"Heya Girls!"
I’ve been wondering for quite some time now when the last time was that I strolled through the area of the Hofburg. Result: never. For me, the core of our city is the number one rushing zone – a slalom around tourists who are constantly taking pictures and walking too slow. Only yesterday I realised that funny, noteworthy or explosive stories have taken place at the Hofburg for centuries. Take the so-called wet nurses tax, for example: In 1900, court official Freiherr von Wetschl, well-known for his notorious thriftiness, introduced a seasonal fee of 50 Krone for each pram in the Volksgarten. In April 2011, a huge pillow-fight was organized in the inner courtyard of the palace. In August 1848, the aristocrat Karoline von Perin-Gradenstein founded the first Viennese democratic women’s association in the Volksgarten. And the square Michaelerplatz was the first place Europe-wide where lilacs, hyacinths and tulips were planted. The open-air exhibition “GeschichtenOrt Hofburg” consists of 20 stops which are scattered across the whole area and mention memorable events. They should provide us Viennese with a new approach to the topography of this venue. Thank you – in my case, it worked.

Wishing you a curious week

Enjoying Leftovers at Süßes Eck
You can’t buy happiness – but chocolate! Today, the best places are the two charming stores of the small confectioner’s “Confiserie zum Süßen Eck”. Since they’ll start their summer break tomorrow, they are selling all of their loose chocolate treats at half price. This is called “Noagerl-Naschen”: A leftovers meal for chocolate lovers. Fresh cream truffles, French cream nougat, creative Spanish chocolate, sweets and liquorice are waiting behind the glass counter. You won’t break out in a sweat despite the huge selection because the temperature is wonderfully cool in here. And everything is delicious – since it’s made from chocolate ;-)

mamabule Pop-Up Store
Mamabule is the name of a former village in Botswana – and the eponym of an online store full of handmade treasures from Africa. At the moment, you can buy them in a pop-up store as well – taking a look definitely pays off! The Raku pottery, made from African earth, is particularly attractive. The store offers crockery and colourful decorative objects such as fishes on stands – rainbow fish in African, so to speak ;-) Also very pretty: The hand-painted or hand-printed cushions, fabric and tea towels with cheerful, simple themes and stunningly beautiful patterns. The sight of them is enough to brighten your spirits!

Sound of Wine
A different kind of wine fair: Where normally trendy people shake their hips to underground beats, you can taste wines bearing eloquent names such as “Black Betty” and “Tears of Joy” tonight. Or get “Rosy Cheeks” from the sparkling Pinot Noir of the same name ;-) More than 30 winemakers, amongst them “Domäne Wachau” and “Punk’s finest”, have brought all kinds of delicacies from their cellars to the “Grelle Forelle”. The sandwich makers “Pastrami Baby” line your stomach for the tasting, and afterwards it is time to dance through the night. Far away from a stiff attitude – wine is young, sexy and for everyone!

Block-Party
The upper end of the street Reindorfgasse in the 15th district stands for a wild and appealing combination of shopping, art, fashion, bikes and nerd stuff. Today, the local bar heroes and heroines are throwing a block-party. It starts in the early afternoon in the garden restaurant of the hip concept store Block 44 with coffee and coconut balls, accompanied by excellent Calypso DJ sounds. The closing night of resident artist Andreas Fränzl will be celebrated here too. Metaware, a Mecca for hipsters and geeks, sells hot goods with fan culture elements for nerds. They also have a Nintendo-Barbie-Mashup-Machine – whatever that is ;-)

 Christine Kaufmann
“Wesentlich Weiblich Wunderbar”
Dancing, retreating into inner silence and letting one’s creativity run free – during her one-day seminar for women, artist Christine Kaufmann passes on everything she loves. She supports the participants in immersing themselves in their very own female power and emerging strengthened. In a guided tour into the inner self, powerful and healing images of one’s own femininity appear. Then, those inner visions will be expressed by painting which results in a personal image of power. In addition, everyone draws strength for herself from the creative and benevolent female power of the group. Nice!

Goodball Summer Party
Although it is about football, this summer party, which includes a charity football tournament, is even for those who refuse to watch the European championship a great way to chill out! Apart from the terrific location, which is normally not freely accessible, many fantastic concerts will take place today. The Jewish sports centre – extremely relaxing with its huge lawn and a pool – offers a stage for singer-songwriter Mika Vember, followed by the hip duo “A Life A Song A Cigarette”. After that, the band “The Crispies”, at the moment considered an insider tip, will rock the stage.

