"Heya Girls!"
Dear ladies, I ask for a brief moment of silence (soft chimes in the background are allowed) and attention: this week CitySpotterGirl’s new book has been published! And this time it's all about small, fine, original shops and manufactories in Vienna. Are you looking for a chic dress, want to track down the latest home trends or give your best friend an unusual present? Then this is your city guide! The exquisitely beautiful book is full of inspiration and insider tips: charming boutiques, vintage dreams, sustainable general stores, cool design shops and stationery shops (where you always spend too much money, as we all know ;-) The timing is perfect, in three weeks Christmas will already be knocking on the door: the book is the ideal gift for yourself or to put it under the golden pine cones for your loved ones. So have fun, my dears, browsing and buying. You can take a sneak peek here!

Wishing you a shrill week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Workshop: Advent and Christmas pieces
The slow-flower-farmer Margrit De Colle is something like the It-woman among gardeners. On her farm in Styria, she grows local flowers and some rare herbs and puts them together in beautiful arrangements. Everything is sustainable, organic and supports biodiversity. So if you want to learn something about flower decoration, you’re in the right place! In today's online workshop, we make wintery crafts: Instructed by maestra De Colle, imaginative flower arrangements and decorations of all kinds are made – best of all, of course, with ingredients you collected from woods and meadows ;-)

Vom Hügel, 8322 Eichkögl. Online workshop. 2 December 16:00 to 17:30. 35 €. Web

 Tricky Women
Tricky Women animation film series
Speak up for women's rights! We are not only in the middle of a Lockdown, but also in the middle of the 16 Days against Violence against Women and Girls. The initiative is an annual reminder that the fight for equality and against lived aggression is not over. The animated film festival Tricky Women is currently showing short films about this issue free of charge. Each film can be watched online for two days. Right now, for example, it's the film #Polish_Women_Resistance, which 49 students animated in just two days as a protest against the abortion ban in Poland. Worth seeing!

Tricky Women, 1070 Vienna. Only online. Until 7.12. Each film is available for 48 hours. Web

Goodie Bag from WeihnachtsQuartier
Yes, that was a pity. Last weekend the WeihnachtsQuartier should have taken place at MQ. 1,000 square metres of design – and more than 100 creative minds selling their treasures, in other words: lots of great gifts. Of course, CitySpotterGirl would have been there with her books again as well. As we all know, something came up, and for the second time in a row – like last year – it had to be cancelled. As a consolation, there is a goodie bag with nice things from exhibitors worth 160€ to be won: Vienna posters by Dstrct, a bottle of Moccashot, Secret Santa dolls, etc. You can enter by email until 15 December!

Being creative during lockdown
Lockdown in Advent can really crush the Christmas spirit. What helps? Being creative! Making photo albums, designing scrapbooks or crafting personalised cards to loved ones are wonderful distractions from not being allowed to go out. And that's why Papeterie Herzilein is offering online shoppers a 20 percent discount on all creative products! With them, you can stamp, embroider, tape, or design pendants at low prices. Certain paricularly imaginative people might even make one or two Christmas presents themselves this year... The sale lasts only until 6 December!

 Martin Klein
Martin Klein & Band
Difficult to classify. And that’s precisely why it’s so exciting! Martin Klein is a pianist and singer-songwriter from Tyrol, but has long lived in Vienna. He writes pop ballads and solo pieces for the piano, composes melancholic film music and plays rock concerts with a band. His German and English lyrics are at times touchingly poetic, then pure understatement: There's no room for the two of us in this spaceship of feelings, but it’s all pretty cool. Klein was supposed to perform at the Sargfabrik today, but now you can watch him in your living room via video stream. For free!

 Leopold Museum Wien/ Manfred Thurnberger
Egon Schiele Symposium
Klimt and Schiele – such familiar names that it is almost necessary to re-examine and question their art from time to time. The Leopold Museum is doing just that today with Egon Schiele for an entire day. What does Schiele have to do with artificial intelligence or queer subculture? At the top-class Schiele symposium, the work and impact of the Viennese modernist will be discussed. And because philosophising about art no longer belongs in the dark closet, you can watch the whole day for free (!) via livestream – and even have your questions answered.

lila Flea Market
Every year before Christmas, Austro designer Lisi Lang clears out her warehouse and sells cool and really chic fashion pieces at sale prices – on one day only. But this year, everything is different, obviously! And somehow even better, because the coveted flea market had to be moved to the internet – and therefore lasts 2 weeks. But the lila flea market is huge again this year, there are hundreds of pieces to buy: prototypes, unique pieces, leftover highlights from the summer 2021 collection, treats from previous years, and a big cuddly jumper sale. Every purchase comes with a free lila fabric bag!

Hand painted ceramics from Urbino
An absolute insider tip! The Pasteria in Servitengasse is actually a pasta factory. But at the moment you can marvel at the beautiful plates on display in the delicatessen shop – and also buy them during Lockdown. The very special tableware comes from the Italian city of Urbino, which has been known for its majolica, or hand-painted ceramics, since the 15th century. The pieces are made individually by artist Augusto Gostoli, so they are absolutely unique. La Pasteria currently has small, large, and soup plates on offer. But if you ask, you could also soon be having teatime with a tea set ;-)

Already deposited your wish list with Christkind? Christmas wishes often involve a lot of money and stress. The Day of Wishes is meant to help you remember the wishes of your heart. The online workshop starts with a relaxed meditation before creating wish cards with picture collages. In between, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other course participants. Afterwards, the personal wishes are put down on paper using some creative writing impulses. Coach Beatrice Floh will guide you through an inspiring and contemplative afternoon.

