editorial

"Heya Girls!"
“I'll be off then,” said Hape Kerkeling 15 years ago, triggering a boom. Pilgrimage became – completely independent of its religious significance – a modern kind of vision quest. But also a programme to become physically and mentally active or simply an interesting way of walking. Walking along old paths, spending the night in simple accommodation and leaving the familiar behind, that has a great appeal for us stimulus-saturated city dwellers. But what do you do if you don't have six weeks to walk the Way of St. James, the European pilgrimage route par excellence, to Santiago de Compostela? Then just go on pilgrimage in and around Vienna! The best place for beginners to start is at Stephansplatz: the Zwettlerhof offers individual advice for pilgrims, pilgrim's passports, a pilgrims' café and regular brunches to exchange ideas with experienced walkers. By the way: The “Vienna Way of St. James” leads via Schwechat, the Danube Island, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Schönbrunn and Purkersdorf to Göttweig. Perhaps we will see each other!

Wishing you an exciting week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Volcanic Excursion (A Vision)
The most exciting and clearly most unusual picture in the city currently hangs in the Secession. The French artist Dominique Gonzales-Foerster has created a 24-metre-long and 5-metre-high hidden picture – and immortalised her own personal “who's who” of art history on it. The picture collage convenes 235 personalities from different centuries. The life-size figures include Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo as well as Klimt and Emilie Flöge, Bob Dylan, Callas and Romy Schneider. Even aliens have been spotted ;-) Must see!

 Dream Noir
Dream Noir
The summer is off to a good start for the band Dream Noir alias Eva Prosek and David Furrer. On the day of their live performance at the Kaiserwiese, they also have the release of their new single entitled “Mumford” to celebrate. The duo's music moves elegantly between singer/songwriter and pop and welcomes listeners into a quiet, introverted world of sound. In their songs, the two musicians show a very private side that is characterised by emotions, honesty and nostalgia. Mixed in is a dash of melancholic cheerfulness.

Lavendar, the Allrounder
For herb witches and all those who would like to become one! Lavender smells great, tastes intense and special, has an antiseptic and antispasmodic effect and helps against annoying insects such as mosquitoes or ants. And the nicest thing about it: it blooms all summer long! In the Sonnentor shop on Landstraße, herbal expert Julia Binder shows us the many different ways in which the lavender plant can be used. And, of course, you can try your hand at it yourself there: lavender sugar, lavender liqueur or deodorant – to take home and use straight away.

 Nina Hartmann
Nina Hartmann is loud
In her 4th solo programme “Laut”, cabaret artist Nina Hartmann asks herself a few questions about one of the most important human sensory organs: the ear. Which reacts sensitively to noise. This gives Hartmann food for thought – for example, how loud may one actually be in bed and are you even allowed to talk about it? Or: Is it still possible to sit still in a world where only the loud ones are heard? Nina Hartmann's idea of hell is a monastery of silence and being banned from libraries. Now she is finally allowed to be loud – on stage with drums and trumpets.

A short holiday in the sunny Mediterranean! The retsina is flowing and the barbecue is sizzling with promise: that's what relaxed Greek flair feels like and that's exactly what the Greek garden party is exuding today at the Pawlatschen in Vienna's Metropol. The duo Marios and Julia provide the right Mediterranean sound on the open-air stage with bouzouki and guitar. They will play traditional rebetiko, the “Greek blues”, but also folk music from Crete and songs by Mikis Theodorakis, the most famous Greek composer of the 20th century.  Susanne Oberforcher
Theatrical walk: Auguste Fickert
Experiencing history and the people who appear in it in a humoristic way – that's what you can do on a guided theme walk today. The tour guide Susanne Oberforcher leads you through Vienna around 1900 in historical clothing. This time she will slip into the role of the defiant teacher and women's rights activist Auguste Fickert. The walk leads through the Cottage quarter to Türkenschanzpark and sharpens the view of the development of women's rights such as equal pay for equal work or universal women's suffrage, for which Fickert campaigned vehemently.

 Karine Label
Afro-Haitian Dance
Haitian dances are strongly connected to myths, gods and supernatural beings. Today, Haitian-born Karine LaBel gives an insight into the dance culture of the Caribbean island in the arcade courtyard of the Rathaus. The snake dance, which has a special significance in Haiti and symbolises the connection between life and death, is demonstrated, too. With live percussion, you can sway to the rhythm of the snake with elegant, undulating movements, get to know traditional dances such as the spider dance or water dance and learn more about the Haitian dance philosophy.

Community picnic
The Puchsbaumpark will probably not be known even to experienced Viennese, but that could change on Tuesday: at a neighbourhood picnic, where everyone may bring what they like, you can have a relaxed chat and get to know other people. There are several sunny benches in the park, and some food will also be provided by the Caritas’ “Community Cooking” kitchen in the nearby Ankerbrotfabrik. The picnic is part of a series of pleasant, free of charge summer events organised by AK – there's also open-air cinema and guided city walks, for example.

Everyman’s Jews.
100 years of the Salzburg Festival – interestingly, many Viennese were co-founders of the famous festival. And: many of them were Jewish and had to flee Nazi Austria from 1938. Starting today, the new exhibition at the Jewish Museum pays tribute to them and shows works of art and everyday objects of the literary Berta Zuckerkandl, the conductor Bruno Walter or, of course, Max Reinhardt, the legendary director. Exciting: large parts of Reinhardt's estate have remained in New York, and now objects from it that have never been shown before are on display.

575Sagmeister
Old inn, revitalised! After years of vacancy, Paulusplatz now offers great food. With regional ingredients, of course – the 575 in the name indicates the kilometre radius from which the products come – and with reference to Viennese cuisine. But with a twist! The (terrific) goulash comes in a dark chocolate beer juice and the courgette salad is served with lemon dressing. The look is fun too: the old wooden benches remain, but have been reupholstered in a wild mix of fabrics. Huge peacocks adorn the back wall of the restaurant, and the antlers on the wall are bright red. Very, very cool!
