"Heya Girls!"
Every year in July, opinions are divided in Vienna. Some love the hot pavement and the empty city, others flee on holidays direttamente. Here in the editorial office, too, heads have been buzzing, but only to spy out as many refreshing and breezy activities as possible ;-) This week, for example, we're going deep into the cool Viennese underground or into the cinematic sea of the Gartenbau cinema. There's also something particularly cool on offer for all those who stayed behind: Leica Camera Austria and Gasthaus Artner invite you to a photo competition! “The real Vienna” with all its rancid and lovable corners should be in front of the lens. A maximum of 15 snapshots per participant is allowed. And if you like, you can borrow a professional camera for 24 hours! The deadline is 15 August, the winning photos will be produced as exclusive editions and exhibited in autumn at the Gasthaus auf der Wieden. There’s certainly no shortage of motif inspiration in our favourite city ;-)

Attention bookworms! Today the popular literature festival O-Töne starts its 20th round! Popular above all because not only the usual suspects but also hot newcomers have their say! Reading at the start: Bachmann Prize winner Birgit Birnbacher from “Wovon wir leben” and debutant Cornelia Hülmbauer from her debut wonder “oft manchmal nie”. Vienna Underground Tour
As always, the name says it all for the makers of “Wien mal anders” (a different Vienna). Influencer Jerryously will take you down into the Viennese underground twice. The almost 1-hour creepy trip starts at 11:00 (English), the 2-hour one at 17:00 (German). A part of the former air-raid shelter network of the first district will be explored. And it's definitely not for the faint-hearted. Cool side effect: the mysterious cellar vaults, secret shafts, hidden medical and air-raid shelters from the Second World War have pleasantly cool temperatures. Only the uninformed sweat upstairs :-)

Film Festival frame[o]ut
When the courtyard of the MQ is not being filled with sound from the O-Töne, it simply transforms into a cool open-air cinema. On Fridays and Saturdays, the frame[o]ut festival presents films that are more out of the ordinary than just run-of-the-mill. Bravo also to the chosen festival motto: resilience aka adaptability! When, if not in times of multiple crises, is it important to remain optimistic and mobilise intelligent forces of resistance! The festival opens today with the French nanny homage “Ama Gloria”. In case of bad weather, the event moves to Arena 21.

As many as three times this summer, Portuguese super-fado- sounds resound from the Theater am Spittelberg. Today's opener of the concert series is none other than Helder Moutinho, who is considered one of the most charismatic contemporary interpreters of Portuguese national song. When he sings about love, suffering and the saudade with his iconic smoky voice, goose bumps are inevitable! At his side: the musicians of “The Fado of Truth”, who skilfully pluck their viola de fado and viola baixo. A musical sample can be found here, viva o fado!

Poppy - Artificial Nature in the City
Hoo, the poppy is in bloom in the Swiss Garden today! Or rather the dance performance of the same name by the collective Anima Fabrik, which transforms the park into a poppy field and itself into poppies! For 30 minutes, supernatural normality reigns, so to speak. Human flowers dance with flower humans. Nature reclaims the city. And the border between art and artificiality disappears. Sounds a bit abstract at first, but it's pretty cool. It's quite possible that you will want to fidget along and become an artificial poppy yourself. Several loops. Really smartly staged.

Theatre promises one thing above all: entertaining romance of conquest and a whole lot of heart! It doesn't matter whether there's a spark between John the Baptist and Salome. Or whether Rigoletto stands by his love-struck daughter Gilda. At the end of the amusing opera scenes from Arabella, Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte & co, the big happy ending always awaits.

There will be as many as 5 stations in the Seestadt. The programme stimulates the head and the heart: with a poetry slam by Mihret Kebede, music by Thulufisa and MaMoZi. And an exciting lecture about activists in the resistance against apartheid. There will also be South African delicacies. There you can see the legendary Spielberg classic Jaws, which has been providing beach vibe moments since 1975 – of the scary kind, of course ;-) But at least in the first 30 minutes, adventurous cinema holidaymakers can relax. That's how long it takes for the monster to first emerge from the crystal blue depths on the coast of the tranquil seaside resort of Amity Island near San Francisco. Even after almost 50 years, the film is still terrifying. Perhaps the Old Danube would be a better choice!

Treu am Platzl
Somehow the beautiful square in front of the Piarist church always reminds you of Italy. Especially in summer, when the entire space is used as a yard to sit. For almost 100 years, the cenerable Cafe Maria Treu was located here, now it’s new, more modern – and still as idyllic as ever. The makers of Ramasuri and Cafe Drechsler have taken over the place and now serve colourful cuisine with lots of healthy food in the shadow of the church. The breakfast menu in particular is mega-long and creative. And if you have trouble keeping your eyes open, they'll wake you up with a ginger shot or mini gin and tonic ;-) So nice here!
