Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Well ladies, how are you doing? Is life boring? Or is it hot? You can probably tell by the style that it wasn’t me who phrased these questions ;-) It’s the smart-sassy and award-winning young cabaret stars Ulrike Haidacher and Antonia Stabinger who are behind these questions. The Graz-natives alias “Flüsterzweieck” absolutely agree on one thing: Something’s got to happen in life! Preferably something amazing, groundbreaking, unexpected! Phew! In their current theatre cabaret show called “Stabile Eskalation” (sounds good to me!) they flex their muscles, searching our comfort zone for uproar. Concepts are tossed overboard, things are turned upside down, hard facts are presented, a hit song is butchered – all while, in passing, inventing a new genre: the didactic sketch with moral. Subtle, silver-tongued, and artfully acted – nobody does it better than women ;-) Crack up here!

Wishing you a sassy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

KosmosTheater, Siebensterngasse 42, 1070 Vienna. Until 23 March 20:00. 19 €. Web

sounds from within
Cultural diversity as musical experiment: musicians from all (cardinal) directions are on stage today at Akzenttheater and show Austria’s eclectic multiculti musical creativity under the motto “sounds from within” – with all the desired boundary crossings! One of the three concert couplings: Kurdish singer Sakina, who interprets traditional women’s songs from her home in her very own, touching way, and the Austrian-Finnish band “Satuo” that moves around between folk, pop, bluegrass and maybe also a bit of jazz and tango. Great!

Magic Circle
As early as in the Middle Ages, women who had ability, (healing) powers and knowledge were vilified and persecuted. But even today, icons like Lana del Rey (she called for cursing Donald Trump on Twitter) or, in these parts, Alice Schwarzer and Elfriede Jelinek are quickly branded as unwelcome witches. Now, the exhibition Magic Circle is dedicated to the female power of mysticism and revolt. It features historical and current “witch”-objects, paintings and performances, like the powerful witch claw “Metal Goddess” by Roxanne Jackson. Opening’s today!

Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Herrengasse 13, 1014 Vienna. Vernissage 22 March 19:00. Free entry. Web

VinziRast Easter Market
If you want to make Easter cheerful and hopeful for as many people as possible, all you have to do is undertake the filling of your Easter nests at VinziRast. They’re having a market there for two days where all gifts – from bread baskets and egg cosies to board games and stools – have been made by refugees. And this done by hand in the course of the integration project VinziChance. And the best thing about it: these unique pieces are incredibly pretty! And they can be acquired in exchange for a donation. Like colourful patchwork floor cushions and cachepots made from linen. Plus, the big bike check event is today!

Stock Sale Verlag für moderne Kunst
Pretty and expensively produced (picture) books are highly regarded at the moment. So if you have a soft spot for art- and artists’ books, you absolutely have to make a detour to the stock sale of publishing house Verlag für moderne Kunst. The publisher is moving soon and, with a heavy heart, parts with beautiful Keith Haring and also Andy Warhol publications. Besides, there’s tons of monographies and exhibition catalogues of Austrian artists like Brigitte Kowanz or Erwin Wurm to snatch. For bargain prices, naturally. Have fun browsing through remaining stocks and enjoying the welcome drinks!

Lustig ist das nicht...
There’s always room for a progressive, humorous, self-critical (and thus unfortunately rare) men’s perspective in CitySpotter’s Newsletter ;-) This is just what Tyrolean comedian Joseph Holzknecht is offering with his new program “This isn’t funny…” in Vienna today and tomorrow. Only the title is inaccurate because you’re guaranteed to have fun with “Stempfler Sepp”! Tiroler Tageszeitung called him “pretty funny and smart”. And CitySpotterGirl, well, she’s having quite a grand time with this firework of jokes about relationship madness, emotional intelligence and lonely owners of thuja hedges.

Tulku Lobsang: Boundless Love
Balm for heart and mind: At the Buddhist retreat starting this weekend, you literally get wrapped up in (spiritual) love. The extremely likeable and smart Buddhist master and Tibetan medic introduces people to the principles of his peace-loving religion. His lectures are about boundless love and how to generate compassion for oneself and others. He teaches the “meditation of loving kindness and compassion” with the goal to develop as calm and clear a mind as possible – without being inwardly churned by negative emotions. Worth a try ;-)

Sinnesrauschen at Haus der Musik
This will make your ears ring, murmur and tingle! As many as four power-bands will be playing in the glass-covered inner courtyard at Haus der Musik, doing more than justice to the festival’s title “Sinnesrauschen”. Trio Three for Silver from Portland starts off the event at 19:30, a band that promotes a croaky Rock complete with accordion, violin and mandolin (yes!). They are followed by the domestic Indie stars Catastrophe & Cure with melancholic tracks, then duo Cari Cari with melodic folk. And last but not least, Farewell Dear Ghost will animate your senses with Indie & Pop-glitter. Cool!

Earth Hour „Lights Out”-event
Better hurry and quickly stock up on candles! Because it’s lights out from 20:30 until 21:30! WWF is calling once again to the biggest climate protection join-in event in the world. And because every child, not counting the questionable Donald Trump, has realised that we have to finally put a stop to ozone hole, the disappearance of glaciers & co, there is a joint effort to take a stand and save energy. In Vienna, apart from private homes, many Hofer & Ikea branches as well as landmarks such as Schönbrunn will remain dark. In the meantime at MQ, Earth Hour Festival is being celebrated!

She is one of the most successful international Austrian jazz singers of today, and yet hardly anyone knows her name over here: Simone Kopmajer. Today, you have the chance to change that! Because for once the tour jetsetter won’t perform in the US, in Israel, or Thailand, but at Porgy & Bess in the middle of Vienna. Together with her band and saxophone legend Terry Myers (who has already performed with jazz icons like Ray Charles or Natalie Cole), she will share melodious goosebumps-songs and heartache-tracks from her current album “Good Old Times”.
