Stress reduction through mindfulness: MBSR
It’s not always easy to find time to de-stress your life when you are already so stressed out ;-) Tonight’s MBSR- info-evening would be a first small step in the right direction of relaxation. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program that was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and which has been scientifically researched with regard to stress-related illnesses – and it has been proven effective! During an 8-week course, stressed out people can learn the original method at the Shambhala: including meditations, self-reflections and also a whole day in silence.

Exciting news for art-lovers! Today, at the Leopold Museum, the new fair “Art Vienna” is opening its doors for the very first time and letting in contemporary art. The fair includes around 20 Viennese and a few international galleries with current art and works of classical modernism. Among others, there will be a Helnwein- Mickey Mouse, a Hrdlicka-bronze work, oil paintings from Rudolf Goessl and graphics from Georg Bernsteiner from Salzburg. Additionally, there is the pop-up exhibition “Parallel Recommendation” dedicated to the work of young Austrian artists.

Good news for friends of an animal-product-free life! The Veganmania will be taking place indoors for the first time: for three days there will be tasting, shopping and talking at the Stadthalle. The Vegan Association Austria will be informing about their work, but above all you can try and buy vegan delicacies from burritos to muffins while listening to DJ-sounds and live acts. In order to be able to toast with like-minded people, vegan wine is served. Also, the Erdbeerwoche will give advice on alternative monthly hygiene, there will be fashion, natural cosmetics and of course (even though it’s not summer yet), Veganista-ice cream!

Alma-Tadema: decadence & antiquity
The Dutch painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema was considered a superstar in Victorian age England. Alma-Tadema was extremely fascinated by the ancient times and that is why he brought everyday scenes from ancient Rome, Pompeji and ancient Egypt back to life and became one of the most successful artists of his time. His artistic influence can actually still be noticed in the present days, even big historic films like Ridley Scott’s “ Gladiator” follow the model of Alma-Tadema’s sensually decadent paintings. Many of his main pieces are part of the exhibition “Dekadenz & Antike” at the Lower Belvedere.

To tailor your own perfect pair of jeans so it fits like a glove is a pretty big project – at today’s jeans workshop you can find out how it’s done. Eight stations show you the individual work processes from fly to fell seam and afterwards you go home with a workbook plus a basic cut. Today, the long wait for the Oscar broadcast, due to the time difference, will be pleasantly shortened once again at the Gartenbaukino. To get in the mood for the live action starting at two in the morning, this year’s nominated films like “La La Land” or “Elle” will be shown on screen beginning at noon. In order to practice finger-crossing and cheering, so to speak. After midnight, the legendary Red Carpet Show starts, at 2:30 the award ceremony will be broadcasted live from LA and from 3:00 on there will be free coffee and breakfast in order to stay awake. Everybody who’s dressed up gets free champagne.

No, the cottage cinema at Gentzgasse (for those who can still remember it) unfortunately has not opened its doors again. Nevertheless, from now on the old “Wienerlied”-café Schmid Hansl will be functioning as a suburb-cinema: on Mondays you can see old films from all genres, part of it are cineaste-favorites and Austrian movies. Today, Peter Patzak’s “Kassbach” from the year 1979 is on the program – a devastating portrait of a Nazi and probably the strongest work of the Viennese director. The movie nights always start out with chosen short films. Awesome!

Feten Feten
Be it waltz, fandango, bolero or habanera - the Spanish music duo Feten Feten plays it all with mucho gusto! Jorge Arribas and Diego Galaz have captivated their audience permanently every single time during hundreds of concerts. By the way, the two musicians are not only lovers of dances but they also love unusual musical instruments - next to the accordion and the violin they also elicit very interesting sounds from the saw, the straw violin and the camping chair flute (!). Today, the fiery Spaniards are presenting their gripping performance in Austria for the first time. Listen in here!

“Die große Fleischwurst-Revue”
Funny and wonderfully colorful! In the tradition of the 1920s and 30s and in the unmistakable L.E.O.-style, different artists are presenting brilliant but weird segments of famous cabaret artists. Part of it are the Jewish comedian Armin Berg, Georg Kreisler or Hugo Wiener, and also legendary texts from Kurt Tucholsky. Additionally, treats of the Berlin Cabaret and from different Broadway musicals of this era are being served. All of it combined with virtuous operetta pieces, truly impressive opera singing and the opulence which is typical for the “Last Pleasant Opera-Theater” (“Letztes Erfreuliches Operntheater”).

Superheroines
Pop literary woman Barbi Markovic, who was born in Belgrade, caused quite the stir last year with her big city novel “Superheldinnen” (“superheroines”). And the stage version is a sight to see as well! In the center of the story are three typical big city ladies: they have an ambivalent relationship to nature, a sharpened sense for dog dirt and landed in Vienna after a few detours. In the city they meet for coffee every Saturday and decide on the use of their superpowers - the modern-day witches helpfully intervene in little people’s destinies with “flash” or “obliteration”. Awesome performance and full of surprises!

Sometimes it smells pungently like Little Trees, sometimes folk music is blaring from the speakers and sometimes you find yourself in the middle of a free “Cussing: Viennese-style” course – some taxis just make you wish to escape right away. So it’s awesome that Vienna now has a feel-good-taxi! It is driven by artist Alexander Stransky, who is promising his passengers meditative music, or, if requested, just silence or active listening, all the while it smells pleasantly like aroma-oils ranging from lavender to mint. It costs just as much as regular taxis, but be sure to order the super-chill minivan early enough!

Very interesting, how some things make their way to Vienna. Persian-born Azar Salek fell in love with Venetian Antica Murrina-jewelry made from hand blown Murano glass on Mykonos. When she came back home to Vienna, she found out that she could obtain the pieces only via Germany. And so she decided to open her very own shop. The store is an insiders’ tip even though it is located in the middle of the city: a huge selection of creative and elegant glass pearl-jewelry in many playful colors - and the earrings, bracelets and necklaces are not only eye-catchers but also very affordable. Block House at Naschmarkt
Vegetarians, this is not for you. Because at the newly opened Block House, it’s all about the steak. The former “Piccini” location next to the Naschmarkt was subjected to renovations for months – and on Monday it finally opened. The restaurant, which is part of a German chain, is famous for its tender pieces of meat, which are prepared on an especially for that purpose created lava stone grill. Accompanied by salad and baked potatoes with sour cream – the Mrs. Rumpsteak meal tastes exceptionally well. The only thing we don’t know, is why the Block House was given the atmosphere of a tasteful highway rest stop.
