"Heya Girls!"
Now I'm almost getting a bit sentimental. Once again, Christmas is just around the corner and another year is drawing to a close. And so I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you! Thank you to you wonderful readers who have been loyal to us for years! It is a pleasure for me and my team to provide you with insider knowledge from Vienna every week. Like today the information that the mumok is closing its doors on 8 January and will remain closed until 5 June for renovation work. So the upcoming public holidays are the perfect opportunity to quickly dash to the museum in the MQ and discover the wonderful collages by Elisabeth Wild (photo). Or to take a look behind the scenes on a backstage tour. Or to build sculptures from Christmas paper, boxes, plastic and polystyrene packaging at the gift-wrapping recycling centre. See you again next year!
Wishing you a loving Christmas and all the best for 2024,
Your CitySpotterGirl
mumok, MuseumsQuartier, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna. Until 7 January 2024. Web
P.S. CitySpotterGirl will take a Christmas break! The next issue will be published on 25 January!

Sale at Yes my dear
The name says it all – here you can find everything that is good for your soul and heart. Because the elegant Daringer Hof in Sievering has been housing Elisabeth Schmidinger-Schott's concept store since 2022. And since good things never stagnate, Elisabeth is planning everything anew for 2024. That's why the old has to go and designer pieces from smart to fancy can be snapped up at sale prices until Saturday – such as fashion by Norma Kamali and Antonelli, outdoor by Paola Lenti, interiors by Cappellini and lamps by Flos. Also a great tip for last-minute gifts!
Yes my dear, Sieveringer Straße 36, 1190 Vienna. Until 23.12. Tue-Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 10:00 to 16:00. Web

SchönDing Café
That's probably another thing for the new year, when Christmas parties and New Year's Eve planning leave time to work again ;-) Because there's a nice new place for that now. For the general refurbishment of the Schönborn Gartenpalais, many objects from the Volkskunde museum have been moved to the depot and two rooms of the former display collection have been transformed into the SchönDing Cafe. Here you can work in a cosy atmosphere and treat yourself to coffee, sweet snacks or bagels from the SchönDing shop. Makes starting work again so much more fun!

 ROSSO by l'autentico Cineplexx SCS
Kulinarik Kino
Do we eat before or after the cinema? The perennial question among cineastes – until now! Because at Cineplexx Westfield SCS, the blockbusters are not just of a visual nature. With the Rosso by l'autentico restaurant, it is the first cinema in Austria to revolutionise the popcorn snack. While visitors look at the screen in fascination, they will be treated to delicacies all'italiana in the cinema suites from today. These include antipasti platters, Mediterranean beef tartare and “Al Taglio” pizza. Various aperitifs are also available. Cheers, to square eyes and happily rumbling stomachs!
Cineplexx Westfield SCS, Westfield Shopping City Süd, 2351 Wiener Neudorf. From 21 December. Web

 Stefanie Sargnagel
Stefanie Sargnagel Warehouse Sale
Viva la Vulva! If you are one of those people still on the hunt for presents you would do well to pop into Stefanie Sargnagel's cool studio. Just in time for the pampering season, the writer will be holding a warehouse sale where her shirts and prints with tongue-in-cheek social criticism are available at a reduced price. Since it’s so close to Christmas, Stefanie Sargnagel insists on being in the shop herself, of course, so die-hard fans can also take this opportunity to have their cool pieces signed. Also great: Riot Grrrl art and fashion will be on sale in the same studio, as well. Cool!

Santa’s Xmas-Factory at the Marriott
Hohoho and jingle bells! If all the twinkling on Rathausplatz isn’t kitschy enough for you, you can go all out at the Marriott Hotel and enjoy some USA-like Christmas mood. In Santa's Xmas Factory, a Christmas market right in the hotel, glittering stalls with pretty things and treats await. You can buy Stollen made in the in-house patisserie, Christmas tree baubles in the shape of soccer balls or hot dogs, or candles made from leftover candles from the hotel. And tomorrow, Caroline Kreuzberger provides a swinging atmosphere with a best of American Christmas songs!
Marriott Hotel, Parkring 12A, 1010 Vienna. Until 26.12. Thu-Sat 11:00 to 20:00, Sun-Wed until 19:00. Web

 Schneekugelmuseum Wien
Christmas at the Snow Globe Manufactory
As it’s often the case with inventions, the manufacturer of surgical instruments Erwin Perzy came across the decorative shaking glass globe with snowing effect by pure coincidence (he actually wanted to increase the light output of the carbon filament light). Since then, the nostalgic wonder globes with Christmas tree-, animal- or Ferris wheel content travel all around the world from Vienna. Many of the splendid kitsch-objects can be admired at the snow globe museum and the shop. Daily until today – it’s entirely possible that you might find another new favourite good-mood-souvenir here ;-)
Wiener Schneekugelmanufaktur, Schumanngasse 87, 1170 Vienna. Until 23.12. daily from 9:00 to 18:00. Web

 Wiener Staatsoper
Shifting Symmetries
There are works that have fundamentally revolutionised ballet. As many as three such specialities will be premiering today at the Wiener Staatsoper. William Forsythe, George Balanchine and Hans van Manen take classical ballet ad absurdum in a breathtaking way. Body architectures geared towards harmony are shaken, symmetries are shifted and classical movement sequences are reassembled. Stability is gained from the fight against gravity. In Shifting Symmetries, the grand masters of choreography demonstrate what modern ballet can do.
Wiener Staatsoper, Opernring 2, 1010 Vienna. 23 December 19:00 to 21:30. From 13 €. Web

Punch on the museum roof
The Christmas stress is spreading epidemically right now, so how about enjoying a relaxing glass of punch in a magical place as an antidote? In this case, we recommend a wintery guided tour of the Natural History Museum. On the 1-hour tour, you will learn a lot about the history of the building and its architecture, you can take a look behind the scenes of the house and even climb to the very top into the dome. The highlight, however, is a night cap on the roof – a cup of punch with an overwhelming view over the romantically glittered city centre. Beautiful!

