"Heya Girls!"
At the moment, the Ice Saints are still allowed to let off steam. But next week, women, life will start again! On 19 May, not only the bars and restaurants will open again, but also the cinemas. And on the very first day, the city's most beautiful open-air cinema opens: domestic cinema in the fresh spring air of the Augarten, live and very real – you wouldn't believe it. On 40 evenings, current Austrian productions and newly restored classics will be shown in the romantic garden of the Filmarchiv, from “Ecstasy” to “Quo vadis, Aida?” and “Love Machine”. Thanks to a new shading system and extra strong projection, the films can be presented as early as dusk. And the best thing to do is to combine the whole thing with a visit to the “Grünstern Heurigen”, where you can enjoy a meal before and after the cinema in the middle of an enchantingly overgrown piece of urban jungle.

Wishing you a happy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Xenia Hausner, Bildrecht Wien 2021
Xenia Hausner. True Lies
“True Lies” is the name of the current exhibition by the Austrian Xenia Hausner, born in 1951, not because she is so good at lying ;-) But because she makes fictions visible – as one of the most important painters of our time, by the way. Hausner is a real master of staging. For her XXL paintings, cut-up cardboard cars become the stage and photos of actors become living figures. “Pure Cool” the canvas says, or “Headshot”. No surprise, since her gaze is primarily dominated by women. It’s great as a 3-D tour or now also in real life!

Garden Stroll in England
We put this tip on a holiday on purpose. Because if you embark on this virtual journey, you won’t resurface for several hours. The British organisation “National Garden Scheme” usually makes private gardens accessible to the public, the entrance fees are then donated to good causes. Since everything is closed because of Corona, an abundance of videos presenting 190 member gardens have been put online. Divided into sections, you can view gardens in the Cotswolds, stroll through cottage gardens or visit Sandringham House. Amazing!

Long Night of Cellar Lanes Online
There's a first time for everything – and today is indeed the 1st online Long Night of Wine Cellar Lanes. During the virtual tour via Zoom through the Kammersdorfer cellar lane, you are very close to the dramas and myths of this unique cultural asset. The Kammersdorf mill may also play a role. Hilarious and ambiguous stories are mixed in with the dramatic ones. Ilse Gritsch and the poet of the wine country, Elisabeth Schöffl-Pöll, invite you to this spooky and cheerful evening. You only have to get a fine glass of Veltliner yourself. Start is at sunset!

 Augarten
Spring Sale at Augarten Porzellan
To arrange bouquets in style – just the right sale. During the Augarten Manufaktur sale, a collection of various vases is currently up to 60 percent off in the online shop. The pieces are timeless in pure white, so they go with any interior style. If you already have enough vases, you might be interested in the colourful espresso cups with gold rims or some pieces from the Maria Theresa 2.0 series, the modern interpretation of the popular classic in turquoise and grey. Here, prices have plummeted as well, as they need to make space in the warehouse.

And if I devoted my life to …
...one of its feathers? Colourful, radical, poetic and political: over 35 artists from all over the world – from the Amazon region to Australia, from Guatemala to Barbados and India – not only want to raise awareness of environmental exploitation and destruction with their works, they also question traditional patriarchal models, gender roles and colonial and racist discourses. A diverse, shimmering show that raises many questions! On today's opening day, instead of a vernissage, the exhibition is open from 14:00 to 19:00, with free admission.

2 flea markets at the same place
The scramble of a flea market crowd is still a bit of an issue, but this one takes place outdoors (in the parking area next to the Marxhalle), and since the participants set up their tables next to their cars, there's enough space between them. At the women's flea market, sports equipment, women's clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery and cosmetics are offered. Since the whole thing is organised by “Geburtsallianz”, there are also children's items on offer. At the same time, the new books+art flea market takes place in a separate area. In addition to vintage goods, hobby artists also present their works.

Rakete Part 1
Last year “Rakete – the festival for young choreographers” had to be cancelled, this year it will take place in two parts online. In the first part, Eliza Trefas and Katarzyna Paluch celebrate the stage as a place of contradiction and pleasure in nonsense. Julia Zastava's performative installation promises a journey into another dimension and Kidow's Kim likes the monstrous. Finally, the Viennese Samuel Feldhandler explores possibilities of implementing musical forms in a dance context. All contributions are available free of charge as video-on-demand for 72 hours.

