Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Now I don’t know if everything was better during the 18th century, but it was certainly spectacular and groundbreaking! The enlightenment made science socially acceptable, one technical achievement followed the next, but there were also Freemasons, charlatans, and mystics who went looking for purpose and truth. On 3 February, it’s this specific Zeitgeist that is being brought to life with all its social customs – namely by the association zeitenTanz, which hosts a big Ars Magica Scienciae ball in the beautiful, historic mirror hall at Tanzschule Hernals. Here, reason and mysticism, but also high-spirited ball attendants will be dancing together. On the program: funny performances of the formerly popular Mesmer-therapy (which cured everything from toothache to hallucinations) and of course many original quadrille and minuet dances. Great chance for a journey through time! Don’t forget your costume, improvising is allowed ;-)

Wishing you a cheery week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Contemporary Sake Weeks at Shiki
Since it’s still quite a bit of time until the cherry blossom, Japan fans are currently being favoured with another highlight at the first-rate Japanese restaurant Shiki ;-) They’re still celebrating sake-time until 3 February! And since one sake is not like another, the likeable sake-sommelière Yuri Iwata lets gourmets and curious people in on the complex tasting world of the iconic Japanese rice wine. Obviously, the exclusive rice-Koji-liquids are being accompanied by a specially prepared 5- or 6-course menu. The banquet includes guinea fowl with Tsukune balls or pastries filled with plum jam and Mochi. Kanpai!

Divas! Les Grandes Allures
Singer Kerstin Heiles has always had a thing for the grandes dames: first, she slipped into the role of Marilyn Monroe in her film revue, then she paid homage to Edith Piaf at the Chanson night, and in her final show, she paid tribute to Whitney Houston. But why choose one musical grande dame if you can get all of them onto the stage together?! Tonight, the entertainer will present a colourful mix of her favourite diva hits from Zarah Leander to Adele. This is certainly gonna be fun, especially since she’s also planning on spilling some secrets from her own private diva existence ;-)

Common illness fever blisters
It starts with tingling and pulling in the area around the lips – and before you know it, there it is, a fever blister! If untreated, it quickly develops into a painful thing that isn’t just not pretty cosmetically but also highly contagious. The itching and aching blisters are caused by the widespread Herpes simplex virus – in Austria alone, more than 2 million people suffer regularly. There are many household remedies and tips on possible treatments, but only few really sensible therapeutic approaches. Today, Dr. Klein will talk about the background and effective therapies!

MILCH PopUp at Zuckerkringl
There’s a twofold sweet pleasure to be found at the pretty Zuckerkringl Kekswerkstatt today and tomorrow! Firstly, you can acquire the new best fashion pieces at the PopUp from MILCH-designer Cloe Baumgartner. Who has long built a reputation with her hip upcycling label (and won the favour of fashionistas!). All pieces are made from “retired” men’s clothes, like currently the cool pant dress Klara or the vest Ken. Secondly, they actually do serve milk and cookies! And: DIYers can go to her sewing workshop at Das Packhaus on 4 February and sew some nice clothes themselves.

Bruno Gironcoli
He was one of the greatest and most idiosyncratic artistic personalities of the 20th century: the sculptor Bruno Gironcoli, who unfortunately died in 2010. He gained public recognition with his large-scale sculptures made from steel, gesso, and wood, which took a few low-loaders and special transports more than once (for instance to the Venice Biennale). But not today! Because for the first time, this retrospective exhibition at mumok will show his sketches, graphic works and drawings. Even on paper, Gironcoli’s works push all the boundaries and limits. Today’s the vernissage, with free entry!

Memorial for Ute Bock
Now for a sad turn. Social worker and philanthrope Ute Bock, who campaigned for unprejudiced interaction with refugees to the last, died on 19 January. But born 1942 in Linz, she’s always had a streak for the public welfare! First as an educator, later as home director and, after her retirement, even as initiator of her integration association Ute Bock. In 2012, she was awarded the Decoration of Honour in Gold of the Republic of Austria for her tireless efforts and her work for refugee aid. Tonight, fans will pay their respects. Earth Market
Since the Landpartie newsletter is still on winter break, this tip leads to beautiful Burgenland. In Parndorf, a pleasant “Earth Market” takes place regularly. There’s only 20 of them in the world because they have very strict slow food criteria: only products produced with traditional methods within a 40-km radius. By the way, it’s not just the products that are great, it’s also getting to know all the special people behind them. In keeping with the motto “warmth from the inside”, the butchery Karlo is a guest there with its chili-Leberkäse today, and apple farmer Vera Leeb grafts apple trees. Simply bring a scion!

