"Heya Girls!"
Caution: infatuation! Normally, I try to avoid superlatives, but no matter what came before him and what will come after him: Man Ray is simply the greatest, coolest and most genius artist of the 20th century! Yes, of course (also) because of his internationally renowned photo portraits of friendly glamour stars from Paris and New York of the 1920s. But even more so because he had a unique aesthetic view and understanding of the world and was an important instigator for almost all artistic branches. Be it as designer and painter during Surrealism and Dadaism, experimental filmmaker, product designer, author, typo-designer or fashion designer for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Actually, there’s no corner of our everyday culture, in which his ideas and his work haven’t snuck in. From 14 February, 150 key works of the universal genius, who died in 1976, can be seen at the Bank Austria Kunstforum (art forum). You know where you’ll find me a lot of the time now ;-)
Wishing you a good week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Charlotte Klobassa
Sugar Cravings
If you’ve never heard of Charlotte Klobassa before, you absolutely have to look into the gallery Zeller van Almsick before 22 February. Because they’re currently showing the super-cool Sugar Cravings series of the 1987 born graduate of the University of Applied Arts and Viennese native. She just simply scribbled a bit with different pens like highlighters, coloured pencils, and pencils on paper (and also had others scribble). And afterwards, she translated the more or less random scribblings onto large-scale canvases with oil. The result: incredibly cheerful, abstract pieces of art that everyone wants!
Gallery Zeller van Almsick, Franz-Josefs-Kai 3, door 16, 1010 Vienna. Until 22 February Wed-Sat 12:00 to 18:00. Web

Jewellery and feathery art
To adorn yourself with borrowed plumes? That’s what you can do now at Schmuckgalerie Slavik, yes, it’s even encouraged! Because at the newly opened feather-jewellery-exhibition, lots of winged (and conveniently light as a feather) exhibits are real lookers and tempt you to try them on. If you’re the rooster type, you’ll choose the stylish, feathery gowns, stoles, and decorative collars by Maria Baumschlager. Somewhat more timid hens might prefer the witty-colourful headpieces by Birgit Sophie Metzger or the soft and smooth colliers by Gudrun Arp. Ruffling your feathers can be so pretty!
Galerie Slavik, Himmelpfortgasse 17, 1010 Vienna. Until 17 March Wed-Fri 10:00 to 13:00 + 14:00 to 18:00, Sat 11:00 to 17:00. Web

Martha High
Why bombshell soul divas often team up with “difficult” men, CitySpotterGirl has no idea ;-) Fact is, after more than 30 years alongside the “king of funk” James Brown, background singer Martha High finally called it quits. Many musical coups with mega stars like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Prince, and others followed. But since 2004, the full-blooded musician with her incredible voice and charisma has been travelling solo for the most part! Tonight, she will enchant the Viennese audience with her current band The Soul Cookers. Listen in here!

Sex Guru/ette
It’s not every day that you see such juicy pieces, even at Eden Bar ;-) “The World’s Funniest Sex Guru” Wolfgang Weinberger is in Vienna and, after big hits in London, will now present his cabaret hit “Sex Guru/ette” in this part of the world. And that in German! Over 500,000 people have already laughed themselves silly over the intelligent gags and revelations about love, sex, and tenderness. So it’s about time to finally see the likeable comedian live, too! After all, he supposedly knows what women really want, how many times “it” is decent, and whether size matters. We’ll see :-)

The finest piece goods are piling up, from spring-like polka dots to winter-woolly double herringbone patterns. Swelltime 50’s Party
Ah, finally, style is returning to this city! Get your petticoat, ladies – Gartenbaukino is firing up a time travel machine! Because after the last cinema showing (the 6-times Oscar-nominated film “Phantom Thread”, which you could include in this adventure) it’s all about swinging and dancing like there’s no tomorrow! For one night, the cinema’s foyer is transformed into a 50s/60s dance parlour. Obviously, there’s a dress code, otherwise dancing off to music from Nat “king” Cole, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry-hits would only be half the fun. Includes cocktails and a midnight’s show!

Detox Day: Seminar & Cooking class
Knowledge is power! That applies to life in general, and in particular when it comes to the new trend and magical word “detox”. Today, you can dedicate a whole day to getting educated on detoxing and cleansing (and bombard nutritionist Claudia Nichterl with all questions you might have). For example, what’s actually the deal with metabolism and acid-base balance. If it’s really true that fatigue and allergies can be reduced via alkali foods. How it’s all connected and what you can do to improve your overall wellbeing in concrete terms. And for lunch, a detox-meal will be prepared together!

Camellia & Azalea blossom
It all started in the year 1776 when Swedish natural scientist Karl Peter Thunberg illegally brought four camellias from his Japan expedition to London. Three specimens were given to the Imperial Gardens, one of them ended up in Schönbrunn. To this day, the Palm House is in possession of a historic collection of camellias. As always, this is the time they start blossoming, way back in the so-called cold room. Now you can pay a visit to these colourful beauties with their irresistible scent – along with an impressive selection of azaleas. Ah, spring is finally here!

