editorial

"Heya Girls!"
When she was 12, she knew that she wanted to become an artist. That was back in rural Wisconsin. At the beginning of the 1920s she was already the star of the New York art scene. When she was 80 she went on her first trip around the world and when she died in 1986 at the age of 99 she left behind more than 2 000 works. Georgia O’Keeffe shaped and influenced the American art world like no other woman before (and after) – she even anticipated minimalism and pop art. Her most famous pictures show large flowers that seem incredibly “bodily” and often erotic. When I was spending this summer in New York I was really looking forward to finally seeing the original pictures of these flowers. Well, a wasted effort! The pictures were all on loan – to the biggest retrospective that Europe has ever seen up until now. And after London this sensational exhibition is opening this week at the Bank Austria Art Forum. Part of the exhibition is also the “Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1” (photo): with almost 42 million Euros the most expensive picture by a female artist that was ever auctioned. Now I do get to see it after all ;-)

Wishing you a happy week

Marina Hoermanseder Christmas pop up
Marina Hoermanseder became famous overnight with her bondage look and her fetish clothing, which Lady Gaga and Rihanna like to buy as well. The past year was pretty much a run of success for the Vienna-born designer who lives in Berlin: designs for Austrian Airlines, a huge deal with “Hello Kitty” – and as we know as of this week she will also be designing the new uniforms of the Austrian Post. Interesting creative balancing act! But first of all you can buy her most recent collection in Vienna for four days: and next to sexy corsages you can also find pieces suitable for everyday life ;-)

Palais Coburg Winter Days
As a citizen of Vienna you will probably rarely get to spend a night at the noble Hotel Palais Coburg, but you should treat yourself to a little after work chill out. The Coburg is inviting to the Winter Days in the garden: roasting marshmallows over the fire, enjoying eggnog and punsch, with hot dogs (to make yourself) and hash browns to satisfy the small hunger, hot chocolate and pecan tart. Every Thursday and Friday starting at 16:00. To hold off the cold temperatures there will be cozy blankets, open fire and warming sounds – secluded on top of the bastion but still in the city center. Everyone deserves to spoil herself once in a while ;-)

 Aroniahof Kober
Christmas market “Goods from the farm"
No, for once there will not be designer pieces and trendy X-Mas presents for sale. Instead, you can find stuff that makes your stomach and refrigerator happy. 19 farmers from all over Austria will show city-gourmets for four days where the famous “Most” comes from (and many other delicacies). Part of it: the market garden Ehmaier with chili products, the organic farm Brenner with ancient grains and fresh bread, the Hirschmann family with chutneys and the aronia farm Kober with aronia specialties. Everything to be enjoyed then and there or at home. And the location at the Theatermuseum is definitely worth seeing as well!

New: Santa Croce underground
The Heiligenkreuzer courtyard is one of the CitySpotterGirl’s favorite spots. Historically incredibly interesting, in the city center and still unbelievably quiet. But deep down beneath the old walls something is happening! A meeting place for theater, concerts and art has just opened: the new “Art-Underground” encompasses 6 cellar vaults on 4 levels (!), covering more than 1 300 sqm. Today a Mimamusch Christmas-special is going on there: culture served in small bites, to be experienced up close. Until late at night there will be short theater play performances, accompanied by a devil’s guitarist and a trapeze show.

Christmas market of DIY-lovers
The resolution of the CitySpotterGirl to put more self-made presents underneath the Christmas tree couldn’t be fulfilled once again, because time flies twice as fast during advent. But there are (thank you!) people who manage to eagerly crochet, knit, cook and bake even during the most stressful time of the year. At the district office Margareten you can buy all kinds of lovingly self-made stuff today. The market is organized by the association “Station Wien”. A great opportunity to support a good initiative and also fulfill another resolution: to shop locally!

The CitySpotterGirl at the BookQuarter
Let’s go check out books! At the MuseumsQuarter, to be exact at the Arena21, at the freiraum and the Ovalhalle there will be book fairs happening this weekend for small independent publishing houses. The exhibitors are from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and there will be more than 90 of them. And one of them is – of course! – the CitySpotterGirl with her awesome Vienna-guides. She will be bringing her most recent publications and also a great bargain: the “Wiener Entdeckungen” volumes 1-4 will be available at the fair price of 10 € each! Additionally to the book sale there will be readings and book signings.

