"Heya Girls!"
Now that’s how we like it! For Women’s Day, Vienna is fully under petticoat government for once. With many offers from art to music. At the Leopold Museum, women have free admission to the current exhibitions on 8 March. There will also be a free guided tour of “Women's Power in Vienna around 1900” at 16:30. In the newly renovated State Hall of the National Library, “The visible and invisible women of the State Hall” will be brought before the curtain during free special tours. At the Globe, singer Virginia Ernst invites fellow musicians such as Erika Pluhar and Stella Jones on stage using the motto “Strong Voices, Strong Women”. And the Women's Walks present Marie Jahoda, Adelheid Popp and Edith Tudor-Hart – three completely different women who all had one thing in common: they were single mothers. All these events, however, do not hide the fact that equality between men and women is still far from being achieved. Which is why, for me, this week's motto is that of the incomparable Frida Kahlo: “Laughter has made us invincible, not as those who always win, but as those who never give up.”
Wishing you a solidary week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

“There's more to dance than red shoes”, goes the saying. At the brut dance festival there is ample proof of how true this is! For three weeks, creative choreographies and exciting performances by Austrian and international artists will once again be on show. For the opening, Annamaria Ajmone ventures into a nocturnal forest and deals with animals, plants and the relationship to the “Other”. And on Saturday, the Kiki House of Dive invites you to a Voguing Ball! Plus: studio visits, world premieres and parties.

Petersplatz1
As we all know, Thursday is little Friday and that's why it's gonna get groovy today! After the soul & funk singer Big John already made the Orient Occident shake with his live sessions, he has now taken up residence at the Werk-X. And one thing is clear: when the jamming master performs funky interpretations of Stevie Wonder, James Brown & co with his band “The Vienna Soul Society”, no one will keep sitting still! The special thing about the location is that theatre guests can also enjoy live music after the performance kind of like a nightcap and dance. By the way, tonight's opener is jazz singer Mel Verez!

Dance with friends
Friday evening, dinner plans are set, but afterwards? If the budding spring fever tempts you to the dance floor, you should try out the Cascade Bar at the Marriott Hotel. Starting today, “Dance with friends” invites you once a month to enjoy delicious cocktails, cosy chats and, of course, exuberant dancing. The sounds of singer Caroline Kreutzberger ensures cool moves, otherwise everything from boogie to salsa to pop is possible, because music requests are allowed! And if you're there as a group of girls, you can simply grab the professional “ taxi dancers” as dance partners!

Froehnert Open Souterrain
For 10 years they were a pilgrimage stop for vintage lovers. Now Ina and Petra are saying goodbye to their vintage design basement. To mark the occasion, they are holding another spectacular sale where beautiful items from the 1950s to the 1980s, such as small pieces of furniture, mirrors, lamps, clocks and (lily) porcelain, can be snatched up at bargain prices. From April on, the furniture lovers will only be in the store on Fridays and every first Saturday of the month until it is sold. But you can still buy the freaky-pretty specialties on Willhaben!

Oskar Haag
Some people simply got it – like Oskar Haag. Still green behind the ears, the Klagenfurt native was named the country's biggest pop talent after his act at the Vienna Popfest 2021. After that, things continued to climb steeply and at just 17 years old, his enchanting pop anthems like “Stargazing”, “ Black Dress” and “The Summer We Need” made it onto the playlists of various radio stations in Germany, the UK and the USA. Today, the songbird presents his latest album “Teenage Lullabies” on the stage of the Rabenhof Theater. And PS: He can dance too!

(dys-)funktionale Frau
Yes, the role of the “ housewife” is a topic in itself... In their exhibition, Doris Schamp and Luisa Hübner deal with the passive-aggressive breaking of gender stereotypes. Schamp stages the fragility of the construct “women's work”, for example, with a pastel wooden block tower that could collapse at any time, while Hübner's photo series “kitchen” depicts women's pointless occupation with kitchen utensils – humorously melancholic in a fitting 50s/60s aesthetic. By the way, at the vernissage the artists will be giving massages with household items and kitchen objects!

Pictorialism. Art Photography 1900
You would almost think you were looking at a painting. But what currently adorns the walls of the Albertina Modern are actually photographs. Shortly before 1900, the Pictorialist movement developed in Austria, whose main concern was to put photography and fine art on an equal footing. It was mainly wealthy amateurs, such as Heinrich Kühn, who maintained close ties to the avant-garde art scene of the Vienna Secession, who used elaborate printing techniques to bring this unique liaison of art and photography to paper. Fascinating!

Kiki Kogelnik: Now Is the Time
Playful, colourful and highly political – the Austrian artist redefined Pop Art. 180 of her works, from paintings to drawings and ceramics to installations, can now be seen in the largest retrospective to date at the Kunstforum. Kogelnik's dazzling life between Carinthia and New York and her friendships with Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol are clearly visible in the works of art: A multifaceted universe inhabited by ironic female figures and infused with abstract-graphic elements. Profound and happy-making!

Rise and Shine
Why do we almost always watch films in the evening only? The Gartenbaukino has asked itself the same question and launched a cinema series for early risers. So if you like a flickering screen in the morning, you can wake up today with the Oscar favourite “Tár” and Cate Blanchett's dramatic-musical interludes. And that's already at 6:30! Definitely a nice way to start the day before heading to work – or back to bed. The new early-morning film series takes place once a month and who knows, maybe 6:30 will soon be the new 20:15 ;-)

Tricky Women Festival
Once again, the Tricky Women Festival sweeps across the city. Europe's only film festival devoted exclusively to the animated work of women will have pixels, puppets and plasticine figures dancing across Viennese cinema screens from today. This year's programme includes 171 short films and the Austrian feature film premiere “My Love Affair With Marriage”. Self-reflective, feminist and with a lot of tongue-in-cheek about love, sex and gender roles. The festival starts with the dreamy 5-minute film “Frühzug”. If you are in the mood for daydreaming, you should plan a short holiday at the cinema.

Women's Day at Rathaus
Of course, the Viennese Rathaus will also be transformed into a ladies' zone on International Women's Day. After the women's survey 2022 “Wien, wie sie will”, our wishes have clearly emerged: We want more time, more space and more opportunities. That's why this year everything revolves around the topic of training and further education, for example with counselling on securing your livelihood and workshops on digital working. Guided tours (Lotte Tobisch) and a puzzle rally will keep you entertained, and at the end we will properly celebrate ourselves with pop tunes by Ina Regen!

Aponcho
As we all know, colourful is CitySpotterGirl's favourite colour! That's why she immediately noticed the new Aponcho store with its water-blue front, which matches the surfer's hut style inside perfectly. Owner Clarissa is very familiar with surfing and therefore also with the problems of putting on and taking off wetsuits at the beach – you need both hands and there are no changing rooms. The idea for Aponcho was born: hooded coats made of soft terry cloth that are wide enough to change into. The ponchos are available in all kinds of colour combinations and with matching pochettes. And non-surfers love the cosy piece as a bathrobe substitute!

Aspic
As simple as the restaurant with its brick walls and Ikea chairs may be, the dishes are surprisingly colourful. Not far from the Votivkirche, chef Borja and bar manager Manuel have opened a small fermentation mecca where the combinations of their cold and hot tapas are unpredictable: For example, “Pizelle” at first reminds you of langos, but with fermented tomatoes, salmon trout and salt lemon it becomes a light and airy little cloud. And with the “duck pasta” you have to restrain yourself from licking the jus off the plate. If there's room, be sure to also sit down at the bar, because the liqueurs, bases and even the tonic here are homemade!
