"Heya Girls!"
Next week, you presumably have to do without sleep, any private appointments, and high heels! The Vienna Design Week is in town and shakes things up with exciting exhibitions, workshops, and side-events all over the place! Especially in this year’s focus district Neubau, which is also where the Festival centre is based this time: the former Sophienspital is a city-oasis par excellence, until now an inaccessible area with an enclosed parkland. From here, you can dash through the city, almost 200 special exhibitions, open studios, pop-ups, and secret “Passionswege” welcome some aesthetic exploring. Karak is firing Raku tiles designed by artists every day, designer Miki Martinek hosts a water tasting, the Japanese artist Toru Watarai gives insights into Ikebana, Alexa Brauner leads a tour through Brillantengrund, and you can travel to the Opera in Munich via VR-glasses and meet musicians, dancers, and great singers there. I’d say: busy schedule!

Wishing you a wild week,

viennacontemporary 2018
Anyone who won’t make it to the Biennale in Venice this year can now dive into flashy and top-current art over here. Because Austria’s biggest international art fair starts today at Marx Halle. As many as 118 galleries, from the local Hilger to Lamb Arts in London, and institutions from 27 countries are joining in, and you can admire the works of hundreds of artists. Plus: great side events like wicked talks and live performances, cinema screenings, and guided theme round tours for art fans in a hurry. So, eyes wide open and get to it ;-)

Waves Vienna Festival
A festival where there’s a lot to explore, music-wise: centered around WUK, the entire 9th district gets rocking and vibrating with sound. More than 100 (inter)national bands perform on 9 stages. Including exciting newcomers but also veterans like Mrs. “Seven Seconds” Neneh Cherry, the British The Go!-team, and the local band Mile me Deaf. Particularly cool: they also play at off-locations within the radius of a few minutes’ walk, like at Modeschule Michelbeuern. Off to the potential hit concert-, performance-, and workshop potpourri!

Closing Sale at Local
When a fashion store closes or (like in this case) moves, it’s usually good news for your wallet as well. Or even spectacularly good: at Local, prices are now dropping up to 90 percent (!) because of their move from Zollergasse to Lindengasse at the end of September. They are selling great, unusual, and local avantgarde fashion produced in the atelier of the owner, designer Sasa Fabjan. Up for grabs are extravagantly cut pieces from her FIN archive collection, for instance, plus some stuff from Viennese label Doychinoff, like innovative woman’s suits.

Long Day of Refugees
Still a current issue, unfortunately: on today’s Long Day of Refugees, everyone can explore the topic of refugees and asylum and learn more about it in the course of numerous free events. The theatre solo “Ein Staatenloser” at Weltmuseum, for instance, shows how censorship forces an Iranian artist to flee his country, the Kunst Haus Wien hosts an intercultural Photo Walk along Danube Canal, refugees and Viennese cook together at CORE Zentrum, and a refugee home in the 2nd district invites you to a tournament of table football called “Wuzeln für die Menschlichkeit”.

Ayurvedic Yoga Dinner
Vata, Pitta, or Kapha? That’s the question in Ayurveda! That is why before today’s Yoga & Ayurveda evening (at the pretty 12 Karma Food!), you get a questionnaire to determine your type. The evening focused on the three “Doshas” then starts with a yoga session, afterwards they serve a healthy and tasty Ayurvedic 3-course-menu. During the dinner, you’ll learn fascinating things about the powers of the Doshas and which foods and spices should definitely be included in your personal diet. Great for everyone who’d like to dive into the world of Ayurveda once!

Costume and film props flea market
During September, you hardly know which flea market to visit first, but this one sounds like fun! It’s hosted by “Requisite”, a small living room-cultural association that has made camp in the former requisites’ storage of Allegro Film in Krummgasse. That’s why today, there are cool film props from the last Allegro film productions like costumes, furniture, tableware, picture frames and carpets, apart from the standard flea market knick-knack. The physical well-being of all bargain-huntresses is being taken care of as well, with the props bar offering refreshments.

Nice Price Days at amour fou
The bikini season is indeed truly over now but it’s always lingerie season! It really pays of these days to drop by Astrid Bleier’s teeny-tiny but delightful lingerie shop for some fine underwear. Madame “amour fou” is busy making room for sustainable-cosy tops and pyjamas right now, meaning a lot of items have to go. That’s why there are very favourable prices until Saturday: bras for 39.90, panties for 19.90 and swimwear fashion reduced up to 70 percent. Included here are for example colourful, sexy lingerie by Dora Larsen and extraordinary lace lingerie by Else.

Theaterfest at Volkstheater
Some hefty brouhaha from the understage to the canteen! The Volkstheater allows visitors to every corner of the house today – even a personal audience with director Anna Badora is possible! To kick it off, ensemble members perform the first article of the Austrian constitution (however that works!), followed by a “Bildet Banden!”-dance flash mob on the theatre’s forecourt. Afterwards there are stage tours, a costume auction, workshops, and David Bowie karaoke. And a preview-show with a foretaste of almost all the current productions. Super!

Heritage Day
On a discovery tour in your own city: for today’s Heritage Day, many hidden treasures that are usually closed to the public can be visited all over Austria – more than 50 locations in Vienna alone. And all for free! Particularly intriguing are the places that are usually hard to get into: for example the long-lost artist’s wardrobe of the former Boulevard Theater (now a shoe shop) at Annahof or Emperor Franz’s study at Hofburg, which will also be made accessible for the first time today. And that’s why the entry is free for the National Library today as well!

