"Heya Girls!"
At least one highlight of the year will take place despite Corona. The Vienna Design Week is in town and is shaking things up with exhibitions, workshops and side events all over the place! Especially in this year's focus district of Meidling, where this year's festival headquarters is located – in the former district office Theresienbadgasse. In the 18th century, Maria Theresa had an exclusive spa for the imperial family built on this historic site. From here you can whizz through the city, countless special exhibitions, open studios, pop-ups and secret “Passionswege” invite you to make aesthetic discoveries. In a former tanning salon, the Design Week gathers the rising stars of this year's festival, in the Hotel 25hours you can record your own records, gap sites become temporary gardens, and the City of Vienna presents corona-compliant benches for public spaces. And co/rizom demonstrates how to make traditional handicrafts – here rustic chairs and textiles from Transylvania – marketable (photo). I’d say: a packed programme!

Wishing you a wild week,

viennacontemporary 2020
Art Basel has been cancelled, Miami as well – but in these parts here you can immerse yourself in gaudy and up-to-date art these days. For Austria's largest international art fair starts today in the Marx Halle. As many as 65 galleries from the local Hilger to the London l'étrangère and institutions from 16 countries are participating, and the works of hundreds of artists can be admired. In addition: great side events such as talks and guided theme tours for art fans in a hurry. Because of Corona, timeslots will be allocated in advance. So, eyes wide open and get to it ;-)

 Aux Gazelles
Morocco in Vienna
So, summer is over now and with it the chance to take a holiday. Fortunately, the Aux Gazelles now brings a varied Moroccan program to us here in Vienna for 1 week! On the Grand Bazaar there are North African treasures to buy every day: poufs, Tuareg jewellery, Berber carpets, natural cosmetic oils and olive wood from Essaouira. On Saturday, delicious figs and dates are sold at the weekly market “Marché aux Gazelles” and in the evening, you learn to use typical spices in a cooking course. If you then need a holiday from your holiday, you can book a hammam treatment ;-)

Hemayat’s Summer Party
This could be a dream come true: Who would like to be guided through the Burgtheater by Caroline Peters? Who would like to join Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler in private for a soccer match? Who wants to be read to by Vea Kaiser in their own living room? For this, you have to go to Palais Schönburg in the park this evening! There, at Hemayat’s summer party, “donations of time” by celebrities will be auctioned off – for the benefit of traumatized survivors of torture and war who receive psychological help from Hemayat. You can bid online here.

Ankathie Koi
With her skin-tight leather outfits, brightly coloured make-up and bleached mullet, Ankathie Koi is also a visual show. Tonight, the Bavarian pop-belter will offer an audio treat at the Konzerthaus. On stage, she will be flanked by drums, bass and guitar. In combination with her distinctive voice, this results in an 1980s sound with quite some bang. Because her concerts are real stage successes, the show has even been moved to the larger Mozart Hall. Those beats will make your limbs start fidgeting with dance fever for sure ;-) Loud, dazzling and outrageously cool.

Andy Warhol Exhibits
Pop-art icon Andy Warhol created a very specific artist image for himself. During his lifetime, he forbade the public showing of his early works from the 1950s. But that’s exactly what the mumok is presenting from today in “Andy Warhol Exhibits”. You can only get in for the start today if you register online beforehand, entry is free! The more than 200 exhibits include works that have hardly ever been shown before, such as prints and drawings showing the male body, drags, and homoerotic symbols and gestures. His paper sculptures have never been on display before. Exciting!

Late Night Shopping + Pop-up
Unusual shopping twice: “Himmelblau & Rosarot” shows the latest fall fashion on the beautiful terraces of the restaurant Sperling im Augarten today: classic everyday fashion and brightly coloured fashion treasures from all over Europe. This will only take place when the weather is good. And in the evening, late night shopping is on at the fine concept store “The Viennese Guy”: there's a fashion raffle in front of the store, presented by drag queen Candy Licious. Inside there are Viennese labels like Anna Albrecht with her illustrations and upcycling bags by Anne Hermine.

Alma Mahler meets Lina Loos
What would the art muse Alma Mahler, the greatest femme fatale of Vienna, and the courageous actress and author Lina Loos have to say to each other? They two will meet today at the free guided tour of “Geschichte spaziert in Wien”. The two women are embodied by Austria Guides in beautiful costumes, who know more about the two of them than the fact that they were wives of famous men. Until Sunday the tours (without any kitsch!) will lead through the eventful lives of historical celebrities, the last one tomorrow is Egon Schiele at the Klimt Villa.

1. Women’s Distance Run
The Women's Run did not take place this year, but a certain competitive atmosphere is simply the best motivator in sports. Anyone who has missed it in recent weeks can take part in the first “Women's Distance Run”. The starting signal will be fired twice, with a time delay and with 99 runners each time. The runners complete a 5km stretch along the Prater Hauptallee to the Lusthaus and back again. Nordic walkers may participate in the second round. The running event is also the first with contact tracing: The participants receive a distance marker as digital support.

