"Heya Girls!"
Well, only few people know this: One of the oldest yoga studios in the world was founded in Vienna in 1934 – by a woman. Susanne Schmida, born in Moravia in 1894, was a pioneer of her time. She was one of the first women to receive a doctorate in philosophy in Vienna. And as a philosopher, yoga teacher and dancer she opened the yoga institute Dr. Schmida in Lehargasse, which still exists today. From October 4, the so-called Schmida Lectures will now take place for the first time: They aim to bring the heritage of this unusual woman into the present. They will shed light on central aspects of the rich scientific and artistic tradition. Susanne Schmida's search for new, contemporary ways of life, based on philosophy, dance, gymnastics and yoga, will be reflected upon in a dialogue with contemporary artists and experts – through lectures, performances and films. Another strong Viennese woman to discover!
Wishing you a good week,
Your CitySpotterGirl
Institut Dr. Schmida, Lehargasse 1, 1060 Vienna. From 4 October. Free entry. Web

Retro-Leather Flea Market
Grandma Margaret's grandkids continue to run the store founded in 1956, but they have now turned the warehouse of “Margaret Lederwaren” upside down – and discovered chic things from the old days: some of their grandparents' imports from Italy, plus unique pieces from the store's primeval times. At the retro flea market, the vintage bags made of real leather can now be bought for 3 days at a good price: classic hand and shoulder bags as well as elegant clutches cost 20€ to 50€, and particularly high-quality pieces are available for as little as 100€. True style, in any case ;-)

Happy Birthday Postcard
On October 1, 1869, “Correspondence Cards” were sent out by post for the first time in Austria. Today we call them postcards – and until recently they were definitely past their peak. Funnily enough, Corona has taken these nostalgic things out of the woodwork. It simply is a lot of fun to find analogue greetings in the post box, after all! The hip store art postal is celebrating the 151st anniversary of the postcard today with a party on Margaretenstraße, together with the nice stores around – and with the firm goal that at least 151 postcards will be sent out today!

Victims of Their Time
From today you have exactly 31 days: the pop-up exhibition “Victims of Their Time” can only be seen for a short month. The “Leerstand Gallery” uses an abandoned Libro branch, which closed at the beginning of the lockdown and is itself a victim in this sense. What does that do to a society when victimhood permeates all areas of life? How do artists deal with the concept of victim? There are many meanings behind the term. Rising newcomers like Anja Ronacher are hanging next to big names like Günter Brus and Hermann Nitsch.

Long Day of Refugees
Still a current topic, unfortunately: on today's long day of refugees, everyone can deal with the topic of fleeing and asylum and learn more about it at numerous free events. In the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, artist Deborah Sengl will use an escape room in order to make visitors think, and a WebQuest developed by UNHCR, a kind of digital puzzle hunt, will premiere. Four personalities with a refugee background will take the participants on a virtual journey through the internet – and at the end, as with any scavenger hunt, a very special treasure awaits them.

Vienna Escargot Festival
Nice and slow, that’s how the Viennese escargot has conquered the whole city ;-) Just a couple of years ago, only few cooking pioneers dared preparing the local Gugumuck delicacy. Now the who is who of the Austrian gastronomy scene is on board! Until October 4, “Escargots with Mushroom Ragout” (at the Vestibül), “Viennese Escargots, Pumpkin, Rosemary, Apple” (at the Ludwig Van) or “Roman Snails with Chervil Semmel-Soufflé” (at The View) land on the plates. Konstantin Filippou brings “Viennese Oyster” as a surprise course. Over 75 venues in all districts!

My Generation. The Jablonka Collection
No need to jet to Los Angeles or New York. One of the most important collections of American and German art of the 1980s is now housed in the Albertina: the Jablonka Collection. In the show “My Generation”, the art dealer offers exciting insights into his collection. On display are Mike Kelley's visions of the mystical city of Kandor or his stuffed animals knotted into monsters. Sherrie Levine's highly polished bronze, ironically called Buddha, is part of the exhibition, as are Damien Hirst's objects or Philip Taaffe's Artificial Paradise.

