"Heya Girls!"
Since Corona, going for walks has become a popular activity in Vienna. (Which we should definitely keep!) If you're getting a bit bored of the same old routes through the neighbourhood, this week you’ll get “walking with added value”. You can not only stroll through spring, but also into the future of Vienna. The theaternyx uses headphones to take us to the Vienna of 2050: guided by a female voice, we walk as a group through a part of the city. And before the inner eye, a new view opens up, possibilities for shaping the next thirty years emerge. How can we imagine a sustainable and just life in the city? How do we want to live together? As you move through a utopian Vienna, you immerse yourself in the soundtrack of the future city – exciting and surprisingly positive. The walk “über.morgen Wien” starts at the Planetarium in the Vienna Prater, the destination is the WUK. True to the motto: Let's exercise our utopia muscles!

Wishing you an optimistic week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Start: Planetarium, Oswald-Thomas-Platz 1, 1020 Vienna. 21-24 April. 20 €. Web

This year's speakers include Philipp Blom, philosopher and historian, indigenous activist Juma Xipaia, Charlotte Mijeon, anti-nuclear activist, Thomas Waitz, MEP and organic farmer, and slam poet Katharina Wenty – all exciting!  Federica Ferrari
Federica Ferrari
A woman who likes fast cars, according to her name ;-) But actually she is a wonderful jazz singer who has Italian roots. Federica Ferrari comes from Venice, where she sang in the gospel choir and was regularly invited to the Christmas concert in the Vatican – but gospel never quite became hers. Love then brought Ferrari to Vienna. While studying jazz singing, she met Bertl Mayer and his mouth harmonica. In the meantime, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass and drums were added: the jazz ensemble was completed. Today at Sargfabrik, you can listen in here!

Pop-up Store
Many things are easier when you do them together. The four women Flavia Soares, Alices Lindenau, Marianne Villalobos and Natalia Sander come from different areas of design and have joined forces to unite their dreams and strengths. Creative female power with a focus on sustainability. Throughout April, they will be showcasing their colourful works at a pop-up store: fashion, ceramics, jewellery and abstract art are on display and for sale. Lazy Ceramics, for example, presents beautiful clay vessels for everyday use – including an original ceramic coffee filter.

Trio Mara
Women's songs from Kurdistan! The Trio Mara consists of three women who draw from the full: with their experiences, their background, their culture and their musical skills. Their songs are about forced marriage, the destinies of women but also about love. However, these songs were handed down by men, as it was forbidden for women to sing in public for a long time. In Turkey, from where the singer Sakina Teyna fled to Austria in 2006, the Kurdish language is still considered a taboo and its use leads to persecution. A little teaser can be found here.

Open House at Kempelenpark
What do you do with a 30,000 sqm commercial site that is standing idle? Of course: interim use! From the outside, you'd hardly guess what's going on behind the façade of the former Siemens offices. Creative minds and pioneering spirits are enlivening the concrete building with their innovative concepts: the food entrepreneurs Herd are serving up better food solutions in the Open Kitchen and in the re:use Hub the material-nomads are working on the use of old building materials. Today is open house – 40 creatives, 20 studios and 3 hubs can be visited on tours or on your own.

ZukunftsErwachen Festival
Sometimes visions are needed. And so – after years of vacancy – a visionary urban farming concept was developed for the former Haschahof. Sustainability, circular economy and urban nutrition are to be rethought in the historic farm in Favoriten. Start-ups such as mushroom producers Hut & Stiel or Blün, which grows fish and vegetables via aquaponics, are already on board. This weekend the Zukunftshof will be presented – on the open house day they have a big market of diversity, DIY bicycle service, culinary treats and herb walks along the Liesing brook.

Flea Market Obkirchergasse
Here we go! Roll up your sleeves, clean out, sort through, pack boxes and get rid of old stuff. A worthy place to free yourself of all the unused junk is still the good old flea market. The spring flea market in Obkirchergasse is a must-go for all hobby traders and vintage fans. This is where contacts are made, stories told, stuff is traded and exchanged and maybe even some profit is made. Even if you won't get rich in the process, it's a wonderfully liberating feeling when you finally have room for something new again – and may stock up on some new bric-a-brac ;-)

Vienna Refugee Ball
The topic of refugees is more than hot at the moment – and so the Refugee Ball, postponed to April because of Corona, will take place despite the Ukraine war. After all, the net proceeds of the ball go to Integrationshaus and exclusively benefit projects for refugees. International musicians bring a multi-culti atmosphere to the dance floor. EsRAP and 5/8erl in Ehr'n will perform as well as Matho & Vienna Dancehall Orchestra. This year's Refugee Ball will be opened by the Iranian drummer Yashar. A gesture for peace, solidarity and humanity.

