"Heya Girls!"
Now, I'm a self-confessed gardening enthusiast, but it's only since the publication of our latest book, “Blütenrausch”, that I've realised how many people around the world are exploring the theme of flowers artistically. Munich-based photographer Natalie Strohmaier is a new discovery for me. She creates new fantasy flowers from a wide variety of flowers and plants and uses wire to give them a human pose. They pose for the camera like divas and princesses, using subtle humour to elicit a smile even on grumpy days (photo). Or Heather F. Wetzel from Ohio, who uses historic photographic processes to capture flowers and grasses directly on recycled can lids (!). Their work, along with that of five other artists, is currently on display at the Anzenberger Gallery in the Brotfabrik. “The Secret Service of Flowers” is a small exhibition, but one that will do you a world of good in times like these! Oh, and if you would like to browse through “Blütenrausch”, you can do so here!

Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

It's starting to smell a bit like spring out there! And it's not just your own home that's due for a spring cleaning – the Habari stores are also clearing out the winter. Good for us, because the designer beauties are leaving the ethno palace with a real discount party and so we can snuggle up in reduced blankets until the temperatures really warm up and think sunny thoughts with colourful ceramics from Cape Town and lots of unique pieces from Japan, Europe and Africa. You can get your money's worth in both the Habari Design Store and the Japan Design Corner, by the way!

 Grzegorz Siembida
Grzegorz Siembida
In some way, every work of art tells a story. Polish artist Grzegorz Siembida, however, takes the stylistic device of storytelling as the main theme of his colourful “Storyteller” series. The dreamy scenes seem to have come straight out of the comic book universe: Each canvas painting is broken down into sequences in which a different painting problem is highlighted – splatter marks, drawings hidden under watercolours, hasty scribbles or speech bubbles, for example. Abstraction paired with the inventive and humorous power of comic aesthetics – today is the vernissage!

Luziwuzi
The title alone makes you smile, and then Tom Neuwirth aka Conchita Wurst will make his theatre debut – which can only be entertaining! First the plot: this musical-theatrical happening is about the probably most eccentric member of the Habsburg dynasty. As Emperor Franz Joseph's brother, who liked to strut around in women's clothing and had no military or official duties, Archduke Ludwig Viktor, alias Luziwuzi, lived a life that wouldn’t have been possible for anyone else. Until scandals led to a fatal end. An evening between glamour and tragedy – premiering tonight!

Immediately after the grand opening party, the next feast for the ears will take place in the event hotspot NordbahnSaal: with harp, ukulele and three voices, Bernhard Scheiblauer, Sarah Metzler and Sigrid Horn set the heritage of their Mostviertel childhood to music. Their polyphonic dialect chansons, they combine the lightness of Butterbrot and “Apfelspeidl” with the cosiness of holidays spent in the pub. Today the trio presents their new album “Urlaub in Sepia” – lyrical sound painting, immersed in the jewel colour of memory.

 Komödie am Kai
Alles für Mama
A truly criminal attack on the laugh muscles can be experienced today! In Stefan Vögel's crook comedy, the three endearingly chaotic brothers kidnap the rich Konstanze Papenburg in order to extort money. The mother of the three penniless young men had worked in Mrs Papenburg's company for 40 years before she was dismissed using legal tricks. The three men violently risk everything for mum, but Konstanze not only proves to be an extremely resilient hostage, her son Christian also makes no effort to pay any money for his “old lady”!

VinziPasta
Who hasn’t been there: craving dolce vita, but the choice on the pasta shelf is simply overwhelming? Well, now you just have to keep your eyes open for magenta! That's the colour of the new VinziPasta packaging. The pasta has been handmade by Roma women in Slovakia since 2007, using a traditional recipe. The packs are sold for €2.49 and at least 50 percent of the proceeds go to the women. For them, it is the only way to feed their families without begging. The “edible donation” is available in the Vienna VinziShops in Ottakring and Erdberg!

Manjana
Rhapsodic cloud banks and feather-light melancholy, globetrotting and dialect, analogue emotional outbursts and a good serving of groove – that's Manjana! The five-piece group started out as a string duo, with Manfred Plessl on violin and Jana Thomaschütz on cello. Today, percussion, guitar and bass form a colourful bouquet of jazz, Austrian folklore, Indian classical music, African and Balkan music. This is also due to the many ethnic influences of the musicians, who themselves do not know exactly which genre they belong to. Today they will present their debut album!

An die Freude
Beethoven was already almost deaf when he premiered his sensational symphony, including the 4th movement “To Joy”. As the symphony celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, the Japanese choir White Hands performs excerpts from the ode in Vienna. What's special about it: The choir includes deaf members! Photographer Mariko Tagashira has been accompanying the White Hands for years, using long exposures to capture the children's singing in sign language as poetic traces of light. Together with sound installations and tactile images, her works are now exhibited. Free entry!

Twist!
Everything is turning and moving in media, fashion and music. Lifestylers of the 50s and 60s learned what was trendy from magazines. The story of Twist! is set in the glamorous world of one of these magazines. Not only is it a popular dance style at the time, but it is also the title of a magazine in which the editor-in-chief is embroiled in a constant battle with her ex-husband, the publishing director, who wants to close down the dance magazine. To save the magazine, one editor enters a competition, but the budding dancing star has not reckoned with his dance partner...

Eve's courage
It doesn't always have to be Adam. Eve was allowed to create music too! Two of her descendants have the courage to tell us about it: Sophie Heinrich and Maria Radutu are not only masters of the violin and piano, but also gifted storytellers. While Maria takes the audience on a journey through various musical styles, Sophie uses stories to transport them into the emotional worlds of the female composers they present today – such as the Boulanger sisters or Florence Price – and make their works more accessible. Female power for the ears, basically!

Das Tho
Fine bakeries specialising in sourdough bread are springing up like mushrooms these days. Particularly charming: the Tho, where newcomer Paul makes delicious breads and a baguette called Willi from regional flours. In addition to the sourdough bread, there is a small selection of cheese, wine and specialities such as the delicious tinned fish from “von alpen”. And you can also eat here: At the large, old wooden table, you can treat yourself to a baguette (with camembert, plums and purslane, for example) or devour a sandwich. The beauty of simple things!
