editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Corona almost put a spoke in my wheel there. But then everything worked out by a hair’s breadth, after all. I wanted to bring a dream of mine to reality: to explore the underground of Vienna and write a book about it. Since the Middle Ages, there has actually been a real city under the city in Vienna – and exciting parts of it can be visited and experienced anytime until today. There are day spas in 500-year-old vaults, wine clubs in the deepest cellars of Vienna, swimming pools and galleries in underground vaults and trendy bars deep under the pavement. There is even a shoe shop in the underground Art Nouveau theatre. And from now on you can read about it and try it all out in CitySpotterGirl’s new book! The pocket guide “Der Untergrund von Wien” (“The Underground of Vienna”) is now available in bookshops and the webshop – and here you can already take a peek at it. Shop, eat, relax or have fun: everything is possible in the depths beneath our Vienna!

Wishing you an adventurous week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Remembrance at Baranka Park
For many centuries, the former Hellerwiese in Favoriten – today’s Belgradplatz with the Baranka Park – was a campsite and resting spot for different Roma and Sinti families dealing in carpets, textiles, and horses. Until 80 years ago. Because in autumn of 1941, all men, women, and children camping there were deported to concentration camps where most of them were killed. In remembrance of this, they play music today from 17:00 under the red chestnut tree – with Harri Stojka (after whose murdered grandmother the park was named), Tommy Hojsa and Aliosha Biz.

Legend Carriage
Yes, Vienna actually has a “Legend Carriage" now. And with it the legends of the city are told in an unusual way! In a horse-drawn carriage you roll through the alleys around the Ilgplatz and listen to the stories, brought to life by puppeteer Michaela Aigner. There are five puppets to choose from, each one representing a legend: The devil, who messes with the construction of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the basilisk, who sits in the fountain giving off a terrible smell, and of course death can’t be left out of the Viennese legends, either. The programme is designed for families, as suitable for adults as for younger people. Only with reservation!

Departure: corner of Venediger Au/Ausstellungsstraße, 1020 Vienna. 120 €. 3 July 14:00. Web

Floating Concerts at the Old Danube
Chugging along the Danube and letting yourself be swept away by the finest classical music à la Beethoven and Haydn at sunset, while indulging in delicious culinary delights. Sounds like a cheesy schmaltzy film? But it actually takes place on the beautiful Old Danube – on boat islands that look like water lilies from above and are built from recycled PET bottles. The string quartet “Vienna Strings” fiddles in the middle, the culinary treats come from Schinakl and Strandcafé and the wine list is opulent. This comes very close to a fancy summer holiday ;-D

Folksmilch at Spittelberg
There is probably no music genre that the trio of “Folksmilch” doesn’t have down pat: The crossover band can play stirring folk music as well as intense tango or pop songs for swinging and jazz. Their cover versions of classical and Austropop hits are quite cabaret like. Michael Jackson's “Billie Jean” sounds like tango, Mozart's piano piece “Alla Turca” becomes a groovy Balkan swing and the EAV hit “Fata Morgana” a bizarre operetta. Tonight the band will play their musical melange live at Spittelberg. Provides greats vibes, even to the furthest corner.

Ströck-Feierabend Bakery
How to battle food waste? Bakery Ströck has now managed an ingenious step towards sustainability. After months of development, you can now by “organic re-bread”. For that, they use one third of “organic rye-pur” bread from the previous day's overproduction, which decreases the amount of valuable food to be disposed of. The result is a particularly tasty bread that tastes fresh even after days. Jinco
Rarely have someone else’s childhood memories tasted so delicious to CitySpotterGirl. “Cong You”, a noodle dish from the streets of Shanghai, is soul food as it should be – unflashy but highly addictive. The look of the new restaurant Jinco is also unflashy – but the service is all the more appealing and the Shanghai cuisine is quite the revelation. The owner, a newcomer to the business, was missing the food of his childhood: they opened shortly before Corona, only to have to close immediately. Now the venue is booming – and rightfully so!
