editorial

"Heya Girls!"
We're being pretty good already, right? We separate our waste, we don't use plastic bags anymore, we ride our bikes and instead of paper chaos we store a lot of things in the cloud. Unfortunately, this is of little use because our digital lifestyle is heating up the climate more and more. Watching a one-hour video on your smartphone once a week: consumes as much energy each year as two refrigerators. If all the data storage centres in the world were combined in one country: it would be the fifth largest energy consumer in the world. With the motto “Stormy Weather”, artists at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich are currently showing what effects the cloud has on real life. This Saturday there will be a guided tour of the exciting show. And on Sunday, a treeathlon will take place in Vienna for the first time. The proceeds of the charity run will be invested in trees for our city. One running lap is 1.2 km – the more laps are run, the more trees are planted. So that we can become a “forest city” even without Trump ;-)

Wishing you a sustainable week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Daniel Reiter
Vegan After Work
Not only is this young man really handsome, he also cooks with great passion. And tickles the taste of vegetables out of their roots: chef Daniel Reiter has recently opened his purely vegan cooking school “Ziguri” (Austrian dialect for dandelion). He learned what is possible in vegetable cooking with the right tricks in Bali and in Berlin. He will demonstrate how to do good veggie cuisine even in stressful everyday life in the course Vegan After Work today– where only fast and full-value meals make it onto the plate, which make full and (very importantly!) are tasty.

Beyond Bambi
The story of “Bambi”, the orphaned fawn, became a world success through Walt Disney. Almost forgotten is the fact that the Viennese Felix Salten was its inventor. Yes, really! But there is more to the author: as a powerful art critic, journalist and founder of a theatre, he was a central figure of Viennese Modernism around 1900. Posters, photos and letters (for example by Stefan Zweig) from his estate are on display from today. Also on display are Klimt's “Pallas Athene” or Kurzweil's “Lady in Yellow”. The Wienbibliothek shows more from his legacy at the Rathaus.

 Petra und der Wolf
Petra und der Wolf
The Viennese duo “Petra und der Wolf” consisting of Petra Schrenzer and Aurora Hackl Timon had to wait a long time due to Corona. Today, however, their new album “Surface!” may finally be presented live on stage after a forced postponement – at two concerts in a row! At the first listening the rock sound cannot be classified right away: Because of the melancholic singing voice, everything has a tendency to grunge, and sounds from punk and indie are mixed in. The saxophone, unusual for rock, is rather reserved next to the electric guitar, but in the end it matches the sound perfectly.

Sewing grass baskets yourself
Pretty much anyone can braid a braid, but what about basket weaving? Sewing baskets from simple grasses is an ancient tradition that was known all over the world. And it is not as complicated as the finished basket might suggest. The workshop with Bettina Bartsch-Herzog shows how flutter peas, wild oats, but also mint, lavender and even banana plants can be woven. Once you get the hang of it, you will create a unique piece of fine grasses, from the classic bread basket to a decorated herb basket. The necessary materials and some refreshments are included.

Wine Hike: Down the Kahlenberg
Usually the path leads uphill first before the laurels or, in this case, fermented grapes can be enjoyed. The very last wine hike for this year does it the other way around and starts right at the top of the Kahlenberg today. From there you walk together through the dark green of the Vienna Woods and out into the vineyards. You will stop at traditional wine taverns for two glasses of wine (included) or more, depending on which ones are open, and then take a leisurely walk downhill. A pleasant walking tour with a view of Vienna, woods and good wine.

Places of Jewish Life in Margareten
Walk and remember: people like the factory owner Bernhard Altmann and the owners of the Bürgerkino represented the diversity of Jewish life in the 5th district until 1938. The Nazi racial laws turned them into persecuted people. On a tour with scientist Gabriele Anderl, places of Jewish life and work in Margareten will be rediscovered, such as the synagogue in Siebenbrunnengasse. Also brought into focus are the “Aryanisers” and the leaders of “Aktion Grüngasse”, who liquidated goods on a grand scale and squandered Jewish property.