Graphic Pop Up Pelzgasse
Yes, a nice and chill event far away from the usual Christmas rumble! The new association “Salon Fünfhaus” will be opening the doors to their studios at Pelzgasse today – a chance to look around, talk, eat cookies and drink mulled wine – and to shop. Because at the one-day graphic pop up you can buy block prints, other prints and drawings of the artists located there. Julia Faber, Katharina Ralser or Käthe Schönle are covering different styles between art and illus with their pieces. A very nice idea for presents, particularly if you are looking for something special!

Groovy guitars, a driving brush drum and the sparkly sound of a mischievous lindy-hop-lady: after their Swing debut album “Small”, the smallest big band of the world is presenting its second piece of work called “Wild” today. Marina & The Kats are taking the audience on a happily swinging trip to the time of Django Reinhardts and Cab Calloways, of the divas and the crooners, of the radio shows and the revue theater. Their songs are full of charm and wit and they are spreading so many good vibes, that you just have to dance. Listen and swing in here!

Hanna Trachten fashion show
Approaching Christmas and the upcoming ball season, there are many opportunities for you to buy festive costumes. So let’s enter the silkily shimmering fray: today at the fashion show of the traditional family business from Salzburg you be inspired by the newest “Trachten” (traditional Austrian clothing) designs fit for balls and afterwards you can also try the pieces on and buy them. This weekend 140 designers are presenting many present ideas at the Marx Halle: adaptable bags from Sumday Vienna, unusual wood core watches, mystical fashion from Ylva or sweets from the cake-pop manufacturer Pop.Cut. By the time you are ready to go home both your bags and your stomachs will be filled – numerous street food stands ranging from Sanfish-sandwiches to Omnom burgers will make sure of that. Fox and Bones
Just perfect to dive in and relax! As the conceptual-folk duo “Fox and Bones” Sarah Vitort and Scott Gilmore combine soft melodies and complex lyrical elements, the accompanying music is low-key and strong at the same time. In their hometown Portland they have been considered two of the best singer/songwriters for quite a while, today they are performing their recently published debut album at the Haus der Musik.  Burgtheater
Burgtheater – looking behind the scenes
Usually the audience is captivated by what is going on on stage. Now the Burgtheater is changing the perspective for one hour: the audience can catch a glimpse behind the scenes during a guided tour. It starts at the ticket office in the foyer, then leads up to the stands and the stage, where stories of historic highlights are being told. Afterwards the participants can watch the rehearsal stage turn into the showcase stage, then they are wandering along the changing stage set and end up downstairs, where the wires for the evening’s performance are secretly being pulled. Fascinating change of perspective!

Nighttime-tour at the zoo
Very unfortunately it gets dark really early this time of the year. Which is a little depressing, but also has its advantages: for example that the nighttime-tour at the zoo starts earlier than during the summer. After all the regular visitors have left the zoo you have the chance to wander around the dark realm of sleeping and nocturnal animals in a small group – equipped with Swarovski night-vision glasses and under qualified supervision. Among other animals you can see Egyptian fruit bats soaring through the air like ghosts while walking through the hippo-house.

„Frei heraus!“ A stutter play
A very personal play, based on the very own experiences of the director: the 23-year-old student of film Simon Dworaczek has been stuttering since his early childhood. When he was in Kindergarten he discovered that he didn’t stutter when playing a role – and fled to the theater. Now he is processing his own stutter-story in his diploma production. Is stuttering really a defect? What does it feel like? How does our society deal with it? And why can’t any weakness also be your strength? The result is a comic play about being different and searching for your own identity.

amour fou*
Love led “Madame amour fou” Astrid Bleier to Berlin a few years ago. And there she also fell in love with the beautiful underwear from “blush”. Back in Vienna the thought of the sensual but also comfortable lace pieces just wouldn’t leave her alone – and Vienna was definitely in need of a charming lingerie boutique. Until now! The shop in the old vaults of the Barnabiten monastery is not big, but very high (with a golden cupola!) and only stocks small and sustainably thinking European labels ranging from “Swedish Stockings” to the delicate German lingerie from “Aikyou”. Sexy, flattering and very comfortable to wear!

Marco Serra’s piccola cucina
Because of his catering service and his (often funny) cooking classes, Marco Serra has been well known in Vienna for a while. And now the Sardinian-born kitchen genius opened his first restaurant: the piccola cucina, which in reality is not so “piccola/small”. Two spacious rooms, a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and a mix between industrial style and Italian coziness (yes, it really works somehow) appear very inviting. The cooking is of course classically Italian, often using the Mama’s recipes. Savory lunch meals, elegant dinner menu and very fair prices! Grazie!