Ceramics & Porcelain
Better make room in kitchen cabinet and display case ;-) Because Augarten turns into a china shop for 3 days again. Around 50 artists from six countries gather at the ceramics market in and in front of Palais Augarten, where they present their elegant, funny or unusual beauties from consumer ceramics to jewellery. Apart from renowned exhibitors like Bibi Beranek with her original women’s figurines, there are also exciting young artists selling their works. After looking and shopping, you can participate in tours and workshops at the porcelain manufactory.

Blueprint workshop „Keep it blue!”
To avoid confusion now: this workshop is not about the “traditional costume-y”-blueprint but about a technique called cyanotype. But this, too, is a wonderful way of designing textiles! It works like this: a chemical solution is applied to a fabric, then the desired motif is placed onto the ground and exposed to ultra-violet light. After washing-out, the motif remains light, while the exposed parts have changed to a deep blue. You can try this out with cloth bags and hairbands today, or by request with textiles you bring yourself as well.

Conference: The web that we want
Does anybody still remember what life was like without the internet? 3 million Austrians are on Facebook every day, the smartphone is our constant companion anyway. But this raises questions: who decides what news we see online? What do the big platforms know about us? How can we make sure that online discussions stay fair and respectful? This is exactly what today’s Digital Conference is all about – with interesting lectures, for instance by lawyer & privacy advocate Max Schrems or the founder of the terribly funny Tagespresse. Entry is free, but only with registration.

Hands Off The Wall
Women power! The side wall of the house at Yppenplatz 4 probably wouldn’t have stayed white for long anyway. All the better, then, that it may be artfully designed during the Female Street Art & Graffiti Festival – perfectly legal ;-) You can still look over the shoulders of international street artists there until Tuesday. Plus, there’s a “Paint Jam” with 16 Austrian artists taking place on Saturday. By the way, behind “Hands Off The Wall” are the internationally-known Viennese artist Chinagirl Tile and top restaurateur Friederike Seiler from the venue “What the Duck” at Yppenplatz no. 4 .

Day of Coffee
Interesting not just for caffeine-junkies but also for history buffs: on the occasion of the Day of Coffee, there are free city tours today all about the topic of coffee. Starting from Judenplatz, you can join five different tours that deal with topics like free time, politics or work at the coffeehouse. Or you can trace the footsteps of modern coffeehouse architecture. At the end of the city tour, there are some interesting exhibition items of Kaffee-Museum to be admired and you can – duh! – get a boost in the form of invigorating (Meinl-) coffee. For free!

Svavar Knútur
Aw, a real Icelandic bear with a surprisingly high and gentle voice! And Svavar Knútur also has a great sense of humour: “You know, I'm the broccoli of Singer-Songwriters. Not the sexiest of the vegetables, but veeeery good for you!” is what the likable singer says about himself ;-) True, because he always manages with ease to captivate and enchant his audience from the first moment on. He presents his songs in the most touching way and in between them, he tells the most absurd stories and jokes, spiced up with a good portion of dark Icelandic humour. Listen in!

Bruegel: Once in a lifetime
Yes, seeing this summit of masterpieces is probably a once-in a lifetime chance: Pieter Bruegel the E. is being honoured at Kunsthistorisches Museum with an extraordinary showing. To be seen are about half of the works (painting, drawings and graphics) of the greatest master of the 16th century! Many of the international loans travel very rarely, numerous works are leaving their home places for the very first time for the exhibition starting today. A unique opportunity to see the works spread across the world in one show, for instance the “Tower of Babel”, “The Beekeepers” or “The Bird Thief”.

Actress Ursula Strauss shows her private side today. At Thalia, she opens her family album and in her recently published picture & story book “Warum ich nicht mehr fliegen kann und wie ich gegen Zwergen kämpfte” (why I can’t fly anymore and how I fought the dwarves), she remembers her happy childhood, cacao and cosy blanket, strange encounters, her youth and important career stages. She reflects with great openness and clarity on good as well as bad times, on personal pain thresholds, and explains why it is important to speak up.

Wear it Right
An important topic that is unfortunately as uncomfortable as some too-tight trousers: as part of the #kinodenktweiter events at Gartenbaukino, they’re showing the film “The True Cost” The documentary demonstrates the devastating effects of the modern “fast fashion” industry. Afterwards, blogger Madeleine Alizadeh (dariadaria) hosts an expert panel featuring the topics material, fair work, production conditions and recycling. Then in the foyer, you have the chance to meet and enter into conversation with the guests and speakers and find out more at the different booths.

Garden for all
As far as plants and their use are concerned, even hobby-gardeners live and learn. Today, there is the chance to broaden your green knowledge by a few (wild) herbs: in her workshop at a community garden, herbal educator Karoline Grün demonstrates what kind of stuff you can produce with comfrey, ribwort, milfoil & co. The medicinal herbs that grow on site are presented and their effects explained, and afterwards, it’s off to the production of simple tinctures, teas or ointments for your home medicine chest. For that, please bring two small jam jars, cutting board, knife and mortar!

Dear god, that’s beautifully colourful! Entering the nice, brand-new store near Mariahilfer Straße, your gaze is caught by the brightly coloured cloth bags, notebooks, etuis and fish. Dingelstedt3
Usually, you only have church innkeepers in the countryside, but now we have a new one in Vienna too. And it’s a great one! On the church square of the impressive brick building Maria vom Siege, Eduard Peregi (from Gasthaus Quell and Eduard) has snatched the closed “On Sud” and has turned it into a really joyful Gasthaus together with two friends. They offer Viennese cuisine with a creative twist: Veltliner veal lights, various mushrooms with bread dumplings, cauliflower-Gröstl or the funny dish “Stadt, Land, Fluss”, basically a Viennese edition of Surf & Turf. Nice: very short waiting time for the lunch menu!