sampleSale at elfenkleid
And here we go with the ball season! You could at least secure a fitting gown for dancing the night away, because there’s currently the sampleSale happening at elfenkleid. There’s an incredible discount of up to -80% on a selection of dreamy evening gowns from older collections, many in size medium that have small signs of wear or minor textile flaws. For instance the model “Bloom” in red, which is simple at the top and silky-puffy at the bottom, the Italo-inspired classic gown “Ivory” or the fine-net lace-y frock “Glow”. And the “normal” autumn/ winter collection is at least 40% off.

Give away of skills
How liberating and heartwarming when it’s not all about time and money for once! Like at today’s give-away-event of Vienna’s resource pool, where you trade exclusively with knowledge, (manual) skills, and creativity. Objects are not allowed, but if you have something to give away immaterially, you’re very welcome! This ranges from oil crayon painting to improv dancing or repairing things. Depeche Mode
Alright, they may have gotten a bit older, but lead singers Dave Gahan and his partners Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher still got it after 37 years! Because that’s how long it’s been since CitySpotterGirl bought their debut album Speak & Spell and officially became a Depeche Mode fan :-) After their sold-out concert summer 2017, the boys are now on Global Spirit Tour in all of Europe again. Today, they make a halt in Vienna at Wiener Stadthalle. So, why not go there, revel a bit in melancholy and let yourself get inspired once more?!

Super Bowl Party
Admittedly, this sport is a bit complicated. But once you get the hang of it (and it’s not harder than that stupid offside rule in soccer), there is hardly a more thrilling sport than American Football. More and more people in Vienna seem to agree, for there are several locations where you can watch the Super Bowl: share the thrill of the final game of the US Football League live, for example at Arcotel Wimberger (buffet included) and at the Hard Rock Café, where classic Hot Dogs are served with the touchdowns. Well then: Philadelphia Eagles vs New England Patriots! Justin Timberlake will sing during the break.

Medusa’s Bed
Feminism alert! The gifted performer, author and musician Lydia Lunch is on tour through Europe with two power-colleagues. Tonight at Café Korb, the trio don’t mince their words, sing, rant, rock and whirl around feminist ideas at the force of a tornado in both words and sound. As could probably be expected, their songs are all about sex, politics and broken hearts ;-) Let’s go then: how often do you get the chance to listen to nocturnal powerful singing accompanied by avant-garde violin arrangements plus psycho-ambient laptop sounds. Sofia Rei
Well, the Viennese Sargfabrik is currently resounding with world music at its finest. One of the hottest singers in NYC right now, Sofia Rei, is in town! The Argentina native creates an almost ethereal-sacral atmosphere with her truly unusual mixture of South American folk, flamenco and jazz. You can kind of tell that she studied opera before two of her three albums made it onto the best-of-the-word list of the Independent Music Awards. Her new program is dedicated to Chilean folk icon Violeta Parra. Powerwoman pays homage to powerwoman!

On the centenary of Klimt’s death, filmmaker and virtual reality artist Frederick Baker has brought it to new high-tech three-dimensional life at MAK! Today it’s once again off to a secret place you’d normally never get to see! To Arik Brauer’s private villa in the 18th district – or rather to its huge basement, which is where the private collection of paintings of the famous Viennese painters is being kept. No less a figure than daughter (and singer) Timna Brauer will guide you through her father’s marvellous picture world. The fact that she’ll tell one or two secret details, telling about her childhood in this exceptional artistic family gives the tour an exciting touch. Be on time. And by no means ring the bell! Forests in the city
Yes please! More trees on the roofs! More meadows in the city! Smart urban gardeners already know that creating more green areas in a city automatically leads to a better quality of life. But today, Conrad Amber knows and shows how exactly „living” facades, lavender heaths, avenues of fruit trees and naturally shaded parking areas can be integrated into the cityscape. The photographer and “tree ambassador” will present successful city greening (& beautification) showpiece projects from his current book “Baumwelten”. Many great ideas, also for your own walls.
