Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Well, ladies, are you already close to the pre-Christmas sugar high? Or are you already tired of the Viennese advent charm with Vanillekipferl, punch, and the never-changing presents? Luckily, there’s another way: more original, more fun, more multiculti! You can soak up a dash of African Christmas vibes at the African Christmas market on the weekend, for instance. They have much to admire and purchase there, from cheerfully patterned African textiles, fashion, and jewellery to art carvings. And the super-delicious African finger food reliably neutralises any possible sugar overdose. What’s more, an extra-nice yule bazaar takes places at the Sofiensäle. It provides Christmas vibes with its Swedish programme: traditional Lucia songs are sung, “Glögg”-mulled wine is drunk, and Swedish delicacies are served. And sure, Sweden fans will also be able to shop here, of course.

Wishing you a colourful week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Making Japanes Greeting Cards
Well, grandma will be in for a surprise when she finds out who sent her a Japanese greeting card! Today’s workshop by artist Hiroka Ueba teaches you how to draw dragons, characters, lampions, fish and much more in the style of the Japanese New Year. Originally, these cards, which were delivered exactly on New Year’s Day, were sent to friends and family that lived far away. Here in our part of the world, our loved ones will wonder and then be amazed at what the young ones created in no more than one-and-a-half hours! And maybe granny will slip you some for your next trip to Japan…

 Needs Must Film
this human world
13 festival days and more than 100 feature films, documentaries and animated films in 4 cinemas: once again the festival “this human world” will focus on human rights this year. And it does so, as usual, without moralising undertones but instead wittily, thrillingly and harrowingly. Today’s film marathon includes, among other films, “From tomorrow on I will” from Peking and “Bruce Lee and the Outlaw” for which Joost Vandebrug followed Rumanian street child Nicu in Bucharest for six years. And on Saturday, there will even be a film poster flea market for a good cause!

 Piatnik
Piatnik Special Sale
Pssst! Special tip for Christkinds and Christmas ladies: every year again in December, you can snatch low-priced games at Piatnik. At the Christmas Special Sale, they sell off remaining stock, individual items, and slightly damaged games, as well as board games and long running games from DKT to Activity, plus puzzles and playing cards. And with a bit of luck, you might also find some new game hits that are price-reduced due to minor material defects. Collectors will also find rarities – and those who like indulging in reminiscences may even find some games from their own childhood.

Advent Tour Nibelungen Quarter
A fine opportunity to explore a not so well-known neighbourhood! The 15th district is blossoming into a trendy quarter – more and more creative people are settling around Kriemhildplatz and Burjanplatz, as well. And some of them introduce themselves tonight: Monika Ritter invites you into her atelier, you can create Christmas decorations and cards with Marija Strmotic, the gallery Art Pool shows “Engerl & Bengerl”, at Buchkontor you can recharge your batteries with Irish coffee. And in the church crypt on Burjanplatz they host an advent-singing. Sounds like a nice after-work walk.

 Akademie Wintermarkt
Akademie Winter Market
Every year again, the Advent Market of the Academy of Fine Arts presents itself with super-creative offers and with a charitable objective. For three days, the former Semperdepot will become a trading centre for uncommon things. You will find cool unique pieces by prospective artists and designers at a hundred market stalls. Plus, there will be bands rocking the courtyard again, today it’s Conny Kubinger’s turn, plus, they also have a couple of choirs like körölör there that will fire up the crowd. And ad solidarity: you can also drop off some presents for refugee children there!

SelbermacherInnen Christmas Market
Sadly, CitySpotterGirl’s resolution to put more self-made things under the Christmas tree is going to fail again because of time passing twice as fast during advent. But luckily, there are (thank you!) people who manage to avidly crochet, knit, bottle and bake, even during the most stressful time of the year. At Amtshaus Margareten, you can purchase a variety of lovingly self-made things today. The market is being organised by the association “Station Wien”. An opportunity to support a good initiative – and to stick to another resolution: to shop locally!

Xmas gas station
What are 17 designers doing at a gas station? Hosting a Christmas market! Namely at the windowless but light chain covered Kunsttankstelle Ottakring. The low-waste camp offers beeswax cloths by Sheepish and recycled lamps made from teapots or flat irons by Relumenate from Brooklyn. Something else that you certainly won’t find at any other winter market in Vienna are Rosemarie Hebenstreit’s paper cuttings made by using an old technique and a sale of buntwäsche. Most of the 17 artists come from Vienna, everything is sustainable and handmade!