Art Supermarket
Every year, just in time for Christmas, the art supermarket makes a stop in town. Prices and furnishings are reminiscent of a supermarket, but the art sold is real. From today (until the end of the year) you can buy original works of art for little money in this temporary shop: Drawings, watercolours, acrylic paintings and oil paintings as well as small sculptures. More than 6,000 works by 95 national and international contemporary artists will be presented, all originals – and definitely no posters or prints! Elli Bauer: tote bag comedy
The generation of the Millennials: They were born around the 90s and have a tote bag with the right slogan for every situation. Young Elli Bauer from Graz questions those in “Stoffsackerlspruch” in the evening – and provides insights into the life plans of her contemporaries: inherit a house, get a good job and a handsome husband, have exactly 2.1 children and do yoga at night. And everything but too much hair under your eyebrows, of course! It will be an evening with lots of self-irony, singing and physical exertion, which will challenge pigeonhole-thinking.

Special Exhibition: Azteks
The Aztecs called themselves Mexica and ruled a large part of Mesoamerica at the time of the Spanish conquest. In terms of size, their empire on the continent was only surpassed by that of the Incas in Peru. A special exhibition now presents their legendary art and culture with completely new pieces from all over the world: over 200 objects have come from Mexico, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Hamburg. Sculptures of goddesses and the Lord of the Realm of the Dead, eerie masks and stories about the Spanish conquistador paint a picture of the vast Aztek empire.

Woman disappears
How many versions of a person are there? If all labels and stereotypes are scratched off, what are you? In the award-winning text “Frau verschwindet”  Julia Haenni presents images of women and their clichés, the play celebrates its stage premiere today. The scenario: an empty room, the inhabitant has disappeared, simply gone. Four women enter and form an idea of the disappeared woman, who resembles them, who contradicts them, who they escape and who they have always wanted to be. Clever, rough and absurd-funny dialogues with lots of wordplay humour.

Dark Matter Mystery
One quarter of the universe is made up of a substance that no one has ever seen: dark matter. It holds the universe together, so to speak, and ensures that stars do not simply buzz around and galaxies fly apart. Why you can be sure that dark natter exists, although nobody knows what it is made of, is demonstrated today during the show “Dark Matter Mystery” with experiments. By the way, the Nobel Prize Committee explains it like this: a cup full of coffee (dark energy), a shot of milk (dark matter) and sugar (stars) – ta-da, voilà universe!

Silvertree Records Night
When Anne Eck founded her independent music label, it was only intended for her own debut. But since there are so many great female artists, “Silvertree Records” is now a constantly growing, all-female record label. And today, 3 female musicians can be heard in one go at the Reigen: the really strong Maddy Rose and her pop soul sound self-confident, jazzy and spread feel-good vibes. Bilingual with powerful electronic music is Anja Thaler’s first single “Nicht da”. The label founder herself also performs: authentic pop with soulful sounds.

Modeatelier Alina Dax
Sometimes the available space becomes too small for dreams to come true. Like the tailor's table at Alina Dax's home, which she has now exchanged for her own chic fashion studio. The fashion newcomer creates classic fashion in a timeless style, all by hand. Each piece is nothing less than absolute perfection: for sequined dresses she makes seams disappear, with warm check coats and soft jumpers made of merino wool she adapts the pattern and length to the individual wishes of her customers. And it always has to fit perfectly ;-)

Wombat’s Café
The Wombat at the Naschmarkt is currently in the same situation as all the hotels in the city: there is a lull. Instead of moping, the makers of the cosmopolitan hostel have used the time creatively and opened a café this week. (Almost) everything revolves around the bean here: excellent coffee from the hotel's own roasting is served. Cakes (strawberry cheesecake ;-) put you in a good mood and for a snack you can get filled croissants at the bar. All this at very good prices – and in a cool setting: vintage furniture, lounging sofas, lots of plants. Cool!
