editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Mimi doesn’t go to bed without a whodunnit, and to be honest, neither do I. With this, I’m an active element of the statistics because every fourth book sold is a crime novel. And there’s no shortage of supply, the Austrian crime novel scene is still booming. This week, you have a live opportunity to convince yourself of this. The Hauptbücherei (Central Library) on Gürtel turns into a crime thriller scene on Thursday and Friday: from the Vienna-thriller to the Alpes-whodunnit, there are intense investigations going on during the “Krimitage”. The stars of the scene are going to be there, too. On the first night, Beate Maxian, Stefan Slupetzky, and Jewish Studies professor Gerhard Langer will read from their current books (with a focus on Vienna), on the second night, I’m particularly looking forward to Herbert Dutzler and his entertaining Salzkammergut crime novels. Tip: do bring your girlfriends, so that the way home won’t be quite so scary ;-)

Wishing you a thrilling week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Flea Markets in Fünfhaus and Nussdorf
The organisers have known each other since the births of their first children and that was when they organised their first flea market. Naturally, they didn’t stop with children’s wear, they also offer heaps of clothes for “big people” by now, among them are many hip and barely worn items and accessories at great bargain prices from 1 euro! The girlfriends flea market also has a nice location: the hip concept store Eben44. Bela B is reading at Rabenhof
Literature instead of cool beats: Bela B Felsenheimer, the legendary drummer of the iconic band “Die Ärzte”, is introducing his first novel at Rabenhof today. And it is – not surprisingly – pretty funny, a little bit brutal and quite strange, if you listen to the critics. The story is set in the eponymic village Scharnow, a village north of Berlin, and that’s the scene of the crime, figuratively-speaking. Gunmen lie on lookout, murderous books cause bloody devastation, and a Syrian intern stands up for a Manga girl. Better snap up tickets quickly!

Nicole Jäger
Be it relationships, sucking in your belly during sex, seven-eighth trousers, body-shaming, visits to the gynaecologist, or your own reflection in the mirror – pretty much everybody knows these catastrophes ;-) Nicole Jäger wraps them in humour and uses many absurd facets of femininity in her second stand-up show. And her programme “Not perfect” isn’t just funny but also touching. For the Hamburg-born knows only too well the constant feeling of not being perfect: she found herself in a wheelchair for a year as a teenager and lost 170 kilos after weighing 340.

Sprengkörperballade
Adventurous and linguistically dense: the theatre play “Sprengkörperballade” reappraises the story of three women generations. The mother Djana is restaging the separation of the father with her younger daughter over and over again, the older daughter and her best friend are cruising through the city looking for perfect moments, and the age-old ghost-sisters Cookie and Fuzzie lustfully torment themselves with endless children’s games. The play was written by Viennese Magdalena Schrefel and directed by the Swiss director Claudia Bossard. Today’s the premiere!

Oliver’s Teigwerkstatt
We totally get how someone born with the scent of bread in his nose can never do anything else ;-) Oliver Gradwohl, offspring of the Gradwohl dynasty, now does his own thing: in 2018, the trained master-baker took over the four former branches of “Mühlenbrot”, all of them unremarkable mini shops at top locations – three in the first district, one on Alser Straße. There the young baker sells his specially developed (and really tasty!) pastry, almost everything is made from matured spelt dough. Apart from crispy Weckerl and bread, he also makes Danish pastry and delicious pie!

For fans of Italy! Just a few steps down from the lobby of the Ritz Carlton and you find yourself in an elegant, multifunctional venue: breakfasting, downing a quick espresso, having a fine dinner, getting a drink, holding a meeting – all this is possible. The Sicilian top chef Ciccio Sultano has conceived the cuisine, which is why the Italian dishes taste simply delicious – from Arancini (saffron rice balls) to Ravioli with lamb ragout. And since it is also a bar, a specially designed Negroni is rolled across the Pastamara during Aperitivo time and the cocktails are mixed right in front of the guests.
