"Heya Girls!"
She smoked like a chimney, swore like a trooper and from the 50s till the 90s she was one of the most self-confident and courageous women of our time: Melina Mercouri. Conviction, fighting spirit and verve run like a thread through the entire life of the 1920-born Greek actress, singer and later also politician: When people said she was too young, too blond, too untalented at the beginning of her career, the non-classic beauty didn’t let herself be put off and made her international breakthrough in 1960 with the comedy “Never on Sunday“! She was also notorious for her everlasting love for Greece, which even continued throughout her expatriation during the Junta. As of 1981 she wrote “true” history in her home country when she fought for the return of the stolen Parthenon Marbles, in her function as minister for culture. Starting the New Year with such an outstanding woman is not bad at all. The stage Bühne Wieden pays tribute to her this week (naturally including her great songs) – and we take the tireless lady as our role model for 2016.

Amalea and Stereo Bullets
Even in Germany they are already talking about the New Austrian Wave. And there are ever more Austro-pop-rock bands coming to the fore. Today, the singer Angelika Zach and her Viennese Combo “Amalea” show how catchy tunes work and their lyrics and instruments will make hearts and the corresponding people jump! It sounds beautiful, melodic and for example like “ A Reason for Hope“. The second band comes from Lower Austria, is called Stereo Bullets and beats drums and guitars a bit harder. Both of them live and with new albums!

The sculptures of the Austrian ex- Pistoletto master class student are f-e-m-a-l-e to the core – and yes, that’s not really a typical artistic criteria, but so what ;) The organic, mostly skin-coloured objects of the 1965-born sculptor are bodies, furniture, rooms and thoughts at the same time and they take visitors into a pink conception paradise of stitches, folds and imprints: there are soft vulva worlds of wax and fabric, hard ceiling and concrete installations and other symbolic geranium “cuttings”, from which new and beautiful things will emerge! Night of Spiritual Songs
What a wonderful start of a new year: Singing and listening to heart songs from all over the world! The “Night of Spiritual Songs” was invented in Germany around ten years ago. Hundreds of people meet to sing together simple songs of the world cultures’ different spiritual traditions. The event is taking place in Vienna for the sixth time tonight. For four hours, until midnight, you can sing, chant, yodel and sound together – or just enjoy the sound pattern and take a break.

Mama Africa – Circus of Senses
Of course, a circus show makes use of common clichés and exaggerations – in this case African and colonial outfits, grass skirts and wild make-up. But the pleasant difference compared to Andre Heller’s version from 2005 is the fact that the 40 gifted artists and dancers of the Mama Africa production “Khayelitsha – My Home“ are actually from Africa and do not only wear black make-up. Ferrari Zöchling
Colourful dashes of colour will jump at you in the newly opened store of young designer Romana Zöchling. That is, dashes of colour in the truest sense of the word, because the current collection is ornamented by details of largely blown-up felt pen drawings by Luna Ghigetti. And they look really cool on the jersey shirts, pullovers and pantaloons! The Hetzendorf-graduate’s idea to use digital pictures for the prints on her creations was inspired by the photographer Severin Koller whose photos landed, among others, on black-and-white silk shirts – chic and very unusual, just like everything in the shop!

The room alone is a challenge: The restaurant in the MAK is, as you know, a huge hall with a pompous ceiling. But after the renovation you go into raptures already when entering the restaurant. With its mix of elegant sixties style, amazing Frank fabrics and funny details the “Salonplafond“ looks almost cosy. And the cooking concept of the German TV celebrity chef Tim Mälzer seems to work as well.