Martin Klein/ Mary Broadcast
Today you may open not one but two doors from the (musical) advent calendar: first Martin Klein will strike the keys with feeling at the double concert, then Mary Broadcast follows off with powerful pop songs. While Klein is compared to Thom Yorke, Mary Broadcast produced her latest album “SVINX” with the Sofa Surfers. What they have in common: their impressive musical life careers! And since the whole thing takes place in the context of the musical advent calendar, you can memorise it like this: on 7 December a Wienerlied concert in the 7th district, on 8 December in the 8th and jolly onward in that way…

Augarten Markterei
Now there the siblings Bitzinger from Markterei have come up with something nice: with selected producers as well as some new faces, they move into the newly renovated Schankwirtschaft at Augarten for the weekend. With regional Mangalitza salami, ginger liquor by Ingwerer and handmade unique items by Nut & Feder and Yaga, they conquer the stone vault of the former “Bunkerei”. Outside at the campfire, you may indulge in a hot cocktail or bust a move inside (on Saturday) with the Lindy Hop Tasters – and fall happily into bed afterwards.

 Ruth Wegerer
Angel Advent
One design advent market is currently chasing the next, somehow you already lose track. Nevertheless, you still find some insider’s tips – like Ruth Wegerer’s angel workshop. The journalist uses fabrics and iron wire to create poetic creatures that are simply a must-see. Once a year she sells the angels that have long been legendary among connoisseurs at her private angel market. For the production of the (up to 100 cm tall) figurines, she uses chandelier crystals, silk flowers, feathers, bark and antique lace. Plus: free buffet and pretty things from 11 other designers!

The fans of “2 Minutes 2 Millions” know Stefanie Kukla, since that TV show is where she gained a fat cash injection for her innovative business in a professional and charming manner. From shawl and west to low-backed dress, everything is possible with a KUKLA. Have you become curious? Until 23 December you can buy the smart wrap thing at a pop-up at Seilergasse!

Weihnachtsengel küsst man nicht
It’s complicated. Linda, a former Prada model, is supposed to advertise salami dressed as a Christmas angel, plus give reindeer Katla a kiss on its hairy muzzle. That goes wrong, then several date mishaps and matchmaking stories follow and so in the end Lina, Manfred and Annette meet unexpectedly at Rudi's farm and get snowed in. The result: chaos, love tangles and a Christmas of a special kind. Based on the Christmas novel of the same name, Rory Six wrote a musical comedy that takes all clichés to task and will make the audience cry with laughter.

The Best Christmas Cookies
The best Christmas cookies are always the ones made by grandma. But in the course with "Chief of Sugar" Jürgen Vsetecka even she might yet learn something. The confectioner and tartelette master worked for Oberlaa and Landtmann and since 2010 has been the deputy chief pastry chef at Meinl am Graben. He also writes cookbooks for Gusto in which he reinterprets old recipes – well, and he's handsome, too ;-) During the four-hour baking course, Vsetecka shows his "best Christmas cookies" in a small setting and introduces you to the art of baking them.

Mystery Hunt
CitySpotterGirl already followed the Mystery of the Sphinx a year ago (successfully, I’d like to emphasise here ;-) Now there’s a new Mystery Hunt at Kunsthistorisches Museum. In the magnificent Kunstkammer, you can trace Rudolf II, the most enigmatic of all Habsburgs. He was a magical emperor, far ahead of his time, who surrounded himself with alchemists, astrologers and occultists and was not understood by his contemporaries. You play in groups of 4-8 people, receive a box with mysterious hints and riddles upon booking and experience the museum in a completely new way.

No longer buried: Malzgasse 16
Malzgasse 16 in the 2nd district once housed a school, a synagogue and the world's first (!) Jewish Museum. All three were destroyed during the November pogroms of 1938, nothing remained of the interior furnishings. At least that's what they thought. Until someone discovered bricked up cellar rooms in 2018, which brought astonishing findings to light: inkpots, dumbbells for gymnastics lessons, destroyed gravestones and cult objects. The pieces are currently on display in the Haus der Geschichte, and a guided tour in the Malzgasse now provides background information on the unusual find.

Wagner’s Kitchen
Quite courageous, actually: in a city where only Poke Bowls and Thai-street food remain viable options for a quick meal, they are betting on something quite old-fashioned in Pilgramgasse as of this week. Wagner's Kitchen serves warm baguettes. And they really taste damn good! All freshly made, all creatively filled. There are baguettes with steak and lime aioli, the Italian version with mozzarella and chicken in parmesan coating or "the Mexican" with chicken breast and guacamole. Even the sauces are homemade. Plus, really nice service!
