"Heya Girls!"
So, my dears, it's that time again: the summer break is just around the corner! Not only the city needs its beauty sleep now and then, your CitySpotterGirl needs it too ;-) And as is tradition by now, I serve you, as always in this issue, the best restaurant and shop tips of the last months instead of the weekly events. And I'll let you in on one of my favourite summer happenings: From 7 July, the ImPulsTanz Festival comes whirling through the city. Europe's biggest get-together for contemporary dance brings 54 cool international productions to the city this year, plus 233 workshops, parties and exhibitions and 128 free dance and exercise classes for everyone. And when day turns into night, the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge opens its doors for night owls and dance enthusiasts – in the Burgtheater Vestibule. So take care, dear ladies, and enjoy the summer!

Wishing you a wonderful summer,
Your CitySpotterGirl

P.S. We’ll be back on 1 September with the experts’ special newsletter – and from 8 September onwards as usual!

Körbchen
Absolutely (l)ace! You may already know the lingerie “Körbchen”, but now the label has moved and presents its homemade lingerie in the new, elegant and spacious studio on Margaretenstraße. The two founders still sew themselves. “It's just fun,” is how the girls put it. They work exclusively with sustainable materials and recycled lace from Italy and Germany. Their bras don't have underwires, but all the lingerie is comfortable, suitable for everyday wear, yet chic and with lace. Which is no contradiction, as you can see. There is also swimwear available, by the way.

Körbchen, Margaretenstraße 80, 1050 Vienna. Tue-Thu 11:00 to 17:00, Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 11:00 to 18:00. Web

Liebling im Volkstheater
Maybe it was the bright sunshine. But yesterday's lunch in the cosy garden (despite the bustling city life), the colourful chairs, the retro-pastel carnation bouquets on the tables, the delicious mushroom risotto, the summery apple pie – CitySpotterGirl was happy. Because: That's just what Vienna is! Even in the noisiest metropolitan hustle and bustle, creative islands of tranquility open up. To have a long breakfast, hang out or have a good meal. Before the renovation of the Volkstheater, the box office was here; now the new Cafe Liebling resides here and opens the theatre during the day as well.

Neni am Wasser
This will take some getting used to. The open, lively and always a bit chaotic “Tel Aviv Beach” on the Danube Canal has become a permanent restaurant – weatherproof (so it can also be visited in winter), few fresh-air seats, large menu. The look, inspired by Neni Mallorca, puts you in a summer mood. Specially designed furniture, colours in earthy tones, lots of cacti and bast lamps create a boho feeling. The cuisine is familiar Neni style, from mezze to salt-crusted fish and steaks. But you have to get used to the opening hours: during the week they only open in the evenings

Habari Japan
We already had a pop-up store with Japanese design last summer, but now Habari has a permanent Japanese branch. In the area of 110 light-flooded square metres (in the former shu!), a multitude of lovingly assembled products from the land of the rising sun are presented – from simple rice bowls to chopsticks and sake cups to bonbonniere tins and plates. In addition, there are typical Japanese home and living accessories such as stylish bento boxes or colourful furoshiki cloths. Timeless minimalist design for Japan fans and design aficionados.

Ponykarussell
CitySpotterGirl learned something new at the weekend: the Pony carousel in the Prater is older than the Ferris Wheel, the dome building dates back to 1887. Today, there are no more ponies running in circles pointlessly, but the run-down place in the middle of Prater was recently turned into a stylish café. With a pink and gold cake counter, jungle wallpaper and Mexican tiles – an Insta-dream. And a good tip for breakfast fans: Thum ham, Eggs Benedict, Öfferl breads and great coffee are served daily until 14:00. At weekends it's crowded and noisy ;-)

And yet another smart hotel has opened. This time directly behind the MuseumsQuartier, where it is easily recognisable with its facade completely greened with plants. Inside, the jungle-like setup continues, giving the Cafe Brasserie, located in the centre of the hotel, a casual and playful ambience. It's a great place to have breakfast, hang out and dine on several levels. In the evening, restaurant chef Parvin and her team of women serve vegetable-heavy cuisine, and for breakfast they serve some unusual things – like carrot tartare, dashi egg and breakfast cocktails.

