"Heya Girls!"
Next week will see Vienna become the centre of the world! Yes, really ;-) At least as far as female filmmaking goes. The FrauenFilmTage bring 24 new international feature films and documentaries to town – shot by renowned women filmmakers from all over the world. Which means: love, lust and relationships are on the agenda just as well as the fight against patriarchy and the reappraisal of dark secrets. It’s being kicked off by the multi award-winning epic “The third wife” from Vietnam, whose breathtaking landscape shots create their very own magic. The special of this year’s FrauenFilmTage is dedicated to the great Margarethe von Trotta. Not only are many of the films by her (like “Rosa Luxemburg” in the picture), she will also be present personally from 1-3 March. Conclusion: women are strong, funny, brutal, charming – and yes, sometimes fickle, too!
Wishing you a varied week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Klimt Paintings at Uni Vienna
A story rich in scandals: in 1894, Gustav Klimt was commissioned by the university to produce oil paintings for the Ceremonial Hall. Countless protests over the depiction of nude bodies followed, Klimt resigned from the commission in 1905, the pictures were destroyed in a fire set by SS-troops in 1945. Now the Ceremonial Hall was restored for remarkable 1.5 million € – during which reproductions of Klimt’s 3 paintings were inserted into the historical ceiling of the ceremonial room. Today, you can admire the magnificent hall during a free special tour – Klimt included!
Meeting point: concierge, assembly hall of the university’s main building, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Vienna. 28 February. 16:00. Free entry. Sign up! Web

Fun dance event for all who are too shy for today’s Rosenball and too shabby for today’s Opernball ;-) Ball host Fräulein Stulle, ribbon gymnastics Olympic champion from the GDR (grin!) and probably known to fans of the once legendary and super strange H.A.P.P.Y clubbings, organises an alternative dance at the underground passage at Karlsplatz. There they put on neat good-mood-music and the dress-code is “beige, beige, and some more beige”. The entry is free for all colourless ball-Cinderellas, the most popular wallflower will be rewarded with a tasty gift basket.

Sellerie meets Seiferei
Good taste encounters good scent: charming Sellerie, known for her stylish paper- and home accessories, will present two own room perfumes today. They were developed together with Seiferei from the Lower Austrian Arbesthal, with natural essential oils and without artificial preservatives. “Villa Waldruh” full of cypress, lavender, and cedar wood makes you hear water gurgling and birds chirping in your mind, while “Naschmarkt” brings animating spices into the room with coriander and nutmeg. Try-out sniffing and Kalê drinks today at Sellerie!

Rrriot Festival
Young, feminist, and mostly free: the Rrriot Festival is whirling around town with 70 events from today. The geographical focus is on Brigittenau, content-wise it’s about female empowerments and social issues. That is how tough Roller Derby players and male cheerleaders meet pensioners during “house calls”, the young Volkstheater hosts a “market place of skills” together with local residents, and Stefanie Sargnagel focuses on Christine Nöstlinger. Plus: workshops from DJing and KräuterHacks to self-empowerment through doing theatre. Cool!

A wonderfully wicked Kasperl theatre for adults only! Following the style of old murder ballads and Nestroy’s boulevard comedies, the Original Viennese Kasperl satirises the political situation. And according to an old custom, the plot is being commented on with couplets in between scenes to bring the point across. And they revive another tradition of the Viennese inn- and cellar boulevard: when a scene is particularly pleasing to the audience, they can just yell “once more!”. So it’s entirely possible that the Chancellor may get whipped with a slapstick repeatedly ;-)

Dans.Kias: Da-nach
A dark theme, terrifically performed: in her new play, choreographer Saskia Hölbling lets her Dans.Kias-ensemble act in a world that has fallen apart. A group of people find themselves somewhere on one of the world’s oceans – between flotsam and debris of a time gone by. It is unclear what happened and it doesn’t really matter. In any case, they have been catapulted from a world of abundance and constant interconnectedness and it’s now up to the group to reinvent themselves. Or not. A captivating dance into the unknown!

