"Heya Girls!"
“I never have taken a picture I've intended”, is a famous quote from the famous photographer Diane Arbus from New York, “they're always better or worse.” It is sometimes good to know that even a professional photographer feels that way – because we were all probably feeling this way at the moments when we took the billions of vacation snaps during this summer. The two most important exhibitions this week show us pictures that are better than intended. The gallery Westlicht displays the best 200 press photos from the last year. This year the competition received 98,671 entries. Prizes were awarded to 53 photographers from 25 countries. It is not only an impressive demonstration of achievements in international photo-journalism but also a unique retrospective of events from the year 2013. A bit different are the pictures in the Anzenberger Gallery: the exhibition “Handmade” shows pictures that are much more than just pictures taken in the conventional photography. Sissi Farassat uses, for example Swarovski Crystals on pictures, Diane Meyer stitches on photos of the Berlin Wall and Heather Wetzel develops pictures on the lid of a can. And how are we going to develop our vacation snaps?

Wishing You a Lovely Week

Sternentau Pop Up Store
This name sounds so poetical! The young Viennese designer Anja Zajac produces bags from the craziest materials under the “Sternentau” label (star's dew). And she does this with a portion of joy and love. Some of the bags are cosy (with artificial fur or plush), others are made from neoprene, and there is also a feather clutch or just simple bags made from old clothes. All this under the motto “Cheeky design and wild patterns”. Feel free to rummage in Anja's unique bags Pop Up Store up to Sunday. If you don’t find any funky accessory for the upcoming grey season, you only have yourself to blame ;-)

Passages in the Schottenviertel
It is a must-see for the city spotter girls and for all the Vienna–infatuated discoverers! Even if you are an insider you’ll find secret routes in this guided walk, that are not to be found on any city map. The troop explores the entwined ways through Viennese “passage-houses”, starting through the Schottenviertel, along the Freyung and then to the Mölker Bastei. Passage-houses are an authorized trespassing passage through a private house. Across hidden paths and unexpected backdoors the tour will lead you to palaces in baroque style, discreet monasteries and deserted inner courtyards.

Meeting point: Universitätsring, 1010 Wien. 4.9. at 10:00. 15€. Web

POP it UP vienna in Mariahilf
Strolling around, gossiping, shopping, tasting. Today virtually the whole neighborhood becomes a Pop Up Store. Four shops situated around Esterhazygasse came together to form a platform on which young unknown creative artists could present their products. What is there to see? Jewelry made using 3D printing by NANAdesign, bicycles, T- Shirts and bags made using cat hair, self dyed cotton fashion under the label Bliitch and gigantic letters from Carissimo Letterpress. And if you feel hungry on this tour in the hood, you will find organic and vegan gourmet food in the “home made” in Mollardgasse.

Buskers Festival
Fire-breathers and jongleurs, graffiti artist and gleeman, 100 national and international artists spread the magic upon Karlsplatz. Three days in a row they show what they’ve got and what they can at the Vienna’s street art festival, well known as Buskers Festival. It is acrobatic, fun and for free – the festival itself and all the offered workshops are without charge. The after party at the TU (Vienna’s Technical University) is not for free, but surely lovely and worth seeing and hearing. Street art and cool beats form a magical and fascinating total work of art.

Courtyard parties Adamah + Haschahof
The weather went a little crazy this summer. Nevertheless, a good reason to celebrate a great harvest festival can be found at Adamah Biohof. It is the right place for organic food fans, where you can nibble happy vegetables or buy them on the market stall. Afterwards, you can enjoy the round trip and the concerts on the field. Really nice: the jazz brunch on Sunday. And if you don’t feel like having a run in the country, you can still celebrate with Vienna’s organic farmers: they sound the bell for the autumn at the Haschahof. With music, freshly braised dishes and a pleasant view of wide fields.

