Maria Hahnenkamp
The distorted and often sexist depiction of the female body in the media is a topic that drives us women crazy time and time again. That’s why the Viennese photographer Maria Hahnenkamp’s approach to the issue is good and important. In her work she makes us take a look beneath the “beautiful” picture surface. She tries to express the unseen or unthought-of, indicating the invisible power of the media. In order to visualize how razor-thin the illusion of an image is, she changes the surface of her photographs through sanding, embroidering or sewing. Today is the opening!

A piece of paradise
Be it Xunder Xandl, Gurkenprinz or the winegrower Thom Wachter – they all live and work in a little part of paradise in the Southern Burgenland. Today they are bringing their delicacies to Vienna, to the wine and general store Burgenländer in the Second district and you can taste anything you want and also talk to the producers. There will be venison specialties and delicious meat from the “Zickentaler Moorochse”, a choice of select wines from different wineries, Old Raven whisky and Beer from the brewery Rabenbräu. And the family business Bischof will bring their noodles. Sounds tasty!

Concrete
So much for grey and depressing! Concrete is considered progressive; in the 50s and 60s the building material even stood for change in society. Numerous social housing projects, educational institutions or cultural centers were built with concrete. By now a lot of what was concreted into the landscape back then is facing demolition and some projects are seen as failures. In the new exhibition at the Kunsthalle numerous artists are dedicating their work to the historically charged building material. You can see brutalist constructions by Paul Rudolph and also sculptures and other installations. Opening is today!

Harvest in the city
Today a free bus tour grants interesting insights into the Urban Gardening movement in Simmering. First you visit the beautiful organic fig farm where rare herbs and vegetables are grown as well. Next stop is the neighborhood garden center Jakubek – and afterwards you visit a wild part of the city that hardly anybody knows: the Macondo-village has been home to refugees since the 1970s and there they also grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. Just how awesome jams and preserves from solidary farming actually taste can be discovered at the Jölhof’s tasting today at the Naschmarkt!

A fashion show in a hip environment: tonight the young street wear label vis a vis invites you to the super pleasant Café Z. There you can relax with a drink in hand on one of the flea market furniture pieces from the former pastry shop and watch the current collections Streetchic and S 16 file past. The just 22-year-old designer Andrea Kerber launched her label in April of this year and she designs and sews all pieces herself. Usually she likes to use natural materials in white, grey or black for her laid-back classy pieces, but the new collection includes a dose of turquoise. Cool!

Disco Soup
What a waste: one third of all perfectly good foods are being thrown away! Today at the Viennese Disco Soup you can cook against the unnecessary trashing of groceries. The ingredients come from the association foodsharing, which saves food that is still good to eat from being thrown out. The salvaged groceries will be prepared together and of course also eaten together. So, pack your vegetable knife and join the chopping disco. If you want to find out more about the issue of waste and how to avoid it: the Zero Waste Lab will host events and workshops all throughout the summer.

Vienna Nightrow
A tip for all friends of the Old Danube: today it will be illuminated by floodlights and become the setting for the Vienna Nightrow races. Almost 50 eight crews will compete in different races, which you can watch from the sun terrace or the public gallery. For the hungry there will be a barbecue and champagne on ice will be ready to celebrate the winners. You are not familiar with the rulebook of rowing? Don’t worry, the race commentator will provide the necessary insight at this crazy event. And let me put it this way – there will also be eye candy, because a well-trained rower is definitely a sight to see ;-)

Bhoj-feast
Do any of you have something to celebrate? Not that it’s necessary in order to attend this epicurean event, but it would be a perfect fit. Every family celebration, every business deal and every communal ritual in Nepal is celebrated with a great feast. Such a Bhoj involves cooking for days beforehand in order to feed all friends and relatives. Today at the “Yak + Yeti” Bhoj is being celebrated; all the guests will be seated in a row on pillows on the floor and treated to culinary delicacies from the Nepalese kitchen. An Evening Celebrating Barbra Streisand

And she has a huge fan: tonight the young musical actress Nina Monschein is dedicating a whole concert to the legendary diva. Additionally to hits like “ Funny Girl” or “The Way We Were”, Monschein will be telling anecdotes and stories (in English) of the live of the now 74-year old star and singing about Streisand’s extraordinary career – from a shy, Jewish girl to a world star. Shakespeare And The Garden
To bloom or not to bloom! That is the main question today during a very unique Shakespeare-themed guided tour through the Botanical Garden. Around 120 different types of plants are mentioned in Shakespeare’s work – the “Fairy Hill” in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with its sweet honeysuckle, the violets and the wild thyme has basically become a thing. During the tour of the current outdoor exhibition “Shakespeare and the garden” visitors can learn about selected plants. The walk through the summery evening garden is complemented by artistic performances.

Thonet Pop-up-Café
Drinking coffee in style and checking out stylish furniture at the same time can be done from today on at the Old Post. The traditional company Thonet set up a temporary showroom in the impressing premises. Presented are bentwood classics like the world-renowned Viennese coffeehouse chair, but also steel pipe furniture from the Bauhaus period and current designs ranging from living to office furniture. Visitors can also sit down on the designer furniture in the foyer and the courtyard and enjoy some caffeine and snacks from Jonas Reindl. And all that is available for exactly one year!

Forget the UNO-City, because the most international part of Vienna is the wonderful supermarket “Prosi”. The huge iconic store sells groceries and cosmetics from everywhere in the world. And starting this week there is also – right next door – a proper restaurant! Simple and fast is the way it works here, because you have to get your own food at the counter. Emphasis is put on south Indian food, but time and time again there will be spicy-fresh specialties from over 50 different countries: for example chicken curry, Matar Paneer, Biryani and the “Prosi King Thali” which includes 5 different kinds of curry.
