"Heya Girls!"
A bunch of keys with a history! With a very serious history. Because technically, everyone should feel safe after closing their own apartment door from the inside. Unfortunately, this is not at all the case: right now, every 5th woman in Austria is affected by violence from their husband or partner! To provide safety to women looking for a safe haven, the first women’s shelter was opened in Vienna in 1978 (in the picture: the original bunch of keys). Now, 40 years later, there’s an exhibition dedicated to these important institutions. Titled “In the beginning, we were very much in love”, it shows harrowing as well as encouraging stories of affected women based on interviews and personal objects; plus women’s shelter employees are called before the curtain. They, too, are often subject to stress, threats, clichés and prejudices. Ultimately, the topic is thought-provoking: about the perception of women, unequal power structures and about how much you yourself are willing to put up with for love. Hm…

Wishing you a harmonious week,

Cherry Tree Festival
Soon the pink-rosy colour orgy currently bestowed on us by the blooming cherry trees will be over. For a couple of years now, you’ve been able to admire the magnificent crimson “Kazura” at Danube Island as well, where a group of Japanese artists designed a cherry tree grove in 2002. Today, they celebrate the yearly festival there, including a Japanese program with Mochi-Tsuki (pounding of rice), traditional dance and singing, Kyudo-show (archery), Haiku-reading, and workshops from origami to manga-drawing. Anything missing? Bingo, the tea ceremony ;-)

HEMA
Oh dear, yet another shop full of things a woman doesn’t need but really, really wants to have ;-) The first branch of the Dutch chain HEMA was already founded in Amsterdam in 1926, now Vienna has one too (two, actually, if you count the small, also new shop at Westbahnhof!). You can now shop for 10,000 everyday-products like home accessories, writing materials, household stuff, beauty products, and cute party supplies at the store on MaHü. Quite nice, because it’s not too expensive, pretty colourful, and produced by HEMA itself. Have fun browsing!

Ich Zarah
“I’m a political idiot”, was Zarah Leander’s response to the question how she could have possibly allowed the Nazis to make her into an artist icon during the Third Reich. Star-author Franzobbel has dedicated his new theater play to the “wild flesh of the last diva” by having an actress and a director bring Zarah Leander’s biography to the stage. This results in a fiery dialogue that blurs the lines between present and past. A thought-proving evening which, accompanied with music, shows the colourful, but also the dark side of Zarah Leander.

Feinstoff # design.popup
Thanks to the summer temperatures, shopping-crazies are tripping over each other in the shopping areas right now. There’s gotta be a more relaxed way! Like today in a small but mighty designer pop-up in Gumpendorfer Straße: 6 labels have gotten together there to flog highlights from their current collections. Including cool gear from recycled men’s dress shirts by MILCH, extravagant stylis-jewellery, fashion by Edith Langer with trendy patterns, pretty LU-design-backpacks and chocolatey “Belgicatesses”! Tonight: late night shopping with live swing music!

Bicycles! A Love Story
Neat new exhibition where bike fans can indulge in their boneshaker infatuation! Whether it be life-size portrait photographs of eccentric 19th century-bicycle pioneers (great styling, fascinating technique!), endearing family snap shots from all over the world, moving moments of cycling history, amusing film clips or rare bicycles, the purpose of the show is mainly this: to be fun! That’s why there are also historical selfie backdrops, music, and velo-food trucks. For the opening, they show a pedal-powered film, accompanied by Tingel Tangel music!

 Vitra
Vitra Sample Sale
Top insider’s tip and terrific opportunity for design-aficionados! In London, people camp outside for this at sub-zero temperatures – and in Vienna too, it’s highly recommended to be there in time. Because the Swiss cult-company Vitra opens its Viennese warehouse! Meaning: you’ll never get the exclusive furniture pieces as cheap as there. Chairs, shelves, lamps, desks, and particularly design classics are given away almost 50% off as stock items in good condition. Including: cult chairs by Eames and Panton. Attention: it’s difficult to find, the address for GPS is Breitenleerstraße 101!

Dance Day at Brotfabrik
Today is International Dance Day and since the usual moves have already been performed a thousand times, there’s new input for shake fans this time! The Caritas organization “Taanz die Toleranz” has organised a dance day at Brotfabrik, with two free workshops and a pretty original performance. They start with a ballet workshop for all (good for warming up and stretching!) with Claire Granier, afterwards you can try the elegant “voguing” with choreographer Karin Cheng, and finally admire the “dogs of all talents” – a show with real puppies and their owners. Nice!

Viennese Wunderl Weekend
Oioioi, shoe connoisseurs get jittery when they hear the word “Wunderl”! Because the chic shop carries amazingly beautiful designer shoes and bags. The only downside for us Viennese: the shoe paradise’s home is near Wiener Neustadt. But: for three days, Wunderl will come to us in the city for a popup and he brings some very tempting stuff with it. Meaning best shoe picks, dear ladies, from slip-on shoes to pumps, from Chloe to Valentino, from new arrival to outlet bargain. And the tempting shoe wonderland is even open on Sunday. Hallelujah!

Let’s talk about money
Now that’s convenient! If the shoe-shopping tip above is enticing you into extensive spending, this opportunity will bring an easier approach to money into your life. At this money-Sunday with Claudia Schwab-Eckl, your own (often harmful to cash flow!) attitude towards financial matters are probed, centred around clearing exercises and the dissolution of convictions like “Money doesn’t make you happy”. The methods used are “Access Tools” and „Movements of the spirit”, plus healing chants are attracting future wealth.

May Day Festival at Böhmischer Prater
It’s a holiday and beautiful weather which mean you just have to go on a getaway! So how about a trip to the somewhat quirky Böhmischer Prater? There, in the Laaer Forest, the start of the warm season is celebrated with a true hustle and bustle – with new attractions, live-music and funny offers. For example, from 13:00 to 14:00 o’clock, you can go on any ride for just 1 euro – from the colourful-swift Caribbean Twister to the slow-paged Lillipop- carousel and the nostalgic rotting horsie merry-go-round. Lisa Stansfield
Now, it’s definitely been quite a while since her first super hit “All Around the World” at the end of the 80s, but Lisa Stansfield has still got it. She has sold millions of albums and has risen from pop-star to queen of British soul music. Her newest song “Billionaire” proves once again just how well the musician knows her craft of song-writing and singing. Effortlessly, she manages to wrap up an entire soap opera in just one song ;-) “It’s about love. It’s about money. The rest is for you to decide for yourself”, is what she says herself. After the cherry blossom festival at Danube Island, here comes some more Japanese-themed stuff in the Newsletter - and in the city ;-) Because there is a lovely Japan-exhibition in Kagran that’s opening today. Scene of the action is the Österreichische Gartenbaumuseum where the group Ikenobo-Ikebana will present something that is an important and highly traditional art in Japan – the arrangement of flowers. Huge but still somewhat hidden! On Friday, the new fancy Imperial Shop opens – at Hofburg at the World Museum, adjacent to the also new Hofburg Info Center. Even as a non-tourist you can hit the store without being bombarded with souvenir kitsch. The selection is really mostly high end and very stylish, ranging from Mühlbauer-hats to Lobmeyr glasses, but you can also find stylish original stuff like Piatnik play cards in Viennese tiles-look or pretty Art Nouveau pattern paper boxes. You won’t get away entirely without Sisi-pillows or Klimt-pencil cases but again – with style!
