"Heya Girls!"
When art star Jonathan Meese runs across the Zweierlinie, the square in front of the City Hall is a stressful construction site and there is this certain crackle to be felt in the May-air, it can only mean one thing: the Festwochen are about to start! And this Friday the big opening is happening at the Rathausplatz. With poems in Viennese dialect and Spoken Word Poetry, Gypsy jazz and soul, rock’n’rave from Russia and Zulu-sounds. The host of the versatile show is lady unstoppable – Conchita! And she will be doing something that I, thanks to TV broadcasting, have already seen in show at the Sydney Opera House: give an incredible symphonic concert. In duets and unusual arrangements, together with the Vienna Symphony, Conchita will encounter the incomparable variety that makes this city so unique. Harri Stojka, Russkaja, MoZuluArt, Ernst Molden and Yasmo & die Klangkantine are also part of the performance. And everything for free. And please, in dry weather!

Sculpere
A tribute to the 1970ies and a trip to a nostalgic place! The performance “Sculpere” unites dance, art and vivid city (garden) planning. The open air stage is provided by the ageing architecture site around the "Schwanensee" at Kurpark Oberlaa, a remnant of the International Garden Show 1974. Moving sculptures from today's artists come together with the weathered objects from back in the days. Ten “PionierInnen” (“Pioneers”) from the dance company of the same name are expressing the volatility of art and dancing and transporting art blockbusters and forgotten pieces into the presence.

The CitySpotterGirl loves blueprinting and that is why (and not only because of that!) she considers Klara Neuber’s newest collection to be real beautiful. It is the designer’s vision to dedicate a collection to each Federal State of Austria using the respective traditional fabrics. The last collection was dominated by Styrian loden cloth, now it is time for the blueprint technique – in cooperation with the traditional business Koó from Burgenland. The new “INDIG_OH”-creations ranging from collars to dresses will be presented today at the Samstag shop, you can check out a virtual fashion show of the pieces at the portal!

Wunderweiber pop up market
Well, this can only turn out to be wonderful! It all started with a Facebook group called “Wiener Wunderweiber” (“Wonderwomen of Vienna”). By now, there are thousands of women participating, each with her own way of being wonderful – and offering many great things. After a lively online exchange, the virtual market place is brought into the real life for the very first time: at a dream location (with garden!), the Wonderwomen are selling anything ranging from fashion to sweets to dishes, also, there will be a photo-studio, readings and introductory sessions from massage to Grinberg. Afterwards chill out with cabaret and music!

Let’s go to the far North! At the Urania, filmmakers from Northern and Baltic countries are conjuring exciting stories from Sweden to Estonia onto the screen. Today, the program includes a filmic excursion to Iceland: in the film “Sparrows”, a 16-year-old is forced to move from Reykjavik to his from the financial crisis badly effected father in the North of the island. A lot less dramatic is the topic of the panel discussion happening at the culmination of the event on Tuesday: it is about the question why the population of Nordic countries is so happy and what the famous “Hygge” is all about ;-)

Flower Power for Maria Theresia
By now, everybody should know that it has been 300 years today (!) that Maria Theresia was born, since there are so many exhibitions dedicated to her. Today, she is paid homage through two nice events. Under the supervision of the Federal Gardeners you can plant flowers around the Maria Theresia monument between the two museums. Plants and the necessary tools are provided by the Federal Gardens for free. And whoever needs even more exercise, can follow into the footsteps of the empress on a Segway with historically dressed guides. Next to her monument, the tour also includes places like Schönbrunn.

Son Of The Velvet Rat
The newspaper Kurier awarded him the title of “Best Songwriter of the country”. And the Austrian songwriter Georg Altziebler does not only enjoy a stellar reputation in this country but also internationally. His newest album “Dorado” with his “Samtrattensohn”-project was recorded in California. It includes songs about travelling like “ Blood Red Shoes” – as always, the music finds itself somewhere in between folk noir and melancholy. And thanks to his wonderful melodies and deep voice you always kind of have to think of Bob Dylan ;-) Special guest at today’s concert: singer Laura Rafetseder.

