editorial

"Heya Girls!"
It is the topic of the hour! Instead of consumerism with its nasty effects on the climate, the re:pair festival from Saturday onwards shows how we can act more sustainably. The aim of the festival is to revive the traditional culture of repair in over 100 events. And it's not just about darning socks, but about repairing in art, in building, in technology, even in nature. For three weeks, exhibitions, workshops and lectures (such as on “Kintsugi”, the traditional Japanese gold repairing) show the enormous range of the topic. In the Volkskundemuseum, a tiled stove is restored in front of the public. In the course of 17 guided Grätzl walks, you can discover workshops of the repair network all over Vienna – from guitar workshops to knife sharpeners. And at the festival headquarters in the Volkskundemuseum, you can mend pieces of clothing in a creative way under the guidance of experts with Visible Mending. Since I've had two new flatmates for a few days, who put every sweater through a thorough claw test, I'll probably be there quite often.

Wishing you a sustainable week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Watercoulor Lettering
Ever since postcards have become more popular than WhatsApp messages again, hand lettering is booming. However, the art of beautiful letters can also be expanded in its degree of creativity. For example, you can write with watercolours instead of a pen. Today, we love handmade Studio founders Anna and Petra show you how to create the most beautiful colour gradients and modern lettering styles such as script or serif. A craft kit with the most important materials is available on site, by the way, and those who want to continue practising at home can do so with the digital handout

 Brandstätter Verlag
Cafe Brandstätter at Landtmann
When Cafe Landtmann changes its name, Haya Molcho chats about her life and all the guests wear ties, then it's party time! And rightly so, because Brandstätter Verlag turns 40 and treats itself to its own festival. Three weeks of spectacle all about cooking, knowledge, culture and enjoyment: For this, the Landtmann Cafe becomes Cafe Brandstätter, the quick-witted tongues Florian Aigner and Martin Moder host a Science Night and there is also a pop-up with special books, stationery from Sous-Bois and plants from Blumen Doll's. It starts today with a Japanese sharing menu from Mochi!

 Schlumberger
Schlumberger Escape Room
This tingling experience definitely counteracts the autumn blues. Because in the Schlumberger winery you can now go on a puzzle hunt. Escape fans dive into the year 1880 – the bottle supply is running low, but the secret Schlumberger sparkling wine recipe has gone missing. What sounds fatal to champagne lovers makes riddle kings bubble over! Teams of 2-6 people have 60 minutes to find the recipe. In two rooms, you work your way through tricky tasks, there are also a few surprises – and then hopefully the corks will pop again at the end!

Living for Future: Wohnfilmtage
Future living can be really creative. Starting today, the Living for Future association will show just how much. For three days, documentary films will provide insights into forms of living around the globe and visionary ideas for the use of living space. Today, for example, we will first visit the Viennese housing project “Sargfabrik”, then travel to Japanese micro-houses and visit the largest cross-class housing complex in Mexico City. Along the way, humanist Yona Friedman reports on his award-winning migration architecture – and at the end you can discuss it with filmmaker Lotte Schreiber.

Ways of Freedom
After the Second World War, painting went completely new ways and abstraction became the world language. 1945 became a turning point in the development of modern painting. The European avant-garde artists in American exile made New York, along with Paris, a centre that set new standards. As of today, the Albertina modern is dedicating itself to Abstract Expressionism – with a focus on works by female abstract-expressive artists such as Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Maria Lassnig and Judit Reigl. Powerful!

Päm
Are you even allowed to say that? A question that Päm simply doesn't ask itself, because the band is Austrian female power that delivers what it promises – namely power on and off the stage! The strong-voiced front woman Pamela Pum embodies everything the four-member band stands for: emphatically expressing your own opinion, standing up for yourself and saying what others don't dare to say. Packed into rock-inspired numbers, catchy tunes and power ballads, the variety of topics is just as great as the load of joy of life. You can listen to them tonight at the Volkstheater!

VBW: Open Doors Days
Yes, you read that right. It's Open Doors Day (plural!) because the Theater an der Wien is moving temporarily to the MuseumsQuartier. While the core renovation at the Naschmarkt is in full swing, things will be happening here until autumn 2024. This is heralded by the fact that you can look in everywhere for a day. How is a stage set created? How do music and painting go together? Today, visitors can be prop workers in the Ovalhalle, soloists will perform arias from the current season in the Hofstallung, and in Hall E there will be speed dating with actors from the MusikTheater. Creative fun all day long!

Margarethe Ottillinger
Great women, voices far too quiet. Is unfortunately still a disgrace in 2022, especially in the professional world. That's why the Portraittheater has made it its mission to put outstanding historical women on the big stage through plays. This is also the case with today's premiere, which focuses on the exciting life of the economic expert Margarethe Ottillinger (played by Anita Zieher) – from her doctorate at the Hochschule für Welthandel, to her deportation to a Russian penal camp, to the top of OMV. Simply exemplary female!

Autogenic Training
It's only Tuesday, the week is still long and your stress barometer is already spiking. Chillaxing is the order of the day! CitySpotterGirl’s tip: doing autogenic training at WohlDenken. In this modified form of self-hypnosis, relaxation is induced by the intense imagination of calm. Repeatedly reciting thought formulas creates an effective and lasting state of relaxation, which can for instance improve problems falling asleep, reduce chronic tension and simply help you to slow down. The course (8 units of 90 minutes each) starts today!

Café Lerche
Hmm... isn’t this one just to our taste again! Because the moment Schelato takes its winter break with its icy delicacies, a smart pop-up café immediately takes over the role of pampering us. With fair-trade coffee from the Viennese roastery Prem Frischkaffee, homemade vegan cinnamon rolls and a cosy ambience, the cool owners Lion and Flo will sweeten the whole rest of October for us. And if you want to come here for after-work or at the weekend, they also have some tasty Spritzer and live DJ! Well, if this doesn’t have the potential to become our second living room...

Helmut Newton. Legacy
Shrill, theatrical, provocative, contrasted by luxury, peppered with eccentricity and always with strong women at the centre – Helmut Newton's pictures are as disconcerting as fascinating. The star photographer, who planned his settings so meticulously that retouching was superfluous, gets a retrospective deluxe on his 100th birthday. Over 300 works – like his renowned series “Big Nudes” (which would probably trigger a sexism debate today), portraits of David Bowie and Romy Schneider and, of course, the revolutionary fashion shoots for Courrèges and Thierry Mugler.

Tea(ch) me how to drink it – Teresa's, Anouk's and Kate's favourite pastime. In their brand-new mini-teahouse with a feminine Scandi look, the three sell everything from Japanese green teas to oolongs from Taiwan and fermented varieties from China that make the teapot cheer – including crockery and tea accessories from their own rami ceramic factory. From these, you can also sip your way through the fragrant tea selection on site, while the infusion divas serve up freshly brewed tea stories. Next time you visit, make sure to ask for the story of the “Bug bitten Teas”!

 Matcha Komatchi
Matcha Komachi
The triumph of the small Japanese gem Matcha Komachi began very close to our office, in Operngasse. In the meantime, they've already opened their third restaurant, this time a much larger one, at Hoher Markt. Japanese tapas, onigiri, udon soups, ramen and donburi curries taste a bit like in a decent tavern in Japan. Matcha tea (also available here as a smoothie and ice cream) and well-chilled Kirin beer go well with this. And it’s a really nice place to hang out, too: The large room is flooded with light and beautifully patterned Japanese fabrics hang like flags from the ceiling.
