editorial

"Heya Girls!"
If you summarise your work with the motto “Kraut in the City” and, according to self-description, spend your time with “MunchBotany", then you definitely have one thing: a sense of humour! But beyond that, the cheerful ladies of the Herbage Academy are also real pros and mostly dedicate themselves to Viennese wild herbs. Aside from courses and consulting, they host the first Viennese Herb Day on Sunday 7 October – in the theatre of Café Prückel. Refuelled by herbal coffee served in a doll cup, flower syrup, and finger food buffet, you can buy a lot of green-inspired stuff there: syrups, liqueurs, refined herbal specialties, nature-jewellery, honey, clothes with plant motifs, and pickled wild fruits. Most of the exhibitors are Viennese and would like to share their knowledge on plants and herbs on site. Apart from the herb market that’s going on, you can take a seat on red velvet chairs in the theatre and listen to free lectures centred on plants, wild herbs, and bees. For urban herb witches!

Wishing you an aromatic week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Jungle No. 9
Everything from Morocco, hand-made, and fairly produced: the newly hatched online shop “Jungle No. 9” specializes in home & living treasures. Now you can shop a large part of the assortment at a pop-up: from colourful recycling-poufs made from Moroccan wedding blankets to hand-woven cotton plaids and vintage rugs from the Atlas Mountains. And – so cute! – pink, life-sized flamingo-figures called Gustav or Günther ;-) “Das Luna”, where the pop-up sale is taking place, is also great: a trendy café-flower shop-thing, really nice!

AcroYoga: Thursday „Flight Club“
All good things come in threes: AcroYoga combines die wisdom of Yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics, and the loving kindness of the Thai Massage (NUAD). Meaning you do exercises in pairs to help you re-discover the quality of carrying and being carried, but also your own strength and gentleness. Always on Thursdays, you can try out AcroYoga at the Amazing Yoga Studio in the 15th district – even without previous experience or partner. After a short yoga-warm up-session and partner exercises come the flying and taking off! And at the end, there’s a fine Thai-massage!

Vienna City Gallery Walk
The plan for today: putting on some comfy shoes and going on an inner-city hiking day following the traces of art! Around 30 galleries in the 1st district will open their doors from 16:00 to 21:00 and offer art, guided tours, and vernissages. And there’s a lot to discover! From original “Wunderbra-jewellery” made from lingerie accessory parts by Haldis Scheicher in the V & V-showcase to the vernissage at Galerie Slavik by the Japanese artist Takajoshi Terajima, who wraps wishes into talismans on site and seals them according to a special tradition. Now that sounds promising!

Film Production walk
If there doesn’t happen to be a street that’s closed with a few spots standing around, you usually hardly notice film productions in Vienna. Even though the 7th district in particular is a true film district which is home to several production companies. You can now look behind the scenes at the first “Filmherbst Neubau”. For example at today’s production walk where film companies and institutions open their doors and industry experts (for instance from Amour Fou) use films, equipment and technology to tell about filmmaking. Also at the Filmherbst: workshops and screenings.

Anniversary: Die Piratin hat den besten Stoff
Now that’s quite an advanced age for a fashion design store ;-) For 25 years already, “Die Piratin hat den besten Sotff” (formerly “Gloom”) has been anchoring in Neubaugasse and this is being celebrated in style today. It starts with music, hullaballoo, and fashion show in front of the shop, where several of the more than 35 designers featured in the store with their labels will present new outfits and small collections. After that, a fine buffet plus cake is waiting inside, at around 22:00 they’re shutting up shop and the dance-willing can move on to the after-party. Ahoi and all the best!

Long Night of Museums
With only one ticket into all museums of the city until after midnight: countless museums in Vienna (and all of Austria) host visitors again for a whole night today, offering great specials for some well-rounded eye- and brain candy. Among them are renowned ones like MAK where you can experience a last night in the virtual world of Klimt’s “Magic Garden” or the mumok with an open studio where everyone can do some painting. But there are also curiosities: at Virgilkapelle, there’s a weird saints’ night going on and at Pratermuseum, tarot reader “Veronika Poposill” reads the future to the daring ;-)

#supportyourlocalgirlgang
Very cool shopping away from mainstream and off-the-peg clothing! The creative girlgang behind 15 Viennese labels, among them for instance Amateur, Vis A Vis, Ruins of Modernity and Susa Kreuzberger, have set up camp in Gumpendorferstraße for four days. The doors there are still open until Sunday, and it’s not only the ladies’ stylish creations from avant-garde fashion to multifunctional underwear, unusual stainless-steel jewellery, and refined scented candles are worth getting to know but also the people behind them. They are all women, and all of them produce sustainably and locally!