Today would have been Monument Day, but it had to be cancelled. Fortunately, the free special guided tours in the National Library that had been planned for that occasion can still take place. (You only have to pay the entry fee). One of the six guided tours with the motto “Building and Education” will take you through the State Hall, which houses the beautiful Baroque library. Also included: an introduction to the current show commemorating Beethoven's 250th birthday. Other tours take in the Museum of Literature, where Franz Grillparzer worked, and the only Globe Museum in the world.

Alsergrund concert picnics
This concert is entirely without everything: there’s no stage construction, no sound or lighting system. This decelerated music Sunday takes place in Sigmund Freud Park without electricity. So just pack a blanket and a bit of food and put it – at a distance – in the meadow. Then chill out “unplugged”: trumpet, flugelhorn and guitar provide the jazzy sound – and singer (and trumpet player) Michaela Rabitsch of the acoustic band knows how to prevent herself from being drowned out: a megaphone replaces the microphone ;-) Should rain put a spoke in their wheel, there’ve already set an alternate date on 4 October.

European Street Food Festival
You can taste yourself around the globe in the open air in front of the Stadthalle in a Corona-proof way the whole weekend. At the European Street Food Festival, chefs cook freshly prepared dishes from far away countries at stands and food trucks: Brazilian BBQ skewers, juicy Burgundy roast with caramelised onions or Scandinavian flaming salmon cooked over an open fire. Yum! Exotic is the Maori steak from New Zealand with a kiwi fruit sauce. The choice may be difficult: Far Eastern, Mediterranean or vegetarian, here you can find everything in one place.

1. Vienna Women’s Health Week
For years “fem vital” in the Vienna Rathaus has been a day dedicated to female health. After a little rescheduling due to Corona, the event can now be held online this year as “Vienna Women's Health Week”. From September 28 to October 2, there will be an extensive free program with live streams, documentaries and interactive courses on five main topics. The program starts today with mental health: a morning yoga session, online lectures on happiness makers and, for relaxation, clips on YouTube from “Bauch, Beine, Po/mmes”, which deals with absurd body trends in a humorous way.

Floating Gardens
The city has a brand-new leisure spot! In the morning, the last building fences will be cleared away, and from midday today the “floating gardens” are open to the public. The free island oasis has been created along the Danube Canal over the summer, following the Parisian model: 120 metres of concrete surfaces have been landscaped and wooden decks stretching across the water over to the Kaiserbadschleuse. Now you can stand and sit on them in the middle of the Danube Canal! In an interview Architect Carla Lo told CitySpotterGirl how she used the site to create an extended living room for the city.

Deck Chair Sale
In my childhood in the country, summer was irretrievably gone when the autumn crocuses were blooming and the mist hung around the fields for days on end. In the city, it’s different. There the final takeover of autumn is demonstrated by the closing of the beach bars. Like the Strandbar Herrmann near Urania. But as a goodbye, the Strandbar will bestow the perfect bargain upon us: tons of deck chairs will be sold for just 10 euros per piece! The good purpose behind the event: all proceeds will be given to SOS Kinderdorf Wien.

Health implications of Corona
There is so much information to read and hear about the Corona virus every day that you can easily lose track. How does an infection progress, how do patients feel afterwards and what might be secondary diseases? The expert Arschang Valipour reports certain findings in a way that the general public can understand. During the popular Mini-Med lectures, the lung specialist explains the basics, the latest facts and current figures to interested and lay people. Drawing at Weltmuseum
Fruit bowls are so yesterday: In the “Light and Shadow” workshop, very special exhibits are put on paper with artist Astrid Esterlus. The drawing takes place in the North and Central America section of the Weltmuseum and each person can decide for themselves which piece to paint: perhaps the majestic feather headdress in bright green or a corn goddess made of stone with particularly dark and light contours. Please bring your own sketch pad and drawing utensils, the museum offers chairs so that you can take a really close look at the model of your choice.

Hitler's Daughter
What if Hitler had had a daughter? Australian author Jackie French asked herself this question in the late 1990s and promptly wrote a bestseller. Could the fictional daughter “Heidi” have possibly influenced her father? How would she have perceived the NS era? The bestseller became a play, which is now being performed in German for the first time. The story is told from the perspective of four 14-year-old schoolchildren and deals with the question of responsibility of young people and the critical reflection of their own view of the world. Exciting content!

Concert by Anna Mabo
Songs about old dogs, broken radios, lonely grannies – and always about love. Anna Mabo's debut album sounds (and feels) like you are sitting on a bench in the park and a friend plays you her songs on the guitar. The 24-year-old Viennese doesn't need much: a few chords, an acoustic guitar and playful, witty rhymes. Often about men – the annoying ones that explain the world to women, as well as the funny and endearing ones. In the Theater am Spittelberg she plays lively tunes, gentle ballads and critical songs in the evening. Wicked and so funny ;-)

Two young Austro-Chinese open a Cafe Bistro, call it ukiyo-e after the Japanese art movement, whose attitude to life corresponds to our “carpe diem”, and enjoy cooking Bao Buns, which originally come from Taiwan. That’s how cuisine is done in Vienna today. The two congenial cousins opened their stylish restaurant a week ago. The menu is small but unusual. Above all (besides really good wholegrain Bao Buns) they serve breakfast all day: sweet potato rösti, sweet Bao Buns and pancakes with mushrooms.
