"Heya Girls!"
Even though nobody except for me knows about it, the most beautiful Japanese cherry tree of the world was located in the Salzkammergut up until a few years ago – in my parent’s garden, where it was loaded with billions of blossoms every spring and enveloped everyone who came too close in a pink cloud. (Then, unfortunately, lightning felled it.) Obviously: whoever grew up surrounded by a pink cloud of beauty like I did, can never let go of it. And I assume, that the Cherry Blossom Festival this weekend is held especially for me ;-) The festival is not taking place underneath a cherry tree, but at least for two days everything at the Gallery Kro Art revolves around the Japanese art of origami, calligraphy and ikebana. Additionally, there will be finest designs available, also airy fashion designs (from Alila and Linusch), garden accessories, stationary and small art treasures. And there will also be a party – with Japanese finger food from Mari’s Metcha Matcha and music – and everything underneath an ocean of happily jingling wind chimes. Konnichiwa!

Wishing you a pink week

 Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky – Water
The large-sized photographs of the Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky are breathtakingly beautiful. Even when they don’t document the pureness of nature, but landscapes modified by humans, industrial areas or densely populated regions. From today on, the photographs form his most recent series of work “Water” are exhibited at the Kunst Haus. The majority of the images that were photographed effortfully from a bird’s-eye view depicts environmental pollution just as much as waste of water or dried up riverbeds. Also, the artist will be giving a lecture today at 18:00!

Pop up-shop Margaret & Hermione
A good catch and also fair! The colorful bikinis and bathing suits of the new Austrian label Margaret & Hermoine are made sustainably out of fishing nets. The designers Barbara Gölles and Andrea Kollar are anchoring from now on for three weeks at a pop up shop in the 7th district and they brought along their new and flashy “Banana Pop”-collection: ingeniously cut and still comfortable to wear swimwear fashion, shining vibrantly in one color or with fun patterns. The opening party today includes free drinks and free shirts. It’s time for summer to come!

Flo
She could be considered the new voice from the heart of Naples, but around here she is still an insider’s tip. Floriana Cangiano, short Flo, is on the way to becoming a star in her home country with her charming mix of Italian pop and lively folklore. Today, she is performing her very first concert in Vienna and she is bringing along her recently published second album “Il mese del rosario”. Her songs, presented in an expressive way with lots of Southern-Italian spirit, are full of passions, lyrical observations of everyday life and short stories. A little Zaz, a little Billie Holiday and a lot of Naples. Listen in here!

 Vivien Maxa / Sandra Gilles
Spring at Goldfaden
Selected fine designs in an extraordinarily fine store! Fashion designer Sandra Gilles and goldsmith Claire Karo conjured up their very own empire together last October at the former Tankai at Berggasse. Now, at the start of spring, the two of them are inviting two fellow designers to also present their creations at the “Goldfaden”: Sandra Schmidt will be there with the exquisite ”Mangelware” swimwear fashion and Vivien Maxa with nice, spring-like footwear. The two host designers are providing fine new pieces ranging from pink dresses to floral jewelry.

Women’s voices in Arabic and Farsi
Strange country, strange language and the problem of not being understood: the initiative “Ankommen in Wien” (“Arriving in Vienna”) is giving women, who recently moved their entire life to Vienna, a chance to be heard. During a multilingual evening they will be reading texts they chose or wrote themselves in their native language – in Arabic, Farsi or English. Afterwards they will be translated into German. And since not only talking but also eating is a perfect way to unite people, there will also be homemade specialties available to taste. Fine idea!

Youssou N’Dour
Ouch, that hurts! Right when the CitySpotterGirl will be attending the Book Fair in Leipzig, the (musically) adorable Youssou N’Dour is coming to Vienna. The Senegalese Grammy Award-winner with the smooth voice is performing with his band “Le Super Etoile de Dakar” at the Konzerthaus today and bringing joy to the fans of African vibes. His mix of traditional rhythms and singing of the Griots, the storytellers of Senegal, with e-guitars, wind players and funk sound is simply legendary. So, have fun you all! Charlotte Roche vintage archive sale
Now, this is not an everyday occurrence: Charlotte Roche, whose name is also well known in Austria ever since she wrote the upfront and raunchy bestseller “Wetlands”, is parting with a significant number of her own vintage pieces. And the fine things are being sold in Vienna! So, whoever wants to buy a textile Roche-fetish should go to the very special vintage sale today. Because the selection includes – apart from the celebrity-factor – very hip pieces: bohemian chic like a Dries Van Noten trench, an Alexander McQueen skull clutch or Isabel Marant over-knee-fringe-boots.

Viktor Frankl Museum
Whoever hasn’t been there yet should definitely go there soon: two years ago Vienna’s first museum for questions of sense and existence opened its doors. It is based on the realizations of the Freud-colleague and founder of logotherapy Viktor Frankl. On the occasion of the opening of the new media center of the museum, you can explore Frankl’s life and work today at the open door event. By the way, the museum is absolutely not only a dry temple of history, but an interactive world of experience with mental jumping hills! Good opportunity for a therapeutical walk around your own life ;-)

Maren Kroymann
She was already making feminist cabaret, when most people couldn’t even spell the word yet. She played the parts of a priest’s wife, small gardeners and the legendary “night nurse Kroymann” in the very first (!) feminist satire on TV. And according to herself she has been stuck in puberty for the last 50 years ;-) Today you can experience the awesome Kroymann live at the Club alpha during a talk, tomorrow she will be performing her concert-cabaret “In my sixties” at the Theater Akzent, with songs of the 60ies along with amusing moral and sex anecdotes. Great voice, great gags, great woman!