Atafu 1863
Today in the Donaupark, it is everything about the small tropical coral atoll Atafu, which is a part of the archipelago Tokelau. Atafu was assaulted on 16. February 1863 by Peruvian slave traders. On this day, each and every single man from the working population disappeared from the island. The stage director Gianfranco Licandro, who lives in Vienna, could never forget this story, so he converted it into a music theatre. The music comes from Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Schuman, and is performed as an open air play: Today by the Irissee, on the Donauparkbühne (stage), tomorrow in the park Schloss Laxenburg.

Franziskus Kirtag
This tip is written here only because, as a country-bred person, I am so wild about “Kirtage” (Kermesse). One festival of this kind takes place on Sunday in the inner courtyard of the Franciscan monastery in the first district: the so called “Franziskus- Kirtag”. Bakers, confectioners and butchers from Vienna provide the best tasty tidbits for the visitors. You can find sausages, pastries and different sweet temptations. The total net income of this festival is used for the daily meals for the needy and indigent people coming daily to this Franciscan monastery. If the weather is bad, the festival will take place at the refectory.

Yummy market in Stadtbiotop
It surely has the potential to become the new hotspot in Vienna the next year: the new Stadtbiotop! The temporary village made of container boxes wants to become an urban market place (for fashion, design, art and new ideas) and a creative space in the second district. This completely new kind of market opens this weekend. From Friday to Sunday you can buy here yummy products from the best Austrian food production companies. The products they offer are organic, fresh, sustainable and made with love. And from tomorrow on there will be one more Pop Up Store (just take a look at our tips for Monday).

Hur und Moll
Some might think it is only an urban legend, but the so called “Spittelberglieder”, songs from the famous red light district from the 18 century are a reality. Their language is extreme, but if you listen close enough, you will find a piece of social history between the lines. These social facts go deeper under the skin, than the vulgarism found in the lyrics could have ever gone. The actor and musician Stephan Paryla portrays in his songs a dark and opaque “genre painting” of Vienna. Attention! Not suitable for people under the age of 18.

 Ricardo Pozos
Ricardo Pozos
Bold color and odd characters: Ricardo Pozos is part of the Mexican art scene that is not necessarily affiliated with any common sense in its concept of art, but instead goes refreshingly independent ways. You can gaze at Pozos' paintings and admire them today in the Lateinamerika-Institut. He is famous for his animal forms and his surreal dreamworld. A cricket on an unicycle standing in the rain, one jackal surrounded by mice or a dog in nurse uniform. Typical Mexican nibbling is served at the opening event.

Sarahs Kochbuch für das ganze Jahr
This book will probably be a bestseller! And while everybody talks about Superfood & Co, Sarah Wiener focuses on the essential basics of a healthy cuisine: seasonal ingredients. She introduces in her book over 90 innovative recipes, gives us tips (also what could we do with the food residuals), and she reminds us about groceries that we don’t usually use anymore (like the common chickweed for example). The master chef personally presents her book today in the bookstore Thalia on the Mariahilfer Straße.

Stretch out in the city park
It's the early bird that catches the worm. While the first sunshine glimmeres upon the Johann Strauss monument we start the day with Marion Wandl being sporty. We stretch out near to the Strauss monument, powerful but calm and relaxing. There are two courses to choose: For the most vehement early birds the start is at 7 am. The longsleepers should be in the park by 8 at the most. We guarantee you won’t find any Japanese tourists with a camera at that hour. ;-) This “morning-doping”, by the way is being organized every Tuesday up to 16 September. Only if the weather is nice, of course!

Self Portrait 2014
And once again this week we are talking (almost) only about photos. Our talking point this time is anyway already in everyone’s mouth: the selfie. This tsunami-like megatrend of self portrayal has actually quite “serious” roots: the artistic self portrait, after all one of the most important realms in the history of art. More than 30 young artists display themselves as a subject for a photograph in the new exhibition “Selbstportrait 2014”. The opening event is today, needless to say there is free entry.