LadenKonezept Last-minute Presents
Every year again ... you think you still have enough time to buy presents and then suddenly the 22nd is just around the corner and the most important gifts are still missing! Instead of now dashing through the city in a panic, it’s enough to visit the gift pop-up at LadenKonzept, where creative people and designers offer their regional, handmade things, far away from mass taste. This year's event is all about Wunderweiber and so the products on display, from decorations and unique jewellery to candles, are a lot about femininity. Today is the last day!

Here you can gloriously feast your way to Christmas Eve without having to lift a finger in the kitchen yourself. In addition to the regular brunch menu, dishes like oriental red cabbage salad, roast duck, salmon fillet and a gingerbread tiramisu to finish smile at you from the buffet. All you can eat!

Viennese Tschuschenkapelle: Xmas Special
Tschuschenkapelle is a cult band. For over 30 years, the musicians around band leader Slavko Ninic have been mixing traditional Balkan rhythms with jazz and Wienerlied. It is also a tradition that Christmas in the Balkans is not celebrated until 25 December, and Orthodox Christmas is not celebrated at all until 7 January. That's a good thing because it means the Tschuschenkapelle can play for us on 24th! So if you get tired of the family madness, you can scoot after the exchanging of presents and head off to Vienna's most popular Balkan band!
Porgy & Bess, Riemergasse 11, 1010 Vienna. 24.12. 22:00. 28 €. Also as stream/pay as you wish. Web

Christmas Market Schönbrunn
CitySpotterGirl didn't make it to a single one of Vienna's Christmas markets this year. Too much stress, too many tourists and somehow the thought of a tipsy mulled wine binge didn't really create the right mood. But today is the day – the exchanging of presents is over, the day is still young and fresh. Wrapped up warm and in absolute peace of mind, you can stroll through Schönbrunn, take a last look at the 18-metre-high fir tree and wander through the beautiful market in front of the picturesque palace backdrop. Maybe even with a cup of punch ;-)

Free admission to the MAK
If you want to wake up your grey cells from hibernation after countless gourmet orgies and Christmas rom-com marathons, you can stroll into the MAK today and soak up some culture. Best of all: It's all free! The museum and the Geymüllerschlössel both open their doors to the current collections, exhibitions and treasures. In the 1st district, there are insights into the magnificent exhibition by Wiener Werkstätte artist Felice Rix-Ueno, and the textile-ceramics show “Hard/Soft” can also be admired. And Flora Miranda shows her futuristic haute couture at the Geymüllerschlössel!

Christmas gifts exchange
Well, have you still not had enough of the Xmas spectacle? Then head to the Gleis//Garten! Vienna's first food hall only just opened in the cool brick building in October. Now the hall filled with giant palm trees invites you to some fun after-Christmas get-togethers. Today's programme includes Ugly Sweater Day, which means that anyone who shows up in a Christmas jumper that is as tasteless as possible will receive a free punch as a reward! And if you want to get rid of unloved Christmas presents, you can swap them with like-minded people tomorrow.

Gleis//Garten, Eichenstraße 2, 1120 Vienna. 26 + 27 December 11:00 to 24:00. Web

Bookbot book taxi
So, the gift-giving craziness has come to an end for this year and, as is the case every time, one or two presents that you don't know what to do with have snuck into the pile of presents. Anyone who has been misunderstood in their literary passions, for example, can easily (and sustainably!) get rid of their unloved reading material. For Austria's first book taxi, Bookbot, offers five time slots three days a week in which books are collected from home free of charge in electric cars to be sold on the second-hand book platform. It couldn't be more convenient!

Okay, delicatessen and the Balkans are not always associated with each other. However, MezeSliva in the fourth district now shows that the peninsula has quite a wide range of culinary delicacies to offer! From Serbian brandies à la Sliwowitz, to truffle salami and olive oil from Istria to ajvar and cvarci (greaves), there are plenty of country-specific delicacies here, which can also be tasted on site in cosy seating areas. Especially nice: owner Bojana regularly organises exhibitions with artists from the Balkan region living in Vienna on the upper floor of the stylish delicatessen shop!

 Florian Weitzer Hotels & Restaurants
In the past, the 8th floor of the Ringstrasse hotel Grand Ferdinand was open only to hotel guests and sometimes to all for brunch events. That has now changed: The motto on the top floor now is: final stop Riviera! The public restaurant Limon plays with the cuisine of the Mediterranean – France, Spain and Italy are on the menu, from bouillabaisse to pollo a la mallorquina. The neo-baroque, very red ambience is on the verge of kitschy, but somehow this suits the atmosphere up here quite well. And in summer, the terrace, distant views and rooftop pool will make it even more Mediterranean!
