"Heya Girls!"
Already tired of the whole Viennese Advent magic with vanilla crescents, punch, and always the same presents? Luckily there’s another way: more original, funnier, more multiculti! A pinch of African Christmas feeling can be soaked up at the World Christmas bazaar at Galerie Fortuna, for instance. They have unique pieces, like upcycled scrap metal trays or bedspreads with sponge printing art from Burkina Faso. And Saturday’s Africa Market at Afripoint also tempts you with special gift ideas, too – fashion, jewellery, and treat yourself shea butter -cosmetics. Plus, the Kwanzaa-Festival with live music and African buffet is on 16 December! On December 17, however, Russian Advent nostalgia emerges at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. There, fans of global partying are carried off eastwards with delicacies from the Russian cuisine (yes, including caviar, grins) and traditional craftmanship. And finally, we’re off to Tibet with Buddhist prayer flags, Advent-wise, at the Yak & Yeti!

150 years of Applied Arts
Congrats! The University of Applied Arts celebrates its 150th anniversary! With a brilliant huge exhibition in which Austria’s craziest, most innovative and visionary university shows what it always was, is, and will be best at: making art! The first part of the jubilee show is about looking back, browsing old curriculums and admiring 400 selected highlight-exhibits of the past. The second part, like in the “Future Room”, looks to the future! To many provocative, contemporary art-strokes of genius by Peter Weibel, Hans Hollein & co.

Across the Universe
Sounds like the perfect mix for the Advent finish: yoga, design, healing, art, and sustainable products. All of this is combined in the newly opened “Happy Place” in Josefstadt, where a small co-working space, a gallery, a yoga studio, a treatment room, and a showroom find themselves on 200 recently spruced up square meters. The latter will be inaugurated with a pop up, you can shop lovely Christmas cards of illustrator Evi Psaltidi, handmade glass pearl jewellery by Marion Juraszovich, or felt ware by Sawatou Mouratidou.

That’s the name of the area around the Franz-Josefs-trains station in the 9th district, which is currently regarded as one of the most interesting city development projects. But in the meantime, before an elevated park and an exciting all-round will emerge there, they’re busy using the space otherwise! And so, without further ado, “Wunderweiber” have transformed the Althaan dialogue office into a colourful Xmas popup store. Today, a woman has exactly two choices: either she puts on her bouldering shoes and qualifies for the Vienna Finale at the preceding jam session between 15:30 and 17:00. The top six are in! Or she exercises passively, mingles with the spectators, and watches the best bouldering chamois from up close. CitySpotterGirl, too, is thinking about painting the walls red soon by help of the mega hip skills-and strength climbing technique. But today, it’s just about cheering on and partying!

Advent am Himmel
Cue: slow movement! Today, urban escapees are treated to restful hours and a fabulous view over all of Vienna “am Himmel”. At 15:00, tower wind musicians of Wiener Stadtmusikanten are playing Christmas classics in front of Sisi chapel, at 14 and 17 o’clock, Schubert’s wonderful “Winterreise” is played in the tree of life circle. Hot cinnamon-apple juice, mulled wine and cookies at fire braziers will help you stay warm. And when it gets dark, Sisi chapel will be shining with colourful lights, its play of colours creating feelings of romantic-kitschy winter happiness. Beautiful!

Organic honey from Neuwaldegg tasting
About 200,000 kilometres for a single kilogram of honey, that’s how far the industrious Mayas from Karl and Uli Heller’s organic bee keeping have travelled once again, for example to Schwarzenbergpark, Pötzleinsdorfer Schlosspark and at the foot of Rax and Schneeberg. The tasty delicacies that they created can be tasted today at Manameierei. And one thing is for certain: this year’s Demeter gold winning “Summer honey with Viennese lime” will tempt even the laziest Willy! There’s also Christmas tree ornaments made from beeswax.

And since the moody FM4-morning show-star is a true sly old dog when it comes to humour, he’s not only making fun about the differences of British/Austrian differences in Xmas-traditions, food and drinks but is also pulling the Queen’s leg. Christmas Show on the Danube
Occasionally, CitySpotterGirl likes sailing down the bleak Danube in winter melancholically (maybe more than in summer with all the hustle and bustle). Fiva meets Jazzrausch Bigband
Today, Porgy & Bess will shake like Balver Höhle did sound-wise during the MTV Unplugged concert by Fanta 4 in 2000. What the Hip-Hop broadswords dared back then – translate flat electro beats into real orchestral music – is now brought to completion by rapper Fiva with her big band of 20 plus string quartet. This troupe also manages to trick everyone’s ears when it comes to acoustics, transforms scratch-sounds into warm string sounds and DJ grooves into hymnal windplayer clang. Not to mention Nina “Fiva” Sonnenberg’s poetical text rap. Listen in and be wowed!

In the yard of Alpenmilch headquarters, inhabited by co-workers and creative folk today, there has been good cooking for a while now. A few days ago, the owners changed, and now Babsi Fegerl and Robert Haider provide the neighbourhood with lunch. Very small menu, always a vegetarian option, the recipes (like stuffed cabbage rolls or beef steak with Serviettenknödel) are often inspired by Austrian classics. Tastes homely somehow! In stark contrast to the cooking is the architecture: industry style with a concrete block as counter. Cool!