Kodo: Evolution
The Japanese “devil’s drummer group from the land of Sado” is once again touring the world to show off their traditional rhythms and compositions. Today, the exceptional musical acrobats are in Vienna, inviting you to dream along to their sometimes martially-fierce, sometimes meditative-dreamy drumming sounds. If you want to get into the right mood already, listen in here. But of course, this Japanese heartbeat & pulse percussion jamboree is not just a joy for the ears but also really easy on the eyes. Because the artists are quite ripped. Grin.

World Cancer Day
During the last fifteen years, cancer has evolved from a deadly to a chronic disease. New medication and new therapies (for instance for breast cancer and leukaemia) bring hope, but they also present new challenges to doctors as well as those affected. Today at Altes AKH, you can get some first-hand information from top medical practitioners in the course of the Vienna Cancer Day. There will be special lectures on topics like skin cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer. Plus, members of self-help groups will be available for conversations. Free entry!

  Ellen von Unwerth
Ellen von Unwerth: Wild Wild West
Ellen von Unwerth’s world-famous photography work is as fateful as her life. Its most important stations in a time lapse could be summarised as follows: orphanage, Circus Roncalli and Paris, where the beauty worked as a top model in front of the camera for years. Today, she prefers to be behind it! Incidentally, it was at a fashion shooting in Kenya where she was inspired by children to grab the camera herself. Her newest Wild West series highlighting Milli Brown and other cowgirls in a frivolous-cheeky way can now be seen at Leica Store!

The stock includes: furniture, clothing, electrical appliances, decorative articles, books, recording media, and fashion jewellery. The assortment changes daily! Phat Tuesday
Tonight, the cabaret fever has broken out at Brick-5! And as it’s fitting for a real revue show, a colourful mix of music, dance, and show acrobats heats up the thrilling mood. The musical entertainment includes soprano singer Sarah Marie Kramer, pianist Chanda VanderHart and the Freestyle Orchestra who will all give the audience goosebumps (among others with Gershwin and Poulenc pieces). In between, the Viennese hot Box Girls will pour on their burlesque charm. And after the aerobatics and the fire dances are over, it’s off to rocking the dance floor (together)!

Stairway to Klimt
In the Klimt anniversary year 2018, it’s quite likely that we will get to see a few Klimt highlights. One of them, the magnificent cycle of paintings in the entrance hall of the Museum of Art History, floats – hard to see – 12 metres above ground. But from today, it will be possible to admire it at close range! A huge Klimt bridge weighing four tons and built specifically for this purpose gets you up close to the detailed masterpiece. Make sure to take enough time for the individual style sections created by young Gustav together with his brother Ernst and painter friend Franz Matsch.

Menstruation background
What do I think about my cellulite? Would I prefer having a different gender? How emancipated am I? Why don’t I have my period? Do I want kids? How much do I earn? Is that still an issue? Oh yeah. Am I aggressive or already solidary? When will prince charming come? What time is it? How old am I? Am I too old? Am I too young? Of course I want kids! Do I want my kids? What happened to my beauty?  Why am I so smart? Why do I have so many feelings? Do I want another beer? Stupid question. Tragic-comical theatre on the topic of being a woman!

A penis and vagina have to be found at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, then you could slap the naked “Arscherl” (bum) at Donnerbrunnen (it brings luck!), or trace Casanova’s steps in Spiegelgasse. One Billion Rising
Worldwide, one in three women is beaten or raped at some point in her life. To set a visible sign against this form of violence, the American feminist Eve Ensler has declared Valentine’s Day as V-Day in 2012. And initiated the “One Billion Rising” campaign! So every year since then, million women from 19 countries take to the streets on 14 February to dance together for a life free of violence. Vienna is taking part too! At 16:30, the dancing starts at Mariahilfer Straße, at 17:30 at Dschungel Wien and from 20:00 at Galerie Werkstatt NUU. Big after-party!

Master class graduates Elisabeth Leitner and Victoria Lohninger were supposed to tailor men’s jackets. But the love for lingerie came and conquered them. Good for Vienna’s women, who can now acquire handcrafted sexy bralettes, panties and babydolls in their small atelier-shop “Körbchen” in Webgasse (don’t be confused: it’s also the home of Sabrina Vogel’s fashion). Tipps der Stadtspionin
Every now and then, you just need a venue where it’s not hip, loud and fun. But rather subtle and elegant. For business meetings, for a conversation that is nobody else’s business, or for a quiet lunch break. Philigrano in the first district is just that – and on top of all that, they offer great Italian cuisine. Their menu is not overly long but varied – from pasta to fish. Even Spaghetti carbonara (sometimes too fat) are tasty here. The service is friendly and the furnishing of the (almost) new restaurant is as purist as it is chic. Benvenuto!