Velo Peaches
This was definitely missing in Vienna: Velo Peaches is a feminist bike shop that celebrates openness, equality and awareness. When you enter the new shop, the smell of rubber immediately wafts around your nose. Naturally, you can buy bicycle inner tubes, spare parts and accessories here. In addition, chic, cool and fast bikes, among others from the brands Omnium and 8bar from Berlin. The frame sizes are all available in X-Small as well, specifically for women. The 3 owners also do repairs and service themselves – by the way, they first met each other on their boneshakers at a game of bike polo ;-)

 Napoleon
Napoleon
Opened this week, already overrun on the first day: The latest gastro project of the Querfeld family of cafetiers is called Napoleon and is located in Kagran. The Freihof, dating back to 1494, was completely renovated for the ancient and now new inn. Each of the countless parlours and dining areas was furnished differently – always funny, often quirky (with embroidered pictures and photo wallpapers), in any case original. They serve typical Viennese dishes with a twist (also for vegetarians, like colourful turnips from the oven) and craft beer. Plus, a huge garden and service that doesn't buckle even under stress. It works!

Meinklang farm shop
The Meinklang Demeter farm on Neusiedlersee already tried out a Viennese farm shop during the lockdowns, now the pop-up has become a permanent shop – stylishly furnished with lots of wood! The Michlits family has moved their bakery here, and in addition to very fresh bread and pastries from their own grain, they also offer fine wines, milk, a selection of vegetables, herbs and flowers, and a butcher's shop like in the old days: Here you can get 10dag schnitzel and fresh minced meat, unpackaged. And there's also a small bistro with breakfast, snacks and a wine bar. Really nice!

Die Wohnung
Mid-century lovers will be delighted! The vintage boutique Die Wohnung sells old pieces of furniture, from golden bar carts to wildly patterned fauteuils. Owner Vanessa Vehovec lovingly picks out everything herself. She has been in the business for a long time, but only recently moved to the 5th district with bag and baggage. Her vintage treasures are often from the 1950s and 1960s, but you can also find perfectly shaped wooden chairs from the turn of the century and brightly coloured 70s lamps. They're not exactly bargains, though, but they are stylish pieces for a beautiful home.

Cafe Bellaria
The Bellaria, opened in 1870, is the oldest coffee house still operating in Vienna. But you wouldn't know it by looking at the old lady – she has just been extensively renovated and beamed into the 21st century. The floor, for example, was cast from concrete, but the old dome and stucco have been beautifully restored. Open daily from early morning to late at night, the breakfast menu – from Eggs Royal to Passion Fruit Porridge – is huge, the steak frites at lunch is excellent and great drinks are served in the evening. It looks chic and is suitable for every situation: this is how to coffee house today!

 Sister*hood
Sister*hood Vienna
A feast for the eyes: a new, bright shop filled with home accessories! The blankets, carpets, wickerwork and cooking utensils are fair-trade and are for the most part handmade by women in countries where work is rarely paid appropriately. The two sisters Veronika and Magdalena Kupfersberger want to counteract this – worldwide sisterhood, so to speak. The globetrotters know most of their producers personally, after all, they regularly travel around in Africa and Asia. And in the future, the design shop will also become a meeting place: for yoga, women's circles, and other things.

glore Vienna
glore stands for globally responsible: the German concept store recently opened a branch here in Vienna, too! The kicker: glore doesn't sell its own brands and designs, but verifies the ecological and social sustainability of the green brands on offer. At a time when even high street fashion likes to put on a green cloak, that's something we could really use. From Armed Angels to Zeebraham, there's a mix of well-known and new brands. The pleasantly spacious shop in Burggasse also convinces you with its large selection of fair jeans in many different sizes!

John Döner
We've never had kebab like this in Vienna! Firstly, at the newly opened John Döner you can pick up the filled bread as take away, but above all you can sit down all fancy in this nice restaurant. Secondly: Everything, truly everything, is organic here! And thirdly: John even serves kebabs with salmon trout. Or all veggie. And you can choose whether you want the whole thing as a kebab, a Dürüm, or a bowl. The delicious pita bread comes from Joseph, the chicken and fish taste excellent, and the toppings with raclette cheese or hemp seeds are also creative. Very likeable!