“Vor dem Fliegen”
A strong play with two strong young actresses! The women’s power road movie “Thelma and Louise” is well known by (hopefully!) everybody. The first director’s-work of actress Claudia Kottal is based on the Hollywood movie from the year 1991. 25 years after the film, two young women, played by Julia Schranz and Anna Kramer, are looking for their spot in society and rebelling and fighting for their personal freedom. The 2-women-play about friendship, emancipation and courage is awesomely snappy and intense. Also, because the cool new theater is so small and you are sitting close to the action.

Erwin Wurm, Kiasma / Spitzweg: Museum Georg Schäfer
Carl Spitzweg – Erwin Wurm
Hard to believe: his paintings are world-famous but until now there has never been a comprehensive exhibition of the German painter Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) in Austria. Around 130 years after his death, the Leopold Museum is now making up for that and focusing – contrary to the idyllic Biedermeier paintings – on his works that are critical of society and time. Remarkable, how Spitzweg’s topics can be rediscovered in the “Generation Biedermeier” of the 21st century! Which is especially highlighted through the precisely timed interventions of Erwin Wurm – with humor and irony they are holding up a mirror to their time.

The Appalling-Art-Swap Meet
Fun idea! At a swap event today, organized by the restless “eSeL” Lorenz Seidler, you can exchange appalling art. True to the motto “One wo/man’s trash is another wo/man’s treasure”, everybody can swap a piece of art they don’t like at all for one that is unloved by someone else. Well, if that is not the perfect recipe for a melting pot of all kinds of stuff from kitsch knick-knacks to old oil paintings! Which doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find really great things as well. And you can probably also have lots of fun discussing the different tastes in art ;-)

Star violinist Ray Chen
He is one of the biggest newcomer-stars of the classic scene: the 27-year-young Australian-Taiwanese violinist Ray Chen does not only play terrifically, he also crosses the borders between classical music, fashion and pop culture. He is the first classical artist ever who writes a blog about his life as a touring soloist, more than two million people follow him on the music portal SoundCloud and he has over 100,000 followers on FB. Today, the extraordinary artist (who won the Yehudi Menuhin competition when he was only 18) will finally be performing in Vienna – exciting!

The secrets of the city center
All stories about Vienna’s city center have been told, all secrets revealed. All of them? No! Maria Mustapic and Günter Fuhrmann use their new book to show that the historical center of Vienna is still, even after – or maybe because of – 2000 years of history, full of surprising secrets. They tell stories about Hogwarts by the Danube, Billy Wilder at the Fleischmarkt and also of the historically important location of the Palais Coburg, which played a significant role for many different European royal dynasties. Today, the book will be presented to the public. Exciting!

Energy channels in our body
Everything flowing alright? Better have your meridians checked! The Traditional Chinese Medicine has been concentrating on the energy channels of our body for thousands of years, which is where treatment methods like acupuncture and acupressure stem from. At today’s workshop Doris Slach, coach and kinesiologist, will be presenting the most important acupressure points for the everyday life, explaining the location of the meridians and what their specific functions are. Very interesting are also the emotional counterparts and their physical impact – after all there is a reason why feelings include the word “feel” ;-)

Gruber: Star Trek versus Star Wars
Audience favorite Werner Gruber, the physics entertainer of almost all disciplines, book author, head of the planetarium and the observatory is coming back to the Municipal housing-university – with draught beer bar. “May the force be with you!” or “Scotty, beam me up” could be the two mottos of the physicist today at the Rabenhof around the topic of science fiction. Radpunkt
It’s not like there is a lack of bicycle shops in the 6th district. But Vienna has caught the bicycle bug and that is why the two likable scene-newcomers Sabine Dönz and Clemens Plasser decided to take over the long-established bicycle shop Niesner. It is now called radpunkt, still stocks the KTMs of the former owner, but also Californian marins and hip, Austrian folding bikes. Consultation is what’s most important for the two passionate bikers – especially for women! – and also a prompt service at their own work shop. By the way, the spring-check is on sale right now for 40 Euros. The opening party is this Saturday; the first “ride” (guided bicycle ride starting at the radpunkt) takes place on April 29th!

Pat’s Brainfood
Time to celebrate for the conscious nutrition-fraction in Währing! Close to the Aumannplatz, a brilliant restaurant, which provides the neighborhood with healthy slow-food, has opened its doors recently. Either to eat then and there or to take away or in glasses to store at home. Responsible for the (identifiable by the color-points) energizing, mentally refreshing or relaxing “brain food” is Patricia Essl, who, after the great success of her snack bar in the 1st district, has now opened a second location. Part of the menu are appetizers, soups and stews like mildly spicy beef stifado, a fantastically tasting vegetable curry and red cabbage salad – not only an experience color-wise ;-) Great power food!
