"Heya Girls!"
Isn’t it wonderful when the city gradually gets more and more devoid of people in summer? Finally no more parking space problems, the inbox doesn’t get flooded with emails every day – but there are still lots of exciting events for those who stayed home. The prize for the most amazing summer program of the year clearly goes to Volkshochschule. With the VHS summer card, it’s actually possible to take part in 1,200 courses for half the price during July and August! No matter if you want to learn calligraphy from Chinese artist Yonghui Yi (cover), learn how to make jeans via upcycling into a Hipbag, participate in a writing workshop, or finally, finally learn to dance Lindy Hop – the choice is overwhelming. The summer card costs 34 € and then you have the cheapest possible access to language classes, health- and fitness courses, cooking classes, art classes or classic further education themes like economics or computer. And whoosh, there the good resolutions (“finally do nothing”) disappear into the summer slump.

Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Jan Fabre: Belgian Rules / Belgium Rules
With drums and trumpets, music by Jacques Brel, a live-interpretation of the Manneken Pis and several cases of beer, the great theatre maker and seducer Jan Fabre delves deep into the treasure chests and waste bins of his home country to pull out every conceivable cliché for the world premiere of Belgian Rules / Belgium Rules. You can see the dance production, which has received standing ovations on tuesday, again today and on Friday. Fabre celebrates a visually stunning, exuberant, anti-nationalistic feast in honour of Europe. And as is becoming for a Belgian evening: chips included.

Lu.St Fashion
Favourite pieces that help the owner show her true colours and make her happy – that’s how Lu Steiner defines her fashion goal. And that’s exactly the kind of esprit that her eye-catching dresses, light tunics and sexy jumpsuits radiate. The prints range from cheerful to garish, the cuts are summery-fluttery to daring-form-fitting. “Never under & never overdressed” is he guiding principle – each of the fairly produced pieces can easily be worn with flip-flops or be made dinner date-fit with high heels. Now you can’t only buy them in the showroom in Perchtoldsdorf, but also on Mariahilfer Straße!

Franzobel reads at MQ
Since Franzobel and CitySpotterGirl are from the same no-where village, this tip is more or less a must-do! Today, Franzobel reads from his new book at the “O-Töne Literaturfestival” in the atmospheric main courtyard of MuseumsQuartier. For his book “Floß der Medusa” (The Raft of the Medusa), acclaimed by critics, the Upper Austrian author has watched sailor films, took boat trips, and fasted. He tells the true story of 15 of the originally 147 people who survived on the open seas for two weeks after the sinking of the frigate Medusa in 1816. Entry free of charge!

BrazuKa Club with Celia Mara
She’s a punk of world music and Austria’s most brilliant Brazilian ;-) Celia Mara has a big voice, her guitar vibrates, the catchy songs get stuck in your head and rhythm takes over. Today, the exceptional musician will fire up the crowd at Schwarzberg with her urban world music, there’s capoeira to loosen up, percussions, and Brazilian food. And Afro-Brazilian priestess and percussionist Mae Beth de Oxum will play a sambada de coco, cheered on with drums, clapping and singing. Hot and with a great deal of heart!

Quiet night hours in St. Ruprecht
Vienna’s oldest church is right in the middle of the city at the edge of the trendy neighbourhood called Bermuda Triangle. The current building dates back to the 12th century and its simplicity is quite unique in Vienna. And the church also has a unique offer: Every Friday between 21:00 and midnight, the house of God is turned into an open “night-church”. Illuminated only by candles, it offers all people – regardless of religious affiliation or descent – peace and quiet. This gives the unusual place an impressive meditative power, which helps you leave everyday life behind in no time.

Piber meets Vienna
After the Fete Imperiale, the jumping horses have gone on holiday in the countryside. In return, the offspring from the stud farm Piber have gone on summer camp in Vienna. The summer program will show young stallions that have only been romping around on alpine pastures so far, mares with their little foals and historical harnesses with original carriages. The highlight is the daily outdoor-foal enclosure in Burggarten! In good weather, you can admire the young ones with their elegant mummies (for free) in their green nursery – meet & greet with the youngsters

Party of Lights at Alte Donau
Aww look, how romantic! From 20:00, a fleet decorated with Chinese lanterns will cruise down Alte Donau, rental boats from the many rental places are included just as well as privately owned boats and – yes, really – a group of Venetian gondolas! Music is in the air, in-between you can recharge culinarily and the darker it gets, the more beautifully kitschy is the whole thing. The evening’s highlight is the display of fireworks in the area of the Gänsehäufl from circa 21:45. In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed until 29 July. Tip: Reserve rental boats in time!

