"Heya Girls!"
So, my dears, it's that time again: the summer break is just around the corner! Not only the city needs its beauty sleep now and then, your CitySpotterGirl needs it too ;-) And as is tradition by now, I serve you, as always in this issue, the best restaurant and shop tips of the last months instead of the weekly events. And I'll tell you three insider tips that you absolutely must check out this summer: all of them gourmet pop-ups, all of them outdoors. With “Hans and Fritz”, Austria's only 3-star chef Juan Amador and vintner Fritz Wieninger run a pop-up wine tavern below the Krapfenwaldlbad. With a sensational view of Vienna and anything but ordinary! The “Lord of the Snails” Andreas Gugumuck has opened a cool garden bar with kitchen in the middle of vegetables and fields (photo). Please try “Snail & Chips”! And at the Cobenzl you can feast on a pop-up picnic in the vineyard and relax while watch the time pass by. So take care, dear ladies and enjoy the summer!

Wishing you a wonderful August,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Handdruck
Handdruck
Whoa, first thing when entering are the Monophonics blasting their psychedelic soul opera. Meanwhile, master of the shop Martin Novak is in the back silkscreen-printing. His prints, which are based on wood engravings from old encyclopaedias, hang up to the ceiling. Lots of animal life in all colours: among others a series of endangered species from koalas to baboons, the proceeds being donated to climate protection. The nostalgic (and currently very trendy) motifs can also be found on shirts and notebooks. Right now, the Styrian is working on unusual flower pots. And next to his prints a friend sells handmade bags: really pretty!

 Atelier Karasinski
Salon-Café Adlerhof
I’m in love. Firstly, because an old inn has been rebuilt in a magnificent way – with a nostalgic salon, a spiral staircase leading nowhere and the gorgeous Bergl frescoes from 1770 from Laudon Castle, which were transferred here by wallpaper. And secondly, because they really value food and ingredients here. So when you've finished looking around, we recommend a fancy breakfast with pastries from the Wachau region or the dumpling trilogy for dinner. By the way, the whole thing is called Salon-Café and Brot-Beisl because the Adlerhof in the entrance area is also a local supplier of baked goods, eggs and specialities. Wow!

Whether you call them Teigtaschen, tortellini or dumplings – these stuffed things really exist all over the world. And so do many fans across the globe. Near the University of Vienna in a handsome “fast food” venue, they now play the leading role. You order a small or big portion, wait a moment and are then blessed with some freshly steamed dumplings. They are filled with braised pork belly and kimchi as topping, with spicy shrimps and wakame seaweed or pumpkin with balsamic vinegar. Everything tastes delicious, is super-fast and of course you can have everything as take-away as well. As a dessert you can order sweet dumplings.

Hamtil & Söhne 2
Spacious, light-flooded and modern: After the shop in Herrengasse, the Hamtils' second store has now opened, too – Corona had delayed the start. The stylish store extends over two floors and brings together beautiful and original things. You will recognise Marimekko's Finnish cloth bags by their familiar flower print, the range of colourful reading glasses by Izibizi is huge and Fatboy's interior will even has its own lounge. Especially nice: the funny bags in a nostalgic bathing cap look were brought directly from Paris.

Sperling
In any case: original! The furnishing seems like a funny mix of modern and vintage pieces from your rich aunt in the country, flower curtains in front of the huge windows and gorgeous prints on the walls really do give the rooms a kind of living room atmosphere. The new restaurant in the Palais Augarten (right next to the Porcelain Museum) with its 2 terraces looks really inviting. The menu offers a lot of small dishes that can be combined. Or eaten separately if you are not that hungry. And the view of the Augarten: wonderful!