In 2015 at the Accordion Festival, the Belgian duo Kathy Adam and Didier Laloy wowed the audience in Vienna. Back then, their playing was described as a mixture of “chamber music-like rigour and instrumentally virtuosic witty playfulness” (Ö1). This year’s festival brings the brilliantly playing cello & accordion duo back to the city again. For several years now the exceptional artists have been touring together as “Belem”, indulging in their love for chamber music and all dance-related things, quite infectious to listen to! The Happiness Machine
How happy are we with our economic system? Ten film artists and ten composers (women only!) from eleven European countries will deal with the topic “public interest” today at Konzerthaus. As basis for this serves the alternative economic model by Christian Felber, which is built on values like empathy, trust, solidarity, and sharing. The Klangforum will play works by Hanna Hartmann or electro-pioneer Electric Indigo, and in addition to that, they show a number of different animated short films. A three-hour long, loud and refreshing reflection about the way we want to live!

Eligius Award 2019. Jewellery in Austria
There’s an award for modern jewellery design in Austria: the Eligius Award. It’s offered every year in Salzburg. At MAK, you can now admire some of the submitted works in advance. 13 jewellery artists have experimented with different materials from fish bones to Japanese paper, thought in completely new categories and got inspired by personal experiences or past epochs. Pretty cool! In order for you to imagine what the unconventional creations actually look like while being worn by people, the jewellery is also shown on photographs.

Angelika Hager “Kerls”
A safari through the male psyche that certainly won’t leave one dry eye! For Angelika Hager aka Kurier columnist Polly Adler has extensively studied the lords of creation and for her new book “Kerls!” she also spoke with men’s studies experts, perpetrators of domestic violence, psychiatrists, bobo dads, precarious right-wing voters, narcissism researchers, and unemployed people. The result is a fantastically funny but also thoughtful and informative book that’s more travel guide than guidebook. And seeing sharp-tongued Angelika Hager live is quite a show anyway!

Swappping Room
You can now exchange items at a place where things are usually stored! The MyPlace selfstorage in Favoriten is converting one of its units into a swapping room. The motto is exchanging instead of throwing away, the rules are easily explained: everyone can swap up to five items, the things that are brought must be in good condition and in working order. Foodstuff, medicines, or underwear must not be swapped, nor anything that is not allowed to be stored in the SelfStorage. In short: the articles of exchange should not go against common sense ;-)

Herring Feast all’Istriano
It’s Ash Wednesday, but CitySpotterGirl is really not a fan of the usual herring feast. But very much one of fine fish like you can get at Yppenmarkt: for the “La Salvia”, the wonderful gourmet store with bistro, brings the ocean to the counter. Until Friday, you can feast on branzino carpaccio, polipo all istriano with olives, celery and olive oil, tagliolini al nero di seppia with mussels and calamari here – and especially baccalá mantecato. The stockfish puree is a special classic from the bars of Venice and tastes best on crostini!

Vintage for the courageous! It is almost impossible to find something here that isn’t all shrill colours and doesn’t leap at you with wild patterns. And that’s the whole point of the exercise: The new second-hand store of stylist Wolfgang Lindenhofer and actor Michael Pascher is in the hands of two people who have a way with extravagant pieces from the 1980s onwards. If you have guts, you will definitely find something here. Be it a golden lurex frilly blouse by Adlmüller, colourfully-shrill velvet trousers by Versace or a garish Moschino jacket. The knitted jumpers are wonderfully ugly as well. Hip!

Grey, rosé and orange are simply a good combination. It makes the Plain look really good since here it’s not only the furniture playing with these hip colours, but also the mural covering most of the wall. This restaurant belonging to national football-team player Rubin Okotie and his wife, who are both vegans, serves healthy and fast cuisine. Particularly bowls, organic bagels and porridge, sometimes with organic fish or organic meat. Breakfast (which also includes many bowls) is served until 15:00, and you can get everything as takeaway – in packaging that’s 100% recyclable, obviously. Nice!
