"Heya Girls!"
I think I’ll need some time to get used to this. After more than half a year of lockdown, “normality” somehow seems strange to me. We're allowed to do everything again, for real? Cinema, theatre, hanging out for hours in a coffee house, even going on a short weekend getaway? Everything is possible. So it's perfect then that the CitySpotterGirl’s book “Landpartie. Entdeckungen im Land um Wien” (Discoveries in the countryside around Vienna) was published a few days ago in a brand-new, updated edition. I have compiled many wonderful tips from Lower Austria and Burgenland for you: tasty restaurants, cafes and mountain huts, funny shops and original tips for trips. So if you want to know where to find the best cake bars in the country, where to spend a cosy night and discover hidden garden gems, then “Landpartie” is the right read for you. You can now buy this beautiful book in every bookshop and online. By the way, you can take a peek here.

Wishing you a perfectly normal week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Waldmüller and the Viennese Biedermeier
Biedermeier is quite a much-quoted word these days. Is a bourgeois-idyllic lifestyle currently spreading in our society? What actually is Biedermeier? And is a look back at this epoch really a look at better times? The new exhibition at the Upper Belvedere tells of the time of Metternich's Restoration, the strengthening of the middle classes and their simultaneous retreat from the sphere of political responsibility into the private sphere. On display are works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and his contemporaries – also female artists such as Rosa Amon.

 Michaela Buerger
Michaela Buerger
Now, this is a great visual match for the “Landpartie” book. Especially when you know that Alexa Chung and Vogue columnist Veronika Heilbrunner are big fans of Michaela Buerger! The internationally acclaimed designer creates “hand knitwear” inspired by Austrian traditional costume. Born in Austria, Buerger has managed to bring knitted, crocheted and embroidered items to the luxury market with her Parisian label. Now she is in Vienna for three days to present her upcoming F/W collection. And the latest pieces are on sale with a 10% discount.

Baranka Park Memorial
For many centuries, the former Hellerwiese in Favoriten – today’s Belgradplatz with the Baranka Park – was a campsite and resting spot for different Roma and Sinti families dealing in carpets, textiles, and horses. Until 80 years ago. Because in autumn of 1941, all men, women, and children camping there were deported to concentration camps where most of them were killed. In remembrance of this, they play music and read today (online!) from 17:00 – with Harri Stojka (after whose murdered grandmother the park was named), Doron Rabinovici and the wonderful Ethel Merhaut Band.

The healing power of Ayurveda
Now, CitySpotterGirl is a big fan of Volker Mehl's Ayurveda cookbooks. He has now written a book together with professor Dietrich Grönemeyer, one of the most important German health experts for holistic medicine, in order to build a bridge from the 5,000-year-old healing art of Ayurveda to modern life in the West. Starting today, the two are also holding four online lectures to combine and pass on new and old knowledge. Not only will you learn a lot about medicine, but of course they will also be cooking live. All evenings can also be booked individually.

Anna Anderluh
A dip in the Old Danube and emerging with seaweed in your hair! Who doesn't dream of that after a long winter? The only catch – current water temperature: 15°! A concert at the Radiokulturhaus tonight remedies the situation. Anna Anderluh presents her new album – including her love song to the Danube Auen “Lobau”. Anderluh sings about the necessity of the senseless, the audacious and the stupid and moves virtuously between jazz and singer/songwriter. She describes her music as “pop with a crack”, which is at times tender poetry and then harsh social criticism.

Harald Schmidt & Michael Niavarani
The trees in the Schwarzenberg Garden are already in full sap, the leaves and grass are sprouting – and the “Theatre in the Park”, which has existed since last summer, is also getting underway again. This year, the two-hectare garden with its huge plane trees will once again be one of the cosiest outdoor venues in Austria. And it starts tonight with host Michael Niavarani and the grand master of satire Harald Schmidt. The two humourists meander freely through the jungle of their thoughts. Not even they themselves know where this will lead.

Sidai Design
When women work hand in hand and overcome continents... Sabina Ebner, who sells her pretty rings and necklaces at SchmuckStück, was in Tanzania in winter. The result of the journey is a cooperation with Sidai Design: the label works together with Maasai women who have developed their centuries-old craft of beadwork into contemporary jewellery collections. This way, the women receive a regular income that strengthens their independence – and from 20 May, a collection of the unusual, handmade jewellery will now also be available in Vienna.

From Throne to Reality
Six women, six characters, six destinies! This is a different way of approaching women's history – in this case the fate of Habsburg women. Using representative pieces of furniture, women whose lives unfolded in quite different ways are presented: Maria Theresa, her mother Elisabeth-Christine and her famous daughter Marie-Antoinette, plus Archduchess Sophie with her all-outshining daughter-in-law Sisi and her granddaughter Elisabeth Marie, the “red Archduchess”. An exciting journey through the world of the Habsburg women.

Orchid Walk in Alland
If you only know orchids that are grown in flower shops, you might be surprised: but there are actually almost 70 wild orchid species in Austria. From the well-known lady's slipper to the colourful marsh orchids and the inconspicuous alpine chamorchis. Orchids are good bioindicators – where they grow, nature is usually still intact. Twice today, you will have the chance of going on a hike leading to forest sites and semi-arid grasslands in the municipal area of Alland. With a bit of luck, around a dozen wild orchids can be observed in bloom!

Hemingway's Love Hell
She is the star of Josefstadt and plays great female characters with an edge like no other, he is a specialist for strong characters in film. Together, Sona MacDonald and Johannes Krisch set out today on the trail of the eccentric writer Hemingway, his wife Martha Gellhorn and his epistolary lover Marlene Dietrich. In a touching reading, enriched by songs by Dietrich that Sona MacDonald intersperses, they provide glimpses into a world in which war and love, passion and hatred, but also deep despair are close connected. Powerful!

Vienna Citrus Days

The collection there, started in 1647 (!), comprises 500 citrus plants, including many historical and rare ones. Due to Corona, the show cannot take place at Schönbrunn this year, but a great deal of effort has been put into moving it online. Distant Matriarchies
Artist Bianca Tschaikner is a frequent traveller. Tonight she shares – via live stream – stories and drawings from stays with two very special societies: the Khasi in Meghalaya (North East India) and the Minangkabau in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Khasi and the Minangkabau are both matrilineal and matrilocal cultures. Which means that everything belongs to the women! The family name and property are passed down through the female line, the husband moves into the wife’s house after marriage and the mother's brother takes over the role of the father.

Historical city tours by Loos
It is a small sensation! In 1913 and 1914, Adolf Loos who had just founded his “Bauschule”, led guided tours of buildings in Vienna's inner city and the 4th district. The architect thus sharpened the eye of the participants for the Viennese architectural traditions of Baroque and Classicism as well as for urban planning issues. The transcript of one of the excursion participants has indeed been preserved by the Wienbibliothek! On the basis of these surviving guides, three tours following Loos' footsteps have now been compiled.

 Petz
Hornmanufaktur Petz Store
He is the last of his kind in Vienna: Thomas Petz is the fifth generation to run the Hornmanufaktur founded in 1862, and the workshop in the 15th district has existed for 100 years. Now he has recently opened a store in Neubau too, and the fact that the great-grandson combines tradition with modernity is apparent at first glance: the curved ceiling is left completely raw, the jewellery is presented on plain metal shelves. And there is a lot to see: combs, hair bands, ear studs, decorative bowls, sunglasses – all handmade and each piece a beautiful unicum due to the grain and colour of the horn.