For there is a lot to explore: On Saturday and Sunday, artists open their doors at 30 locations in the 2nd and 20th districts and invite you to stroll through modern art and design. The special thing about this event is the uncomplicated and personal contact with all the creatives. You can visit backyard studios, artists' flats and workshops, and discover ceramics as well as oil paintings, jewellery or textiles. Hiking map here!

Attention: two days of pure mindfulness! In the studio rooms of “Raum in Raum” you can take your personal me-time at the Mindful Salon. The focus here is on conscious interaction with oneself, nature and one's fellow human beings. You can sit back comfortably with a fair cappuccino, browse or make mindful purchases – such as artistic enamel mugs, fine art prints or yoga calendars. Particularly soothing for the soul is the creative workshop “Activating Sources of Strength”, where you can experiment with various natural materials and recharge your batteries. Great!

Art on Fashion
Art can be worn. Even in everyday life. To prove this, 6 visual artists, 2 designers and 1 gallery owner got together and realised an unusual project. The artists' artworks were printed on fabrics and transformed into wearable but unusual fashion by km/a and Langer Modedesign. For four days, you now have the opportunity to test and buy this liaison of fashion and art: How does it feel to be wrapped up in a work of art? It goes without saying that you will be buying absolutely unique pieces that will make you the centre of attention ;-)

 Klimt/Albertina
Gustav Klimt: The Drawings
It was exactly 125 years ago that Gustav Klimt left the Künstlerhaus with like-minded people in 1897 to found a new artists' association as the spearhead of the avant-garde: the Vienna Secession. Since last week, he has been back at the Künstlerhaus now – the Albertina Modern shows works that usually take a back seat next to the “Kiss” and the “Golden Adele”. Unjustly so, because as a phenomenal draughtsman Gustav Klimt occupies a unique position worldwide. On display are around 100 of Gustav Klimt's best drawings, including the studies of all the artist's major works.

The more it comes the more it goes
Wander through the city as part of a performance and immerse yourself in the history of the city by means of memorable squares and prominent places: just another way to make history come alive! This is the idea of theatre director David Maayan. Today he leads a performative walk through the 1st and 2nd districts, where you can learn more about the Holocaust and National Socialism up close – from a different perspec-tive than leaning over a history book. Famous places like the Schulhof, which was part of the Judenstadt until 1421, are fixed points of the performance.

Asparagus from Alfred Mühl Farm
The best detox cure in spring is to eat asparagus. If you want a very special asparagus, you have to go to the outskirts of the city to Aderklaa these days. The secret tip is called: Bauernhof Mühl. The weather was a bit cold, but by now the asparagus is cut every day – and every day, even on Sundays and holidays, you can buy it fresh in the beautiful farm shop. Of course, there are both the green and the white spears, and despite the outstanding taste, the price here is most pleasing. Soon there will also be strawberries again – and magnificent peonies.

Symposium: Lobau must live
The Lobau must continue to be saved. This time it is not a tunnel that threatens the National Park, but water could become scarce in the future. “Thanks” to climate change! Scientists will now report on the manifold backgrounds for the increasing dryness of the floodplain landscape on the basis of their current findings for two days in the form of a symposium at the Natural History Museum. In addition to the dramatic changes leading to siltation and the loss of biodiversity, possible measures to save this natural gem will also be presented.

Little Shop of Horrors
From Broadway to the Seestadt: After Dracula, things continue darkly at Kulturgarage in the 22nd district. With the cult musical “Little Shop of Horrors” another play comes to the stage in the Seestadt giving us the shivers. In the process, we meet with an ever-growing plant that has a very strange appetite. The horror shop plant captivates the audience, devours whole men and bursts its flowerpot. Bizarre and more topical than ever. The horror musical, partly staged as a puppet show, asks the question: How do we actually treat nature?

Danielle Spera “Le Chaim!”
Question: Why is the Jewish New Year celebrated in autumn? Why do believers move into a leaf hut for Sukkot? And why do people stomp their feet loudly in the synagogue on a particular holiday? In her new, very personal book, Danielle Spera answers these and other questions about Jewish holidays. Most holidays commemorate seminal events in Jewish history – and yet are celebrated joyfully and delightfully. Photos, holiday experiences and favourite recipes round off the book. And you’ll learn what “Le Chaim!” means.