Lucy Bar at Belvedere 21
As is well known, the entrance of the 21er Haus, today called Belvedere 21, resembles a station concourse in terms of size and atmosphere. It takes a great interior designer to establish a café here that you would voluntarily go to. Architect Gregor Eichinger has managed it. With dark blue velvet chairs (they’re actually really hip) and oversized floor lamps, he has given Lucy an almost cuddly metropolitan feeling. The menu is not very big (mainly burgers, sandwiches, salads), but everything tastes pretty good. And sitting in the antechamber of art is really quite cool ;-)

 Schickeria
Schickeria
Vienna has a lot of nice stores for home accessories but now a really special one has opened. At the new Schickeria with its elegant and colourful walls you will find only beautiful things that you cannot find anywhere else in Vienna – and that you would be happy to take home. The woven lamps, for example, come from France, the colourful enamel tableware is produced by three friends in Istanbul and the poetic vintage prints are by the Danish printer The Dybdahl. By the way, it was at this point that CitySpotterGirl’s “I won’t buy anything”-resolution ended!

In the boutique with its dignified dark wood panelling, the designer's broad smile makes it a little warmer. It’s quite obvious: You are welcome here. The fashion presents itself in a reservedly minimalist manner, the colour palette ranges from black to natural tones and powdery pink. Only in between, you’ll see a splash of red or green flash up. For special occasions there are dresses made of French silk and dreamily romantic headdresses. In the back room, the completely white "White Room", you will find the casual line. A shop with Ying and Yang, so to speak.

She used to be Christian Petz’s right hand, now Heidi Neuländtner runs not one but two market stalls next to each other at the Meidlinger Markt. She needs them too – both are packed to the rafters every day. The modern Viennese cuisine she serves here is so amazing that even guests from far away make it to the market. And then they can enjoy a perfect creamy goulash or a turnip roll with quince. On Saturday, breakfast is now also served, followed by a fresh roast, followed by the dumpling specialities in the evening. Tradition rarely tastes so fresh and tasty!

 Bar Campari
Bar Campari
So far, the Goldene Quartier isn’t exactly the liveliest neighbourhood of Vienna. But now, a venue so charming has been opened that things might change. Peter Friese (Zum Schwarzen Kameel) and Campari have joined forces to bring a true Italian day bar to Vienna – interior design by top architect Matteo Thun. The result: elegant, fancy, with incredibly nice service and completely uncomplicated. Whether it’s stand-up coffee for breakfast, a quick lunch (perfect saffron risotto!), a chat with pie, aperitivo after work or a fancy dinner: Milan is now in the middle of Vienna!

Herbarium Officinale
New, elegant, inviting: all icings on the cake when it comes to health, beauty, relaxation and libido can be found at the Herbarium Officinale, the new herbs centre at Hoher Markt.  The herbal fairies that buzz around here give detailed advice and you can find the right (herbal) solution for every ailment, from homemade medicinal herbal tea blends to relaxation capsules and Yoni oil. In the chic bar area, they offer power snacks: home-brewed cola, energy chocolate balls or a basic immune soup. The motto: feel good all around! This also resonates in the meditation room downstairs. Daydreaming underneath the city!

Bakery and Café Öfferl
CitySpotterGirl has detoured before just for the Semmeln from the bakery Öfferl, and the cruffins (genius mix of croissant and muffin) maker her lose her mind completely. So it’s a great joy that the unique organic bakery from Weinviertel finally has a shop in Vienna. But the best thing is yet to come: adjoined to the shop and exhibition bakery is a chic café. Furnished in an absolutely minimalist style with concrete, only organic meals on the menu. Breakfast and sandwiches (Madame Crousto with pumpkin and sheep cheese!) are delicious, the menu of the day rocks. I’ll be dreaming of the mushrooms and carrot cream for a long time…

rudolf Vienna
The Austro-knitting label rudolf, which was founded in 2014 by Lisa Mladek and Antonia Maedel, now got its own shop! In the former Sight store on Kirchengasse, fashionistas have 60 hip, puritanically furnished square metres to explore cool (unisex) knit trousers, dresses, scarves and jumpers – fringed and not-fringed, as well as pillows and plaids. They also have some loden pieces. Everything is produced by hand in small manufactories within a radius of just 150 kilometres. Even the raw yarn gets its natural colour-shine in their own dye house in the 23rd district, from “Lobster” to “Krapp”.

