"Heya Girls!"
Dear green fingers and garden hedonists, in April and May, rare lion’s tongues, attractive Hannibal leek, curious Neckarpearl cauliflower and the one or other bee are once again settling down in the middle of Vienna! The initiator of the fresh breeze of country air is the world beautifier organization Arche Noah from Schiltern that has been spreading rare crop plants and the necessary know-how for years. As of now, you can purchase many interesting young vegetable plants, fresh herbs, delicious berry rarities and selected organic seeds –at the Arche Noah pop up store in the 5th district. Books on the topic, soil and organic fertilizer are part of the selection as well. Which means you need to clean window sills, roof gardens and gardening beds now and make room for all the botanic treats. Talking about vegetables: the wonderful gardening farm Ochsenherz still has space available! In terms of agriculture run by a community, you can buy part of the harvest, therefore securing the farm’s existence and also getting a box full of fresh vegetables every week. Needs to be supported!

Wishing you a green week

MQ Amore
A big secret, almost as well guarded as Camilla and Prince Charles, who are residing in the city right now ;-) The talk is of the new sculpture park “MQ Amore” in front of the MuseumsQuartier, which will finally be revealed after a two-year-long break in the planning phase and secretive working behind high fences. Anyways, they did not put up a red carpet there, but green artificial grass and from now on you get to experience art there – including the Riviera-feeling and a minigolf course. At the opening today the swingingly-funny “Edgar Tones and The Su’sis” will be playing a concert. Cheeky Chick!

Danse de Nuit
An outside location, close to the streets and lights of the city, six dancers and minimal equipment: the choreographer Boris Charmatz creates art using the intensity of urban dancing and breaks all conventions at the same time. Between protest and funeral march, wild remix and fleeting dance, language and movement come together to from a breathtaking dance, in which the bodies touch without any restraint. Like an unfinished graffiti on the wall, as a message that echos through the night. To be experienced tonight at the Resselpark at Karlsplatz. The performance will be happening regardless of the weather!

Renée Schröder
Food for the brain! Today at her reading, Renée Schröder – the CitySpotterGirl’s very favorite scientist! – will be examining the question of how and if humankind will be able to outwit evolution. Her proposition: we cannot wait for evolution to take care of the survival of humankind. If we want to survive, we have to start acting ourselves. In her book “The invention of humankind”, which won the Science Book Prize 2017, Renée Schröder takes a look at the short period that humans have lived for until now, takes a detour into genetics and calls for a new era of enlightenment.

Vintage furniture market
The crowd last year was intense. And the Hotel am Brillantengrund will probably be bursting at the seams once again this year. The beautiful Biedermeier house in the seventh district is furnished with selected pieces from the 50ies, 60ies and 70ies on the inside – which makes it, of course, the perfect location for a vintage furniture market. So, starting at 11:00 and until sundown you can browse through an exceptional selection of furniture at the hotel: lamps, chairs, dishes, tables and all kinds of decorations. The flea market pieces come from well-known vintage experts like Catrinette, Bananas and Voldaandesign Holland.

Buschenschank in Residence
You would probably gladly follow the wonderful winemaker from Vienna, Jutta Ambrositsch-Kalchbrenner, anywhere. Basically in the heart of “Heurigen-country” (and still hidden so well, that tourist busses will not go there, guaranteed), she runs the abandoned traditional Heurigen “Zum Guten Grinzing” for a few weeks every year. With a garden, an old taproom, wonderfully simple food and the red wine “Wiener Rakete”. Which is described as follows: cassis, a few pomegranate seeds and a disco lollipop are dancing half naked for the jury’s praise. Viennese bliss in the 21st century!

Norwegian National Ballet: Carmen
Very seductive! George Bizet’s captivating ballet, performed by a Norwegian ensemble – which is probably one of the most interesting ones in Europe. British Liam Scarlett created a fast-paced and dramatic choreography, which has been praised many times since its premiere in 2015. He relocated the story to Spain during the 1930s, right before the civil war started – into a world, where everybody fights for themself and does anything possible in order to survive. The dancing scenes are just as fantastic as the dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet – and obviously, the music is great as well.

Bonnie Tyler
Incredible! Not only, that Bonnie Tyler seems to be in the best of health – but she also looks exactly like she did back in the 80ies ;-) Her voice hasn’t lost almost any of its huskiness either and still sounds like we have it stuck in our heads from hits like “Holding Out for a Hero”. Her most recent album “Rock & Honey” is full of good-old-Bonnie-style and a great mix of first class rock songs and great ballads. Today, she will be stopping at the Stadthalle with her “Greatest Hits”-tour, which means: backcomb your hair, use a lot of black eyeliner and join in singing until the “Total Eclipse of the Heart”!