The Volunteer Fair is there with 80 NGOs, small associations, and initiatives that present their projects in an uncomplicated and specific manner and invite you to join them. Peter Stein reads Friedrich von Schiller
Hardly anybody knows this work anymore today, but with “The Ghost Seer”, Schiller wrote an important forerunner of the German crime literature. And today, this novel fragment featuring topics like necromancy and secret societies is delivered by no less a person than THE Peter Stein! The director and former theatre director reads the complete text by Friedrich von Schiller for the first time on 2 evenings, at the museum in the midst of pictures from the exhibition “Carlo Naya (1816-1882). Venice in early photographs”. Very, very cool!

Since the beginning of the year, she has also taken on another key role as general manager of the data management programme of Erste Bank. In the conversation with “Frau in der Wirtschaft”-chairwoman Martha Schultz tonight, the St. Johann-native will talk about what it means to survive in the shark tank that is the male-dominated finance industry and will also offer an interesting look into the future of the banking world.

Strong women in technology and science
Today is Ada Lovelace-Day (she was the world’s first programmer!), which is why today all women who have achieved great things in male domains in previous times are being brought in front of the curtain. Who researched, developed, and invented things, but didn’t get the recognition they deserved. The Technisches Museum is now honouring eight selected women with a new “Womens Gallery”. Different stations show their particular accomplishments in technology and science. Today, you can get to know these inventive women and their ingenious activities during a guided tour!

The Fur Coats
As if David Bowie meets Tame Impala: their invigorating mix of psychedelic garage rock with soul and funk elements is what makes “The Fur Coats” from Portland/Oregon so exciting. The ragtag, six-person group consists of members from the bands Charlie Hilton, Cat Hoch, and Wampire and is a close-knit collective from friends around the charismatic front man Christ Hoganson. Not just their individual sound is ingenious but the energetic live shows in particular, as well! Today, they rock the Fluc with their cool psych-soul-pop at a late hour. The good news for everyone with vision problems is that you can improve it! Namely through regular eye training, which kinesiologist Marianne Wöss is offering in a three-part evening course starting today. Fascination Japan: Monet.Van Gogh.Klimt.
Elegant-exotic, imaginative and expressive: Japanese art with its unique expression has heavily influenced western art. Especially the brightly coloured woodblock prints (“Ukiyo-e”) fulfilled desires for an unknown, mysterious culture at the end of the 19th century. From today, the new Japan-exhibition at Kunstforum shows how artists from Monet to Van Gogh and Degas – and later Toulouse-Lautrec and Kandinsky as well – have interpreted the Asian visual language. More than 150 exhibits illustrate the great “Fascination Japan”, beautiful!

Lunch concerts at Blüthner
Lunch break with music, what a nice idea! The informal lunch concerts at Pianohouse Blüthner in the city are starting again today: short 45 minute (piano-)concerts that are just made for unwinding. Singer Daniel Toth, accompanied by Anna Maurer, will start today by offering titbits from “The Great American Songbook”, then it continues on Wednesdays with Chopin, Beethoven, or „Impressionen from Estland“. And so nobody has to do without food in order to attend, you are allowed to bring lunch snacks and consume them during the concert. Quite something!

The love for Mid Century Vintage is what has united Carinthians Vanessa Vehovec and Daniela Verdel since their university days. One of them turned her apartment into a furniture storage even back then, the other works for an environmental NGO and is dealing with the topics of conserving resources and sustainability every day. Now they have opened a store together that offers enough space for all their treasures: from an elegant Thonet chair to a Czech showcase and a pastel-green painted medical cabinet. And fans of 50s/60s-design can also find some original Industrial Design lamps and glasses there. Nice!

What the Duck
In any case: original! The French vintage furniture, dark green walls, jungle wallpaper, stuffed ducks and a spectacular peacock make for an impressive atmosphere – restaurants are rarely this creative in Vienna. They serve two things in particular at the new venue on Yppenplatz: Dim Sum and duck. “From China to Ottakring – via Paris” is what the career-changer boss calls it. Countless Dim Sum variations are constantly presented by the staff at the tables, boldly and delicious filled – with Mac’n Cheese, Pulled Pork or black pudding & apple. The poultry tastes good too. Only the staff definitely needs some more practice.