 Brasserie Zögernitz
Brasserie Zögernitz
A house with history: The old Casino Zögernitz was opened in 1837 and with its “richly decorated hall” it developed into a popular meeting place of the Viennese high society. In recent years, things quieted down for the Biedermeier jewel until Marco Simonis opened a brasserie there in the summer. With floral wallpaper, marble, brightly coloured furniture and neon patterns on the ceiling – a wild, yet still elegant mixture. The cuisine has a French touch, whether moules frites (small mussels) with fries or char with truffles. Tastes very elegant, too. The highlight: the beautiful garden!

Nomen est omen. During the Lockdown, gourmets can immerse themselves in the recently opened world of “Delicious Food”! Over 200 selected delicacies from all over the world can be discovered in the historically elegant town palace Erdödy-Fürstenberg. For example, the exclusive teas, biscuits and jams of the British luxury label Fortnum & Mason. And the heritage-protected barn in the shop is beautiful!

XO Grill
The wandering has come to an end! After various pop-ups all over the city, the guys from XO Grill have now moved into a permanent home in Kettenbrückengasse. The menu is still not big, but it is unusual. Besides “dirty fries”, there is exactly one dish – the Smash Burger. And it is quite something. XO beef is used for the patty, meat from old dairy cows, whose unusually intense flavour fits perfectly. For each burger, the meat is freshly grilled and then packed into a bun of Joseph Brot, along with lots and lots of mustard seeds and Taleggio. Delicious!

Chez Bernard
Hotel Kummer on Mariahilferstraße was quite lavishly renovated by “Mr. Motto” Bernd Schlacher and transformed into a fantastic boutique-hotel. A modern glass dome is now enthroned on top, housing the restaurant and bar. And although they’re still in the soft opening phase, everything is already running like clockwork. For breakfast: the best porridge ever! The service: amazingly nice! The view: awesome! And the interior, despite all its elegance, feels really cosy. This is a great place to eat all day or just get a coffee. CitySpotterGirl’s new favourite venue!

Once again, we have a smart new eco-fashion store in town. At Consches, you'll find wildly patterned dresses, tops and trousers made from eco-friendly materials. Design newcomer Cornelia Lindner founded her exciting and often colourful fashion label as an alternative to the black-grey-beige basics of other fair-trade brands. La vie en rose! This sweet little fashion café is a good mood recipe. It's rare to find such a charming and loving place in Vienna – and yes, the world looks much prettier with a glass of rose spritzer in your hand. Jewellery, bags and bridesmaids' dresses can be bought here in the midst of vintage living room flair, but you can also drink coffee and feast on chocolate cake. Afternoon tea is even nicer: you take a seat on the rocking sofa and are treated to homemade scones (from the mum), clotted cream, sandwiches, tea and champagne. Tastes at least as good as in Cornwall!

There's a new concept store in the noble Daringerhof in Sievering! The lustrous art nouveau house with its pretty garden is already enchanting. And when you enter the building, you are basically standing in the extended living room of its owner Elisabeth Schmidinger-Schott. Fine clothes for a bigger budget (from MMissoni, Odeeh and co.) hang next to her own in-house leather fashion collection, and on top of that: home accessories, furniture and a well-stocked bar. Fancy a Fruth tart, a coffee or a glass of champagne on the lawn? It's quite rare to be asked to forgo the cutlery and eat with your fingers in a restaurant. But the friendly lady at Modi was right: Georgian khinkali, or filled dumplings, taste best this way. The khachapuri (freshly baked bread filled with cheese) is also delicious, and this you can eat with fork and knife again. Since everything in this Georgian specialty restaurant is freshly prepared, it’s possible that the meal may sometimes take a bit longer. The sausage stand by Börsepark has been here for what feels like forever, but now everything is different. And that’s not just due to the fact that snack stands are a crisis-proof institution in times of lockdowns. Recently, creative cooking with a lot of heart and soul has been going on here. The bosna? It's vegan with fermented spring onions and Madras curry (the sausage comes from Hut und Stiel).