Schikaneder’s Vienna
Thanks to the musical “Schikaneder”, at least a few people now know a little bit more about the theater-couple Eleonore und Emanuel Schikaneder. Today, you can follow their traces around the city during a guided tour with Eva Kettner-Gössler. From the Paulanerkirche you walk to the Freihausviertel, where the Magic Flute was developed and had its premiere, and then to different locations, like the Theater an der Wien, the oldest and back then biggest theater in Vienna, which was built and run by Schikaneder. All the while you hear exciting stories about the Magic Flute and the theater life in Vienna back in the days.

The wiry animal-object “Beware of the Journalist” with its bulky typewriter head would definitely make for an original guard dog for the CitySpotterGirl’s office! The current exhibition at the Gallery Fortuna is presenting creative and through and trough humorous pieces that were created using discarded materials like old oil barrels, car metal, bike parts or technical instruments – from the funny mouse to robot-like depictions of people. Bike-rescue of the Greens
In Copenhagen, by now they have more bikes than cars! Vienna still needs quite a few more bikes to get there, but even here, there are more and more bikers. In order for the bikes to be in perfect shape and fit for the new season, the Green Party is touring through the city with its bike-rescue once again, today they will be stopping at Fritz Grünbaum-Platz in the 6th district. Every bike will be examined by experts and afterwards a service and small reparations will be made right then and there – for example adjustments of the gears and breaks, check of wearing parts and, in case of emergency, also tube exchanges. Christiane Rösinger
“You think you’re in a fairy tale, but you’re only stupid couples!” Christiane Rösing was the founder of the ingenious Berlin band Lassie Singers und Britta back in the days. And even today, the musician and author is a guaranteed producer of awesomely moody texts. On her new album everything is about suffering and Rösinger uses her well-known laconic-melancholic but also amusing style to provide a razor-sharp analysis of the present between the life in precarity and the yields of the Generation Inheritance. Today at the brut, she will be presenting one of her funny and captivating live performances, which you shouldn’t miss.

Alfred Wickenburg
Real lookers, the pieces of art from the Styrian artist Alfred Wickenburg! A new exhibition at the Belvedere presents chosen works, around 50 pieces from the 1920ies to the 1930ies and also late pieces of work from the artist. His colorful oil paintings do not look like Styrian aristocracy whatsoever, which he was born from in 1885, but more like Picasso, Matisse or Gauguin: cubist, bright and expressive. The artist realized his “Visions in color and form” – which is the title of the exhibition – also in old age through his beautiful glass windows. Drafts of the windows are part of the exhibition as well.

Lennie Johnson sings without bikini
Well, that sounds very weird! Poetically sassy folklore-dramolettes and touching pop stories – performed by a former crane operator and later poodle trainer. The fictional character Lennie Johnson, born as Gerlinde Eger, boldly made up these former professions to be part of her biography. Just like her career as a former DDR-pop star. What is definitely true is that she is a great musical comedian and she will be revving up the Drachengasse today with her awesomely weird show. Of course, the whole thing is presented on a global level of expertise ;-) A little preview can be found here.

Kalvarienberg Festival
For more than 350 years a real fasting market was celebrated at the Kalvarienberg in Hernals. But, unfortunately, this nostalgic and colorful celebration ended its existence in 2014. At least it turned into the Kalvarienberg Festival – which means no more sentimental feelings and join the crowd! For almost 3 weeks there will be lots to experience, especially local stuff, at the Kalvarienberg that’s been decorated for Easter: concerts from Josh (pop) or the 16er Buam (Viennese songs), every day different exhibitions in the artist tent and workshops like painting Easter eggs or making recycling-blossoms out of PET bottles.

Probably the smallest shop that the CitySpotterGirl has ever introduced! But you don’t really need more than one chilled display case in order to present the sweet and small baked goods from macaroon-master Melinda Gebler. Szihn
Finally another restaurant tip outside of the Gürtel-border! The baker Szihn, well known in the South of Vienna for his naturally produced bread, rebuilt its headquarters in Liesing. And took the opportunity to open a pretty local as well – nicely furnished with a mix of modern and original furniture from the 50ies. Here, you can’t only have good breakfast incredibly early (5:30!) or stop by for coffee and cake, but also eat lunch all day long. Soups, gratinated breads and “handcraft” burgers are part of the menu; especially the burgers taste delicious, because the buns are made of finest brioche. Very nice!
