Champagne and sausages for free
A huge snow globe now adorns the posh “Würstlstand” (sausage stand) at the Albertina for Christmas. The globe was put on the roof and is probably supposed to guide even more sausage fans the right way. In order to inaugurate the unusual decoration, owner Josef Bitzinger invites to ridge party today right there at the legendary sausage stand. But instead of beer, there will be chic Champagne drinking, accompanied by sausages for free. And afterwards you can walk off your stuffed stomach while strolling through the glittering city and catch the Christmas spirit ;-)

“Jungfrau und Reptil”
The CitySpotterGirl thought to know quite a bit about Doderer, but this part of his love life is unknown to her as well. The free-spirited Viennese writer Dorothea Zeemann, who was Heimito von Doderer’s late and secret lover, published her autobiographic book “Jungfrau und Reptil” (“Virgin and reptile”) at the beginning of the 1980s. In it she explicitly describes the erotic preferences of Doderer – and those were apparently mind-boggling for many of his admirers. Which resulted in a scandal. Actress Claudia Sabitzer is bringing the controversial love relationship back to life today at the Rote Bar.

Today at the super nice Markterei at the Old Post you can combine business with pleasure: first, purchase all the tasty treats, delicacies and (culinary) presents you still need and then it’s time for happy dancing. Because today DJ Mr. Vout will be providing happy lindy hop & swing sounds starting at 18:00. So, the only thing you still need is someone who watches over all your bags during the exuberant dancing. But there has got to be an angel or a willing Santa Clause around somewhere, right?

Panic shopping at violettsays
“Can someone please pass me the water?” yells a dress on the right in the back, in the other corner a scarf shouts defiantly: “I don’t want a dress. I want a pony!” Um, no, that is not the regular Christmas craziness, but the fine shop violettsays where fashion starts talking. There, beautiful skirts, brooches and bags (“I’m a little scared, I look so good right now”) are sewn and adorned with funny phrases. And whoever is still without presents can do something about that today at the traditional last minute Christmas salon: you can join panic shoppers, happy women and fearless men until 21:00.

Xmas-buffet Colombo Hoppers & Unkai
No carps, no roast and especially no cooking! In our multicultural city, also in a culinary sense, you can eat very anti-traditional and deliciously even on Christmas Eve. For example elegant and fine Japanese food at the upscale restaurant Unkai at the Grand Hotel, where a 5- to 6-course Christmas meal accompanied by wine is served. And of course a special Teppanyaki is on the menu as well. You can also enjoy the buffet at the Colombo Hoppers in a more laid-back and low-priced surrounding; there, the food is exotically spiced, from Sri Lanka and ranges from curry to mango mousse.
Unkai at the Grand Hotel, Kärntner Ring 9, 1010 Vienna. December 24 18:00. From 95 €. Web colombo hoppers, 1050 Vienna. 18:00. 22,90 €. Web

The Prater rocks!
The perfect event in order to get some fresh air and inhale some Christmas spirit right before Christmas Eve! On the glittering square at the Ferris Wheel at the Prater the annual winter market is happening and today there will be live “X-Mas-Soul” singing. Vienna-based Betty Semper will be singing the songs. She used to be part of Gloria Gaynor’s background choir with her smoky, breathy and wonderfully warm voice. And since she is performing in the afternoon you can join without missing the Christmas Eve celebrations. The tree should be up by now anyways ;-)

Curling at the Badeschiff
A good opportunity for some outdoor exercise: get together a group a friends, divide them into two teams and heat up your opponents on the ice while playing. Whoever gets their stone closest to the target, wins. At the end of each round, that experts know to call “end”, you count the points you made. The actual laws of the game can be outlined again during a hot drink right there and in case of doubts there is also Ice master Tom. Don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes and a warm jacket and definitely sign up. On the “mainland” there is also an ice track covered entirely by a roof.

Screwball-classics at the Filmmuseum
Soooo much better than most of the boring Christmas-TV-program: one Screwball-classic per day will be shown at the Filmmuseum between Christmas and New Year, with charming actress goddesses and trenchant Ping-Pong dialogues. Today, the film “The Philadelphia Story” will be shown on screen, an extraordinary battle of the sexes with Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and James Stewart. Following this film there will be movie gems like Carol Lombard in “Twentieth Century” or Clark Gable Cooper in a funny clash with Claudette Colbert in “It Happened One Night”. Delightful!

Famous residents of the Josefstadt
The Josefstadt is a particularly charming district. The architecture consists of a wonderful mix of baroque, Biedermeier and Gründerzeit, with nice neighborhoods and of course the Theater an der Josefstadt. So it’s no surprise that numerous artists, scientists and politicians lived and live there. Today during the Josefstadt-tour with Patrizia Kindl you can wander in the footsteps of famous residents ranging from Stefan Zweig to Klaus Maria Brandauer – also including interesting women like women’s rights activist Therese Schlesinger! – and learn how the lived and worked.

Just Taste popt!
Wine tasting instead of wine studying is the motto of the new wine merchant group “Just Taste”. It is also aimed at all of those people who just enjoy drinking wine without being one of the super-experts and (hobby-) sommeliers. The planned store at the Stubentor is still being renovated and until it is done you can taste many wines for free and, of course, also purchase them at the pop up in the 7th district. The wine-lovers mostly stock Austrian and German wines and next to the well-known brands they also have insider’s tips, scene wines and even ones from “Crazy Winemakers”.

Winter opening at the Lainzer Tiergarten
A long walk through the woods and meadows usually helps when your pretty head is spinning and your batteries are drained. So the “season start” of the Lainzer Tiergarten is happening at the right time – because the park just ended its hibernation together with its fallow deer and treetops and the doors are now open until January 8th! In between 2450 hectare of intact nature, fresh air-lovers and sports-fans can look forward to relaxation, fun and – with a little luck – a meet and greet with wild boars ;-) So, put on some clothes and enjoy nature close to the city. Because couch potatoes are a thing of the past, my friends!

New Year’s market Schönbrunn
Who didn’t make it to a Christmas market this year due to the stressful times? Don’t worry, you can make it up easily by visiting the New Year’s market. Because after the celebration is really before the celebration. Around 80 exhibitors are offering traditional arts and crafts and culinary delicacies in front of the Schönbrunn Palace – and of course also many nice and small good luck charms for 2017. The romantic atmosphere and the smell of freshly baked goods and hot Punsch in front of the backdrop of the Palace are a cost-free part of it too. And every day at 16:00 there is also a fine Jazz concert.

Pomp & Gloria
The life story of the owners is just as kitschy-beautiful as the store itself: originally Oskar and his boyfriend Christoph wanted to emigrate to an island and get married. They quit their jobs and started to clean out their house. Their stylish stuff became so popular online that they eventually decided to open their own store – in Vienna. An unbelievable, almost impossible to describe, 20 sqm wonderland, full to the brim with bibelots, awesomely bubbling bath bombs, romantic poetry albums and vintage rarities ranging from furniture to fashion. Dear heaven, how delightful!

Dolce Pensiero
And one more time: love really does lie at the base of the best stories! Williams, a pastry chef’s son from Varese in Lombardy was able to win the heart of the beautiful Emmanuelle from France with his sweet works of art – they married and opened a Pasticceria in Vienna. And now you can sit in the bright-lighted pastry shop, watch what’s baking in the open kitchen and eat “sweet thoughts”. Tiny fruit tarts, mini cream pastries, rum-soaked yeast dough creations, vanilla pastries – Williams combines traditional Italian recipes with new ideas. And that taste simply wonderful!