Schlawiener
Modern inn replaces old tavern. That was the plan. And just as they were about to open up, the Corona catastrophe happened. Worst timing imaginable, but after a few weeks with take away, you can now finally admire the graffiti of the British artist David Shillinglaw on the walls of the Schlawiener "in the flesh". Or immediately dig in to the food. The motto there is: down-to-earth but creative, mushroom Beuschl ragout made from king oyster mushrooms, ramen in Viennese style or very classic beef cheeks taste great and are fun. It's super cosy here and really nice.

Tessuti
The three likable ladies at Tessuti are so busy, they rarely look up from their embroidery- and sewing machines. They make towels, linens, cloth baskets, pillows and table sets – everything special, everything handmade, everything really beautiful. It’s obvious these three know a thing or two about quality: the weaving mill is in Italy, the ceramics are painted on by hand in Vienna and the linen fabrics come from Austria and Denmark. You can either shop in the spacious store right away or have the living accessories sewn, combined and embroidered according to your personal wishes. Neat!

Brunch at Motto
The Motto is usually for night-owls, open until 4:00 am and so on. But since some time, the Viennese nightlife hit actually opens its doors already in the morning. At least on the weekends. Behind the inconspicuous metal door, a sumptuous breakfast awaits you in the green velvet wonderland. The motto: go big or go home, they serve strong stuff like Portobello Eggslut (burgers with scrambled eggs and mushrooms) or Benny The Egg Addict (60 minute egg with spinach and sauce hollandaise). Belgian waffles and baked sweet potatoes await the sweet tooth camp. Plus: super nice service!

Kruste & Krume
A bit peculiar but a delicious Corona side effect: suddenly everyone makes their own bread. For hobby bakers that would like to get professional baguettes and rolls out of their own oven, there is the perfect specialty shop – Kruste & Krume in the historic Mühlen area. The grocery store of journalist and author Barbara van Melle offers everything you need to make your bread happy. The beautiful old-building shop offers the best baker's flours in town as well as all kinds of ingredients such as bread spices, malt and seeds. Plus: accessories à la French fermentation baskets and baguette cloth. Really great!

Riva Officina
The female half of Vienna actually knows Mr D'Ambrosio mainly for his elegant shoe shops. But because he is half Neapolitan, he has also brought us wonderful pizza places with the Rivas. And now the next trick: right across from the Riva Favorita, he has opened a pretty trattoria celebrating southern Italian cuisine away from pizza. We’ve never had something quite like this in Vienna before – and it tastes heavenly. Fritto misto as a (huge) starter is incredible, the Pasta A'Genoves as well and you just want to bury yourself in the Babamisú for dessert. I’m in love ;-)

PV Vienna
The fashion youngsters in Vienna really know their stuff! For two years, designer Viktoria Peschl has been running her classic label “PV Vienna”, now there’s her studio shop. Between bales of cloth, figurines and nostalgic mirrors, style fans can now admire the new collection coming at you in a beautifully timeless, cosy and fancy way. High-quality fabrics (like Vieböck linen or the fibre of the future Tenzel from Upper Austria), straight cuts, lots of pinstripes, blouses and skirt wrapping. Dogenhof
That house itself is first-class! For years, the 1899 "Venetian Palazzo" has been the home of the analogue-manufacturer Supersense and its café, loved by CitySpotterGirl. Now the venue next door was finally vacant, they did some reconstruction, tore the wall down – and the Dogenhof was finished. With a unique concept for Vienna: they cook exclusively over an open fireplace and with wood-burning ovens! And right in the middle of the restaurant. On the oven monster they grill over logs of wood or roast things in the embers, everything cold is served raw or fermented. Sounds unusual, tastes great (the pork belly!) and is so hip!