Culinary journey along the Silk Road
Until the 13th century, spices, silk and porcelain as well as merchants, scholars, religions and ideas travelled on the legendary Silk Road from east to west, from the Mediterranean to East Asia and the other way round. Today, the association “Kulturbrücke” lets us experience the old caravan road again – namely in a culinary way. A wide range of delicacies from Mongolia, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Iran, Georgia and Buryatia will be offered for free. The cooks, all of them natives, will not only prepare their national dishes, but also provide information about the history and preparation.

The Museum of Military History takes its visitors on a journey through time back to the Middle Ages: Feel like a damsel dancing to medieval tunes with the group “Eulenspiel” or drooling over noble warriors participating in the big knight’s tournament. Jugglers, basket-makers, armourers – the exhibitors and craftspeople will provide you with an insight into times long past. Countless stalls sell different products and the historical wandering bakery offers baked goods as in the olden days. Besides, the whole event is plastic-free! And those who attend the market dressed in medieval clothes don’t pay any entrance fee.

Otto Wagner: Steinhof
When it opened in 1907, the nursing home “Am Steinhof” was Europe’s biggest and most modern mental hospital. The “mentally ill” relatives of the European financial aristocracy and high nobility came here for treatment. During today’s guided tour you can discover these fascinating premises. The tour starts in the management building. To finish off, guide Walter Juraschek will take you through the recreation area “Steinhofgründe” to the climax of Otto Wagner’s architectural oeuvre: the church “Kirche am Steinhof”. It is considered the most important sacral creation of art nouveau. The meeting point is the foyer of the management building of Steinhof.

Snarky Puppy
Wow, with the gig of the unorthodox multi-musician-combo “Snarky Puppy”, the conclusion of the JazzFest is granting us a real highlight! Since the group was founded more than ten years ago, it has consisted of a (changing) collective of about 40 musicians. The styles funk, afro and soul overlap in a peaceful way and are accompanied by jazz horns and gifted world music voices. Anyhow, Snarky Puppy is the living proof that many cooks do under no circumstances spoil the broth – the combo’s sound consists of so many rich layers! Which members will go on tour is a surprise until the end. Smart guitar wizard Marc Ribot will definitely be on stage tonight. Magic!

Piber meets Vienna
After the Fete Imperiale in the Riding School, the jumping horses are now on vacation in the countryside and the offspring of the stud Piber are on excursion in Vienna. The summer programme (tickets from €12) shows young stallions that have only romped about mountain pastures so far, dams with their foals and historic harnesses with original carriages. The youngsters romp around almost every morning in the Winter Riding School. The daily foals run in the Burggarten is particularly nice! When the weather is nice, you can visit the young horses (for free) in their green children’s room – meet & greet with the offspring, so to speak ;-)

 Edson Chagas
Found Not Taken – Edson Chagas
Finds, presented in an artistic way: For his series of photos “Found Not Taken”, Edson Chagas strolled through the streets of African and European cities in order to collect objects that others had thrown away and to rearrange them in front of house facades and walls as sculptural graphical symbols. A way of artistic recycling: Per se worthless articles are given a new value and are consumed again in the form of pictures. This playful-poetic photo series received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. Now it is being shown in Austria for the first time. The opening takes place today – followed by a party in the garden.

AlexStadler Fabric Experiments
Designer Alexandra Stadler always listens to music while designing or knitting. The music contributes directly to her works, which is why the tag of each trendy piece in her mini shop mentions the related music. For this summer, the native Tyrolean composed linen yarn pullovers while listening to Benjamin Clementine. They are loose-knit, asymmetrical and knitted sideways which makes them fall beautifully. Bluish grey sets the tone of AlexStadler’s pieces, with flashes of mustard or white in-between. Apart from experimental knitting, the designer also offers dresses and bags. Very chic, very avant-garde!

Alto – Südtiroler Trattoria
It has been a long time ago that restaurateurs successfully installed themselves in the former home of Dornbach’s “Waldschnepfe”. Until now! The old vault has been renovated in a tasteful way and a South Tyrolean trattoria has moved in. The waiters are friendly and quick, the pizza crunchy and thin, the dough is, if requested, made out of rye, and the toppings include South Tyrolean specialities such as grey cheese, bacon and grapes. The antipasti plate with brittle bread goes well with the wine too. It’s no typical summer restaurant since it doesn’t have a garden, but sitting on the roofed terrace during a warm thundery shower can be quite cosy ;-)
