"Heya Girls!"
Explorations behind the scenes of “something” are my passion. Probably not exactly surprising to anyone, why else would you become a spy ;-) This week there is now for the first time an event where curious people like me can peek behind the scenes of fashion designers. As part of the first “Open Fashion Studios” on March 31 and April 1, Austria's fashion designers open their studios and small craft workshops for two days (and evenings) and present their collections. A total of 60 designers are taking part throughout Austria, half of them in Vienna. Sabine Karner, for example, presents the creation of a fashion collection at her Open Showroom in the 1st district, gives insights into the creative process of fashion design and shows live how an evening gown is made. At Magdalena Leitner’s you can experience ready-to-wear women's fashion inspired by the 50s (photo). There's a lot to see on the tour of Austria's fashion scene – from evening dresses to streetwear, from tradition to avant-garde. Well then!

Wishing you a cheery week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Belvedere/ Privatsammlung
Art Crash Course
How do you recognise expressionist art? And what actually characterises the Baroque? The Belvedere owns world-famous paintings from 800 years of art history and is launching a series of courses for art enthusiasts of all levels who want to gain basic knowledge about styles and painting techniques of the most important art epochs. During a free (!) guided tour of the Upper Belvedere today, the characteristic motifs, colour schemes and perspectives of the Middle Ages and the Baroque will be explained. In April, the tour continues with Biedermeier, Art Nouveau and Expressionism. Cool!

 H&M
Iris Apfel x H&M
Now, CitySpotterGirl rarely makes plans, but there is one very clear one: aging only like Iris Apfel, please! The New York fashion icon, who celebrated her 100th birthday a few weeks ago with a mega party, doesn't care about rules and conventions. Accordingly, her fashion style is colourful and eye-catching – which you can buy in Vienna from today. In a cooperation with Lady Apfel, H&M presents an extravagant collection that scores with lots of colour and patterns: like a jacquard suit embroidered with peas and pearls. Not exactly inconspicuous ;-)

Best-Of Nadja Maleh
„Speech is silver, silence is gold – let's glitter together.” Nadja Maleh doesn't mince her words! The Viennese cabaret artist has been touring Austria and Germany time and again for over a decade with her witty solo programmes. Today she paints the town red on the cabaret stage “Zur Kulisse” and presents a cheerful mixture of past performances. She slips into the most diverse roles: Whether naïve silly-billy or daredevil heroine – Maleh can do them all ;-) And the woman can sing, too. So today there's chansons and silliness, including a live guitarist.

Marché des créateurs
Vive la France! French handicrafts are on sale at this market organised by the francophone association Vienne Accueil (At Home in Vienna). The association wants to make it easier for people from France to settle in Vienna and is organising a fine design market today with jewellery, decorations, accessories, illustrations and stationery. At the Kolpinghaus in Währing, which is actually a student home, you can also enjoy coffee and small French delicacies while getting to know the French community in Vienna – including their artwork ;-)

Princess Angine
Indie pop from Russia? Almost. Singer-songwriter Xenia Ostrovskaya originally comes from St. Petersburg, but has been living in Vienna for years. In 2014 she founded her band, which combines contemporary pop with 80s synth and electronic music. The connection to her homeland remains nonetheless, namely through language: Ostrovskaya sings in Russian about strong women. Princesse Angine also makes a clear statement: all proceeds from the concert go to Train of Hope and help refugees from Ukraine.

 Strandbar Herrmann
Strandbar Hermann season opening
Never mind that it will get chilly again at the weekend: Spring is here and that finally puts an end to winter jackets and scarf wrapping. Instead, it's off to the Danube Canal beach – the freshly spruced-up Strandbar Herrmann is opening its doors again today! The deckchairs are ready, the sand is waiting for bare feet and the cocktail glasses are polished. Hungry people will be catered for this season with original Thai street food from Krazy Kitchen. Chill events from Silent Disco to free Shiatsu and Yoga complete the beach vibes. Oh, approaching summer, we love you!

 Peter Holzinger
Samstag Shop Closing Sale
An era is coming to an end: For 12 years, the Samstag Shop has provided Vienna with avant-garde designer fashion. Now Peter Holzinger is leaving for new shores and will close his store. This causes mixed emotions: On the one hand, there's one less place to go for exciting brands like House of the very Island or Holzinger's own label Superated. On the other hand, there's a huge sale of everything! The designers themselves will be present today to chat and say goodbye. But the journey continues online: From now on, both fashion labels are only available in the web shop!

 Rebel Candy Hearts
Hand’gmacht Market
At the Schreiberhaus, you can find handmade goods from small producers and manufactures from Austria this weekend. At this spring and Easter market you can find handmade jewellery made from old wine barrels by Knock on Wine, natural cosmetics by Kosmetikmacherei or notebooks made from old maps by kartostrophe. Especially nice: couples can have romantic professional photos taken in the middle of the Schreiberhaus vineyard today! And if April has its way again: in case of bad weather, the market will take place on the entire upper floor of the Heurigen.