Green Vienna
Indeed: Vienna's oldest and smallest vineyard is located between house facades in the middle of the 1st district. On the 10sqm small spot – what else – Grüner Veltliner is grown. This rarity is discovered during the city walk “Green Vienna” with Romana Fullerney, who enlightens us about agriculture in the city centre (!) and leads us to special natural monuments. Stops are the mighty red beech in the Rathauspark (a botanical rarity), the first “green” public bus shelter and the protected ginkgo tree in the Stadtpark. What this tree has to do with Goethe, though, is not yet revealed ;-)

Sunday Brunch x 3
What is the best way to get late risers out of bed? Sure, with an unusual breakfast! Since today, after the Corona break, “Unkai” is back with its sushi-brunch in the Grand Hotel: fabulous Makis and butter-soft Sashimi directly from the toque kitchen. Unusual is the performance brunch “Woiza”. With pumpkin ragout and pear strudel, some performance feats are served in the baroque dining room of an old villa. And at the Motto, things get extra-cool: comfy breakfast, DJ sounds and day drinks are served at the Pyjama Bruch (yes, really!).

Emily Stewart
A debut that sounds familiar: violinist and composer Emily Stewart has already toured with the celebrated pop artist “Soap & Skin”, and in the evening she will perform her first album at the Theater an der Gumpendorfer Straße (TAG). It's called “The Anatomy of Melancholy” and that's exactly what it is like. For her melancholic, minimalistic sound she freely and wildly picks elements from the whole musical spectrum: classical, jazz, folk and improvisation, here and there with gentle vocals about longing and vulnerability. Contemporary and very soulful.

Slow Fashion Corner: Gertraud Gerst
Make four out of one: to prevent things from getting too bustling, the “Artwork Space” will be holding four small fashion pop-ups instead of the planned one. For a fortnight at a time, the show room will be owned by one slow fashion designer alone to present her collections and models. The first to move in is Gertraud Gerst with her fashion design and upcycling manufactory: dungarees in linen denim, wide shirts and wide trousers in straight, minimalist cuts move between feminine and masculine. Between the change of clothes, be sure to drop by the Aperobar ;-)

Hops and malt: the beer cooking course
Today there is a promotion: instead of being a drink, beer is now included in the pot as a star ingredient. The only beer cooking course in Vienna shows under chef's guidance how black beer, wheat beer, or stout ale can add spicy flavours and a malty note to favourite dishes. A sip of wheat beer is added to the chestnut risotto with goat's cheese and the roast young pork tastes good in malt beer juice. Also included in the menu are beer-bacon-potato soup, the so-called beer meat with pretzel dumplings and marinated spare ribs in a honey-beer crust. Cheers!

Cobario
This will be holidays for the ears: The Viennese adventurous trio “Cobario” travels around the world most of the time, capturing their experiences by guitar and violin. Their new album “weit weg” includes world music from almost 30 countries. At today's concert, the ears will go on a musical journey to several continents: this sometimes sounds like hot days in Mexico (“Tango Della Morte”), sometimes like gripping Balkan rhythms (“Hotel Blada”) or rocky Orient (“Sary Arka”). But no matter where the journey takes you, the sound always carries you along. Listen in here.

Loos Design & Redesign
The Furniture Museum is known for one of the largest Loos furniture collections in the world. The 150th birthday of Adolf Loos (1870-1933) will now be taken as an opportunity to take a closer look at the architect's furniture design and to ask about his influence on Austrian designers. Furniture designs by breadedEscalope, Patrick Rampelotto, Soda Designers and Vandasye will be presented, all of whom are exploring Loos' world of ideas. And the museum will also explore the question of what role models Loos himself had – such as English designers.

Bellas Vienna
Brand new, beautifully renovated and radiantly bright: Jeannette Mang has transplanted her shoe business from the Internet to a house steeped in history (from 1371) in the 1st district. At Bellas, there are only a few types of shoes, but these are available in a vast number of different colours and combinations: the signature product are tassel loafers, but colourful and classic Chelsea boots also await the ladies for the autumn. Favourite combination at present: brown/pink. All shoes are produced by hand in small factories in Tuscany and are always available in limited quantities. Beautiful!

Le Pic
You are immediately tempted to say: a small piece of Paris in Vienna. But the small piece turns out to be surprisingly large. The front part of the brasserie, with its sofas and fauteuils, is quite comfortable and coffee-house like, in the back – with its gaudy wallpaper and brick walls – you can enjoy a pleasant meal at classic tables. And it tastes good! Beef bratwurst with puree, baguettes au gratin, leg of lamb and aligot (cheese fondue) bring France to your plate in culinary terms. Breakfast and dinner are also available – Le Pic is a restaurant for every time of day and every situation ;-)
