice of bleaching female bodies, Claudia Larcher devotes herself to the topic of skin as a landscape image in which there are no distinct genders. Exciting!

We've never had kebab like this in Vienna! Firstly, at the newly opened John Döner you can pick up the filled bread as take away, but above all you can sit down all fancy in this nice restaurant. Secondly: Everything, truly everything, is organic here! And thirdly: John even serves kebabs with salmon trout. Or all veggie. And you can choose whether you want the whole thing as a kebab, a Dürüm, or a bowl. The delicious pita bread comes from Joseph, the chicken and fish taste excellent, and the toppings with raclette cheese or hemp seeds are also creative. Very likeable!