Guided tour in Hermesvilla
„Villa with lovely view, imperial, partly furnished, 1350 sqm. liv. area.” Amid Lainzer Tiergarten, the former imperial hunting grounds, Empress Elizabeth’s “Castle of Dreams” is situated. It was a present for her by Emperor Franz Joseph who hoped to thus persuade his travel-fond wife to spend more time in Vienna. Which, as we know, didn’t work. To get to the villa, you have to take a long walk through the shadowy park. Afterwards, there is a guided tour today, where you will learn about the building’s history as well as biographical facts about the famous eccentric Empress.

Cabaret festival
As we know, some people like to go laugh in the cellar. But whoever prefers to laugh in public will go to Rathaus (City Hall) today. During the Cabaret Festival, there’s two gigs that will have you in stitches. Kicking it off today are Viktor Gernot with a „Best of stories and songs“ & Christof Spörk with „Am Ende des Tages“ (“At the End of the Day”). Fortunately there’s also a few funny ladies present this year, including Nadja Maleh and the great Bavarian cabaret artist Monika Gruber. As warm-up newcomers will be performing before the stars.

We love! The Awareness & Consciousness-collections by designer Christiane Gruber are of softly flowing material that is bleached and dyed by her personally. This leads to unconventional, spontaneous patterns and special effects on the fabrics. Shakespeare in the Park
Things are getting lively today in idyllic Pötzipark when Shakespeare’s Shrew, sporting a flower-power-look of the 1970s, is getting tamed. Around Pötzleinsdorfer Castle, in the midst of giant trees, old lake grottos, derelict bird houses and Ringtheater-figurines, at today’s Parktheater premiere, everything revolves around merchant Baptista’s two attractive daughters. The younger one has an abundance of admirers, but Baptista insists that the older must marry first – but she’s quite a battleaxe ;-) A wonderful open-air theatre treat!

Cooking class on Summerstage
Cooking in the open air – now that’s an unusual cooking class. In the urban setting on the “summerstage” at Danube Canal, the food is first cooked and then eaten together. There are weekly workshops until 29 August organized by the Volkshochschulen. Conveniently, they are taking place after work, from 5 pm onwards. The food that is cooked alternates between Indian or Thai food or sometimes even Caribbean snacks. Today, Sangita Nebel demonstrates how healthy curries are prepared. Next Week, it’s Indian snacks and finger-food.

Bike-rescue by the Greens
For years the Green’s bike-rescue has been touring the whole city, today it stops by at Gänsehäufel. Experts examine every bike, then they offer services and small repairs – adjusting gears and breaks, checking wearing parts and, if necessary, change the tube in the tire. They make lists of bigger defects and inform people about the closest repair facilities. And what’s nice: it’s free of charge! In August, it’s the turn of the districts within Gürtel. In the past 12 years, 25,000 (!) bicycles could be repaired that way.

Sarah Maria
Now, “Platzkonzert”, a concert on a public square, sounds a lot like folk music that is forced on tourists, but this is not what’s happening at WUK at all ;-) Because it’s actually a nice little open-air-setting in the courtyard with free live-acts. Today, Andalusia fan Sarah Maria from Mühlviertel performs with Anatolian guitarist Alper Yakin, creating a sensual, sometimes captivatingly soft sound. Sarah Maria sings and plays old Spanish coplas, Mexican ranchera songs and Argentinian tangos, as well as some of her own songs. Some Fado, plus Flamenco... simply el gran sentimiento!

Liebstöckl
They didn’t move far – only away from quiet Alszeile to the livelier Hernalser Hauptstraße. But on the other hand, the “new” Liebstöckl” is now sporting a modern, bright and airy look. Richard Peterseil’s kitchen concept hasn’t changed though and still follows the same ideas: traditional Austrian dishes, freshest ingredients, no Gigi. Meaning for example strudel with greaves, deboned fried chicken in little baskets or a really hearty pork roast. For lunchtime, there are nice menus – and if you want, you can order lunch until 9:30 and have it delivered home or to the office.