Vienna Gourmet Festival
Oh yes, there’ll be an enormous crowd in the meadows of Stadtpark once again: as long as the weather is good, this weekend Austria’s biggest culinary festival will be taking place! On more than 190 elegant stands, Austria’s best culinary manufacturers offer regional products to sample and to take home: alpine salmon, organic hay lemonade, plum vinegar, Pannonian fennel pollen, poppy seed pesto or snail ragout – everything “made in Austria”. Nice: besides live cooking shows, original milk farmers will be talking about their day-to-day work.

Konstante Art Fair Vienna 2017
Art lovers can delight themselves in colors, forms and festivities this weekend in the Josefstadt. In the halls of the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art at the beautiful Palais Schönborn, more than 40 artists of various stylistic directions are presenting their pieces ranging from paintings to sculptures and installations. “Art doesn’t have to be crazy. But it can be!” is the motto of the spectacle, which also includes a daily Art Breakfast, a live graffiti performance and a literature afternoon. And since the Palais also has a green courtyard, a garden party will be celebrated there today.

The future is better than its reputation
We make the world as we like it! So many people have a very pessimistic outlook into the future right now. But there is the possibility of co-designing the world. A new documentary film shows people, who move something – also including four true power women. They are fighting for a vivid political culture, for sustainable solutions when it comes to food and construction, for a new economy and social justice. Encouraging and inspiring! After today’s special screening at the Gartenbau Cinema, the brass band Federspiel will be performing their music, which was composed exclusively for this film.

Cocktails, art and cool music: at the Cupola Hall of the Museum of Art History the “Kunstschatzi” is promising a good party once again. Just for the event’s motto “Voyage, Voyage”, barkeeper Tom Sipos created a very fine drink, the complementing DJ sounds come from “Hedonismus Hacienda Graz”. There is also the possibility to walk through the gallery of paintings, the chamber of art and the special exhibition “Das erste Gold” (“The first gold”) anytime. Special themed guided tours will happen with the motto “Fiction of the unknown” and “ Sex knows no age” – from 20:00 on at every full hour.

Veilings at the St. Stephan’s Cathedral
Time to veil the men! Victoria Coeln currently corrects the dominating gender relations in an artful way – and that at the St. Stephen’s Cathedral of all places! Because there, Coeln veiled male stylites in semi-transparent fabric and uses specific, focused light to heighten the visibility of the female sculptures and the depictions of the Virgin Mary at the Cathedral until June 12th. In addition, the artist lets great women from the 20th and 21st century – philosophers, pacifists and activists – have their say via text projections. That is definitely something every woman should see!

Sew your pin-on friend
Maria Sulzer sews dolls that are far more than just dolls. They are not only delightful in a very humorous way, but also “best friends”, an accessory for your soul. At today’s workshop you can sew mini version of the fabric ladies that can be pinned on. They will be created from fabric remnants from the production phase and a lapel pin. And with many hand-sewn seams and under the expert supervision of Maria Sulzer, anybody can manage to create their very own textile companion for all times. Or maybe a “mini-me” as a present for your best friend – also a cute idea!

Self-portrait - context image of women
The painter and gallery owner Christa Hauer-Fruhmann did not want to live with the discrimination against female artists any longer. In 1977 she founded the “International Action Group of Visual Artists – IntAkt”. With actions and “femifestivals” IntAkt has been standing up for art making women. For its anniversary, an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse is dedicated to the female self-portrait: fifty exhibiting female artists are expressing themselves through different types of media ranging from film to photography and installation. Now this is strong art full of women’s power!

Charity – Each one saves one African
Wild determination, a donation box and five actors and actresses: they are rehearsing a charity event in order to support a school project in Guinea-Bissau. But how do you talk about poverty and misery in Africa in an entertaining way? What are European actors allowed to say/think/feel about Africa? And how much is a human life actually worth? More than 65 million people are fleeing their homes at the moment – and we switch between honest and embarrassing concern. The play is set on a minefield of vanities and shame and settles up with terms like solidarity, victimhood or sympathy.

figar Bao.Bun
It seems like a new food trend has come to Vienna: bao buns. But those things do really taste delicious! The yeast dough buns are steamed in huge bamboo baskets and then cut open on one side and filled with all kinds of things. An Asian burger, so to say. At the recently opened and small figar Bao.Bun (most conveniently located close to the office, thank you ;-) six different versions of the street food-thingy are served in a minimalistic atmosphere. With crispy chicken and quinoa, with steak and wasabi puree or with salmon. Since the buns are fairly small, you have to eat at least two of them. And homemade fries!