Ludwig Wittgenstein
Thinking helps! One of the most passionate thinkers and unconventional philosophers of the 20th century – Ludwig Wittgenstein – died exactly 70 years ago. Which is reason enough for an online exhibition by the Austrian National Library! Wittgenstein has left the world not only his legendary "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus", but many other insights into the meaning of life. And they are still so true and so great that they have even been included in the UNESCO's World Documentary Heritage. With diaries, private letters and photos, we go right into his mind.

Asparagus from Alfred Mühl Farm
The best detox cure in spring is asparagus. The cold weather has put a damper on the white spears this year, though. But now it's time to start – and if you want a very special asparagus, you have to go to Aderklaa on the outskirts of the city. The secret tip is called: Mühl farm. Asparagus is now cut daily – and every day, even on Sundays and public holidays, you can buy it fresh in the pretty farm shop. With mask and distancing, of course. There are both the green and the white spears (and strawberries!), and despite the outstanding taste, the price here is most delightful.

Caritas: cheap office furniture
Promise: Corona will eventually be history. But the office at home is here to stay. So a desk upgrade comes just in time, because good office equipment is often in short supply between the clothes horse and the bedroom closet. On offer: office cabinets, desks, swivel chairs, conference tables, chairs, storage containers & co. Attention: the purchased goods must be taken home immediately!

Higher Powers
What good and evil forces are we exposed to? Higher powers and our ideas about them have always shaped the cultures of the world. And even today, forces of nature, epidemics or political systems give us the feeling of being exposed to events that we cannot influence. Corona sends its regards! In an unusual show, the KHM and the Weltmuseum are presenting 100 objects from all over the world on this theme, some of which have never been seen before – from a shaman altar from Peru to Wallenstein's horoscope amulet. Barbara Frischmuth
She has always told stories about strong, sensitive, sensual women who have to assert themselves. Now Barbara Frischmuth has published a new collection of stories. “Dein Schatten tanzt in der Küche” brings together six women's destinies, six variations on loneliness and self-assertion, six attempts not to let anyone get them down – neither men, nor the course of time, and certainly not age. With a live broadcast from Alte Schmiede, the wonderful author will present her book today and follow in the footsteps of Darya, Agnes, Amelie and Paula.

Home Collection by Hand Made Story
After years of having her colourful African designs pop up here and there in the city, Barbara Alli, a Viennese-by-choice who was born in Ghana and grew up in Nigeria, has settled down in Wieden. In her store, the bubbly all-rounder (she is also a singer, songwriter and dancer!) sells her designs made from fair-trade African fabrics. From now on, there are also accessories for a colourful home: cushions, placemats, curtains, and pictures are available in countless fabric variations and colours, and custom orders are also possible. An end to the grey monotony!

Gewürztraminer
Danceable music doesn't have to be trivial! With the new album “A bissl übertrieben”, the Viennese scene band Gewürztraminer returns and presents gypsy Balkan pop in its full range. Filigree world music with guitars and accordion, in flying change to hip hop beats and rock bombast and, in addition to that, puns and sarcasm in dialect – the Gewürztraminer sound is unmistakable. The lyrics are somewhere between Seeed and EAV, but there is often a serious background behind the banter. Today we get to hear the concert via live stream from Porgy!

Lena Hoschek Flagship Store Vienna
The opulence of the Graz fashion designer Lena Hoschek has now got a new address: Seilergasse, first district. In the newly opened 200 sqm flagship store, everything is a bit bigger, chicer and more plushy. And yet, in addition to the current “Antoinette's Garden” collection, a cosy salon atmosphere has also moved in. Between pretty vintage chests of drawers, stucco mirrors and gold ornamental wallpaper, there is a lot of floral, striped and frilly Hoschek style on two floors. There are also “limited edition” pieces and her iconic ribbon skirts. Welcome to Austria's Coco ;-)

B.Bagels
We have to wait a few more days until all restaurants are allowed to open again. In the meantime, a pop-up is serving us in an unusual place. They don’t show films yet in the Burg cinema at the moment, but the door is already open. A few stairs down into the foyer – and you end up at a counter. The young team from “Brotkost” in Piaristengasse produces bagels with organic brioche from BROTocnik. They are either unusually filled – with omelette, truffle mayo and mushrooms – or classics with salmon and avocado. But they all have one thing in common: they're really big and really good!
