"Heya Girls!"
Dear heaven, it’s been so long! A red-haired “bad girl” proved that pop music and feminism go together perfectly. And then afterwards there was a chubby Madonna who wasn’t a very good singer but incredibly ambitious. And she made Cindy Lauper basically disappear into thin air. Apparently in the 1980s the pop business could only have one queen. Now, a few hundred years later, Madonna is still busy as ever with looking young. And Cindy Lauper has discovered the blues. In her album “Memphis Blues” the wild child interprets twelve songs from the somber regions of the mind with gusto and in 2011 she gave a captivating concert at the State Opera. And that is where she will perform again – to the delight of your CitySpotterGirl – this Sunday, as one of the star performances of the Jazz Festival Vienna! And for all those of you who are too young to know what I’m talking about: Cyndi is still an icon for all the girls with a rebellious streak. And “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” will always be our anthem ;-)

Wishing you a soulful week

SUP Yoga at the Old Danube
Super relaxing evening workout on the water! During SUP Yoga the yoga mat is exchanged for a paddleboard and you exercise on the water – every Thursday at the Gänsehäufel as long as the weather is dry. After a short introduction ashore you dock the SUP boards onto a yoga island, in order to practice yoga accompanied by softly swaying wave-movements and quiet water splashing. And that is not only a challenge but also quite fun! To hold your balance on the board is not always easy, but the wobbling is good for strengthening your core and flexibility ;-)

Kino unter Sternen
Starting today the Karlsplatz is buzzing again: with Mack the Knife, Lampedusa during the winter, Lovely Rita’s teenage tragedy, Russian call girls and Gloria Swanson as a has-been film diva. The Karlsplatz once again turns into the venue for “Kino unter Sternen”. And that means: for three weeks there will be free movie nights in front of the Karlskirche. It starts today with a preview: “Un solo colore”, which won’t premiere in the cinema until this fall, tells the story of a tiny Italian village that sees the reception of migrants as a great opportunity. Plus: talks, bar and organic food from Rita bringt’s. That’s summer in the city!

Cooking at Hermanngasse
One street, ten hobby-chef teams, two meals made from the same ingredients and a big jury of non-professionals – that is the concept of the first big cook-off in the seventh district. The hungry drop-in customers get a tasting-pass, silverware and a napkin and then they can go on to try and rate all the creations by the competitors around the area of the Hermanngasse/Westbahnstraße. The competing teams are very diverse – including stores like Franke Leuchten or the optician Sehprojekt and also representatives of the embassy of Indonesia. We’ll see who wins!

Today the probably most famous brothers from West Africa are performing in Vienna for the first time! Abdulaye and Mobido Diabate grew up in a griot family and with their unison singing they create a fascination that holds the audience captivated. Additionally there are two balaphones, a big African rhythm group – and two prominent names from the Austrian saxophone scene, mixing the African sounds with a good portion of jazz. Kafka’s paths
“Up the stony street, back through the alley in the evening sun”. Right around his 37th birthday in the year 1920 Frank Kafka visited Milena Jesenská in Vienna. Three weeks before that they started an intensive exchange of letters and in the days of the visit in Vienna they went on a hike through the Vienna Woods. Today, on Kafka’s 133rd birthday the route can be rediscovered in the form of a literary walking tour – from Neuwaldegg to the house at Roan, then to the Hameau hill and back around passing by the Schwarzenbergpark. Charlotte Spitzer and Manfred Müller lead the walking tour, tell stories and read from Kafka’s letters to Milena.

We all learned how to swim at one point in our lives. Breaststroke swimming, to be exact. Even though your CitySpotterGirl has stopped doing the breath-release into the water thing by now and prefers to swim wearing sun glasses ;-) But to do the crawl? Only very few know how to glide through the water looking sporty with the correct breathing rhythm and without swimming lopsided. That is why we have a tip for all the ambitious water lovers out there, who would like to learn the elegant technique this summer: a two week crawl crash course that will teach you the economical crawl in a (supposedly!) playful manner.

Zelko Wiener: Between 0 and 1
You will experience a little Matrix feeling today at the opening of the big show by Zelko Wiener at the Musa. With huge computer prints of video stills or digital photographs the binary world of 0 and 1 is all the sudden very real for the audience. The Austrian artist and pioneer of Internet art who died in the year 2006, created digital, virtual but also plastic pieces for 30 years. His work has impressed the audiences at the Biennale in Venice or the Ars Electronica – both because of his versatility and also his sharp analysis of gender roles and the depiction of the current communication culture.

Cabaret goes Impromptu Celebrity Special
It is always particularly funny and pleasant when the comedians themselves start laughing out loud. And that will definitely be the case today, when six big names like Eva Marold, Monica Weinzettl and Herbert Steinböck perform a play from the impromptu repertoire of the Tschauner stage under the direction of Gerold Rudle. There, nothing is set in stone, as always everything is completely improvised. And that is just as surprising and funny for the actors and actresses as it is for the audience. The play will include the typical characters from the grumpy big farmer to the dull farmhand and the rich great aunt. Hilarious!

It’s been a while since so much was written about an opening before it actually took place as in Josef Lingenhel’s case. And now it’s finally open and at the counter of the super-chic city cheese dairy, which is also a deli and (soon) a restaurant curious gourmets are gathering. And they definitely get their money’s worth: the fresh cheese really is fresh, because the master Robert Paget made it himself in the in-house cheese dairy. Next to the fresh cheese you can find very long matured Swiss Gruyère, Cinta Senese ham from wild pigs, the finest organic pastrami, salumi and delicacies from the best manufacturers in Europe. Waldemar Tagesbar
Cool, so cool! The hippest restaurant in Hietzing opened last week at Altgasse, which is now definitely the trendiest part of the district. The “Waldemar Tagesbar” (just the name makes you smile) turns out to be an airy, light-flooded loft – furnished in a reserved Scandinavian style with blond wood, cast floor and prominent concrete pillars that serve as huge vases for tree branches. If possible you should arrive before 14:00 because the breakfast plays a big role: inspired by Soho, Tel Aviv, Paris and Hietzing. Apart from that you can enjoy deliciously filled sandwiches and currys at noon. Like I said: cool, so cool!