Culinary Festival
This will make your mouth water. The Vienna Ballhaus with its pretty garden is the scene of epicurean festivities this weekend. Fesch-Markt founder Katrin Hofmann is organising a culinary festival “with everything that's good” together with gastro-thusiast Hannah Neunteufel and the natural wine experts from The Wine Rebellion. At the stalls of selected small producers, you can enjoy food and drink, and fine tableware will also be presented and sold. Cool: at the cookbook corner you can swap cookbooks with others!

Des Kaisers schönste Tiere
The animals are on the loose in the State Hall of the National Library! Elephants, big cats & co. first found their way to Austria with the Habsburgs. Before that, exotic animals were known to most people only from illustrations. Owning non-native animals became the ultimate status symbol, and the emperor and his consorts liked to have them and themselves immortalized on canvas. The Metternich family, for example, owned rare bird species and little monkeys inhabited the imperial garden for decades.

Vinzi-Rast Easter Market
If you're looking for Easter gifts, you can make it easy on yourself and drop by the VinziRast. For two days, a market will be held in the workshops and courtyard of “mittendrin”, where all the products – especially cool upcycled unique items – have been made by refugees: backpacks from old linen, scarves from former silk ties, wooden toys, jewellery stands and greeting cards. And it wouldn’t be an Easter market if they didn’t also offer a variety of decorated wooden eggs, cute egg hats in the shape of chicks and some more spring decorations. :)

Argus Bike Festival
Ding-a-ling, the cycling season has started! For the kick-off, two-wheeler fans can now get high on all things boneshaker at Rathausplatz. After a break of two years, Europe's biggest bike festival with over 100 exhibitors, a test track and a bike flea market will be held there this weekend. And a highlight for bike fans is also the show of the daredevil jumping “dirt riders” and BMX superstars. Better not try that yourselves, dear ladies! Better pedal along in an orderly fashion during the big bike parade over the Ring and Hauptallee or join the bike ride to Weinviertel ;-)

Personal data and cookies
The joke that crumbly website cookies are very tasty is old by now. But what exactly website cookies are and how they work is still far from being part of the general body of knowledge! In this workshop, adult educator Nikolaus Fennes explains interesting facts about cookies, social bots and fake news. In the group, these abstract phenomena, which are often quite difficult to grasp, are discussed and explored in a playful way. Fennes actually teaches at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, but today he gives a free introduction to digital spaces. For interested people of all ages!

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky
The inventor of the fitted kitchen would be 125 years old this year! Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was one of Austria's first female architects, her work being characterised by social commitment and high-quality design. City guide Felicitas Konecny interviewed the grande dame of Austrian architecture before her death and leads a tour through Hietzing today. Schütte-Lihotzky designed 2 terraced houses for the Vienna Werkbundsiedlung there in the 30s. At that time there was an acute housing shortage in Vienna – the floor plan of the houses was therefore only 35sqm.

June Coco
“I'm my own queen, I take the reign, it's easy, with the echoes of the waves surrounding me”, that’s what June Coco sings in her song Neptune's Daughter. The Leipzig artist sings about water remarkably often, it’s probably one of her loves! Originally a bar pianist, the singer-songwriter still writes mainly for the piano. With a little bit of electronics mixed in, the result is a pleasant mixture of dream pop and chanson. June Coco stands out above all with her voice, which reminds one a little of Florence Welch in its self-confidence and strength. You have the chance of listening to her today at B72!

Gerti Drassl: Heldenplätze
Not on the main stage of the Volkstheater, but under the roof in the “Dunkelkammer”, the wonderful Gerti Drassl will give a solo performance today. In Calle Fuhr's monologue, the actress looks at our longing for role models: What do we remember, what do we not? We are what we are because we remember. Theresa's role model is Toni Sailer, the national hero she has admired all her life. But a lot changes when rape allegations against Sailer from 1974 are reopened and reviewed in 2018. Fiction meets real history, theatre meets journalism!

This is short
Attention: binge-watching risk! Short film fans are in for a treat: the short film festival “This is short” goes into its second round! You can see Anna Vasov's film Amazon Woman, for example. It shows all the things the head can do: the nose becomes a socket, the ear part of a steering wheel, the teeth a pair of pliers for pulling nails... For 3 months, hundreds of short films from 4 different European festivals can be viewed via streaming platform with a festival pass! Anna Vasov's film is one of three Austrian productions nominated for the Europe-wide, festival-internal competition. Fingers crossed!

Fesches Kistl
Here the name says it all: rustic wooden crates provide space for micro-entrepreneurs to sell their regional, handmade products. The Fesches Kistl is a neighbourly marketplace, the workpieces come from very different sectors. Many have something to do with upcycling: Concrete art stands next to bowls made from old oil drums and glasses made from former beer bottles. But also ketchup made in Vienna or prints and illustrations by still unknown artists are available. They also have a nice place to sit down and hang out, and a coffee machine.

Istros
And yet another new hotel in the city! The Radisson Red is located on the Danube Canal and has treated itself to a damn nice rooftop. With a panoramic view of the whole city and a bar named after the river god of the Danube. It opens at 15:00, so you might also drop by for a coffee. But with its large cocktail menu, Istros is more suitable for after-work drinks. The food menu is small, but fun – including Pulled Sacher Torte with apricots. And in summer you will be able to watch the crowds on the Danube Canal, also called pulsating life.