Little Rosies Kindergarten
A 13-piece (!) jazz band with a sound somewhere between artistic background noise and very virtuoso jazz. The collective Little Rosies Kindergarten is young and their genre is “psychedelic” jazz: dark timbres, groovy improvisation and playful breaks in style. The experimental trance sounds of the Viennese band have even been reviewed in the N.Y. magazine “The New York City Jazz Record”. The concert series of the innovative musicians ends today at Porgy & Bess; you can listen via livestream. The finale may be called “Minimal”, but it's sure to be a big one. A must-listen!

Ice-skating at Engelmann
Yes, my ladies, this is allowed. Even during the current Lockdown. At Engelmann, the oldest artificial ice-rink in the world, you are allowed to do your laps and pirouettes at lofty heights on the roof. Since a distance of two metres is to be maintained, not as many skaters are allowed as at normal times. Which has an advantage: no crowds! There's also more room to practise ice dancing – after all, there's a racy ice disco every Friday from 17:30 :-) And if you no longer have skates, you can borrow some, of course, up to size 48. The 2G rule applies.

Engelmann, Syringgasse 6-14, 1170 Vienna. Mon 9:00 to 18:00, Tue+Thu+Fri until 21:30, Wed+Sat+Sun 19:30. 5.50 - 8 €. Web

Young Hitler
It was the most ambitious project to date at the Haus der Geschichte in St. Pölten. The special exhibition “Young Hitler. The Formative Years of a Dictator” was dedicated to Hitler's childhood and youth in the social context of the time around 1900 – and attracted a lot of international attention. Among other things, never-before-seen objects from the legacy of August Kubizek, a childhood friend of Hitler, were on display. The exhibition ended in spring, but can now be visited virtually. You navigate through all the rooms and get an insight into where nationalism, racial hatred and anti-Semitism came from.

Meditation Evening
Right now, we spend more time alone than usual, or rather: more time with ourselves! Meditating means consciously coming to rest and listening to yourself – an important tool to feel well, especially now, despite the pandemic and winter weather. Those who have trouble sitting still and not thinking can meditate with others today. A coach from the Shambala association, which is dedicated to holistic health, will guide the meditation, help to get into deep breathing and support relaxation. For beginners and advanced practitioners.

 Schönbrunner Marionettentheater
Marionettes: The Little Night Music
How delightful! Butterfly king, pink fairy, gnome and unicorn – for all those who could do with a little escape from reality, here's the video stream of the Schönbrunn Marionetten- Theater. The romantic ballet to the play by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is danced here by artistically carved and costumed puppets. Sophie and Thomas dream of fairytale meadows full of mythical creatures – including a unicorn, CitySpotterGirl’s personal favourite animal. And upon my word: no ballerina in the world floats across the stage like the pink fairy puppet...

For a relatively small amount of money, you can rent storage space, tools, a cutting table, various sewing machines (and their maintenance!), a washing machine, an ironing station and access to the shared costume and prop collection. Viennese Breakfast to go
The lesson learned from all the lockdowns: not being able to have breakfast at a café is hell. The traditional Viennese Konditorei Sluka has now thankfully taken on this wretched problem – and offers classic Viennese breakfast to go, in addition to sweets and a lunch menu. From 8:00, you can get a fresh croissant, butter, jam and coffee to take home, but you can also start the day lavishly with prosecco, freshly squeezed orange juice, raw ham, salmon and omelet. Everything is prepared by a professional. It's no substitute for a coffee house, but it's enough for daydreaming.

Albertina Modern: The 80s
Colourful, more colourful, 1980s! If you haven't made it to the exhibition at the Albertina Modern yet, don't despair – today there's an online guided tour. All the better, because the pluralism of style in the most important decade of modern art is crying out for explanation: Jeff Koons discovers kitsch, Cindy Sherman photographs only herself, Keith Haring becomes the epitome of non-conformity. And Austrians like Franz West, Brigitte Kowanz and Erwin Wurm somehow fit in seamlessly. Today you can find out how it all fits together via Zoom, including a Q&A session.

Wienerlied concert
Wienerlied live! Well, almost: actually via – you guessed it – livestream. This afternoon, not one but several Viennese song stars will be performing: Die Strottern, the dialect singing band Hermann, and the very super Viennese singer Tini Kainrath – and you can watch for free. Donations are, of course, welcome, and at this concert they are particularly useful: all proceeds go to Caritas Austria. They care for those in need, because: “Happiness is a bird, it's hard to catch, but quick to leave," as the original Viennese song virtuoso Carl Kratzl wrote.

Crappy weather plus Lockdown – you really have to bring out the big guns to lift the mood out of the basement. In culinary terms, that means: Give us soul food! Now! No problem, says Juliana Yunsook Jung and produces Korean street food in her truly flashy, truly bombastic pink-turquoise snack bar. The bubble tea, well, is a matter of taste. But the K-Dogs: flawlessly mood-lifting! Frankfurters and mozzarella are thickly coated with a mysterious dough, covered with various sauces and served on a stick. And for dessert, there's lucky fish made of waffle batter! Helps straight away ;-)
