editorial

"Heya Girls!"
This woman kicked ass: she speculated on the New York stock exchange in the 1880s, corresponded daily with half of Europe and advised her best friend, Britain's Queen Victoria. Through intelligence and skill, Clementine d'Orleans became the first royal influencer of her era. With her style and taste, she also shaped her century – and did so from Vienna. Born in 1817, the daughter of the French King Louis Philippe had come to Vienna through her marriage to Duke August of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry and was the first to move into the Palais Coburg, which today houses the famous 5-star hotel. From here she made politics, business and reforms – some of which still have an impact today. For example, together with her personal physician Carl Braun, she gave the impetus for the world's first academic chair of gynaecology in Vienna, a milestone in women's medicine. For four months now, a new exhibition at Palais Coburg will shed light on the fascinating life of its first female inhabitant. Who, by the way, had many epithets: “Nightmare of the Tsar”, “Spectre of the Emperor of Austria” and “Bismarck's insomnia” are just a few of them ;-) True girl power!

Wishing you a royal week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Jonathan Meese
He calls himself a cultural terrorist and would certainly pass for a scandalous painter. Jonathan Meese's current talk round is quite civilised, but certainly no less bizarre and funny, because it takes place with the mother of the provocation sensation herself. Brigitte Meese was a foreign language correspondent, office manager and mother of three children between Tokyo, Hamburg and Berlin. This already makes you guess that the 93-year-old's life was zero amounts of boring. All facets of it will be discussed – at least 127 hours of best entertainment guaranteed ;-)

Clothes that are done for after a few washes and end up in landfills. Thousands of products that are designed to be used only once. Topics that will be discussed heatedly at the re:pair festival. What initiatives are being taken in Austria and the EU to stop the throwaway system and what measures are needed to make production and consumption socially and environmentally responsible – this is what Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler will be discussing today in a panel discussion with experts such as consumer researcher Nina Tröger and circular economy expert Tamina Panhuber!

There will be humming, hissing, buzzing and belting again! Nuschin Vossoughi, director of the Theater am Spittelberg, invites you to the a capella festival Voicemania again. The first event will be Balcanto in the inner-city: for one afternoon artists will warble from balconies and church galleries in the city centre: from the vocal band Hermann to the fabulous guys from England WE3 to the African Soul of the Insingizi. All unamplified and without instruments.  In the evening, the six American musicians of Duwendé conquer the Theater am Spittelberg and entertain with R&B!

E Bistarde
Roma have been living in Austria for centuries. Nevertheless, antiziganism is often still commonplace. With the festival “E Bistarde – Vergiss mein nicht”, the Roma community wants to set an example and reconcile cultural differences. Today, for instance, the Italian activist Luna De Rosa is showing a caravan installation covered with manifestos as a reminder of Roma ancestors and Holocaust survivors, but also as a collective space of diverse Roma identities. The festival also offers new films, theatre and concerts every day. There's also a fortune teller ;-)

Leading Ladies of Silent Cinema
They were beautiful, they were talented, they were impressive – but they are still great unknowns today. Yet women have played a decisive role in shaping the medium of film from the very beginning, in front of, but especially behind the camera. Right now, the Filmarchiv gives the stars of silent film the chance to shine once again. Today’s motto: All spots on Louise Brooks! The show her classic “Pandora's Box”, with which the then “most beautiful woman in the world” with her iconic smooth bob attracted the first lesbian gaze in film history. Revolutionary!

Loft-Style by Stalewski
They are probably the coolest way to connect rooms in a transparent way: Loft doors. Whether as classic double and single doors or as swinging pivot doors, the steel-framed glass room dividers radiate New York flair par excellence! The Stalewski company is a professional for such custom-made industrial style must-haves. Though they actually come from Germany, they are making a weekend-long pop-up stop in our favourite city to show loft doors, shutters and shelves. A great opportunity to bestow upon your own four walls the absolute coolness factor!

Plucking, chording and making music has begun at the international guitar festival! The melodic-temperamental plucking party was launched by mastermind guitarist Julia Malischnig. Dr. Bruce Lipton
Knowledge is power. We've all heard that before. But what about the knowledge of the “self”? This is exactly what today's one-day seminar by the well-known cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton is all about. He will take participants on a journey from the microcosm of the cell to the macrocosm of the mind and reveal revolutionary scientific findings that illuminate a great merging of the powerful trinity “body-mind-soul”. For those who would like to learn more about this in advance: On the evening before, Lipton will give a lecture on “The Power of the Mind over Genes”.

Wendy McNeill
Wendy McNeill from Sweden is basically the natural scientist among musicians: When a large fire completely destroyed her neighbourhood, everything was suddenly missing – the wind in the pine trees, the buzzing of insects and bird calls. It was only a year after the fire that she slowly experienced new growth and greenery, which inspired her to write her album “First There Were Feathers” about the beauty, mystery and resilience of birds. This ode to nature sounds like folk-noir, jazz with echoes of the Beatles, Björk and Radiohead and can be heard live today at Haus der Musik!

One City. One Book.
Literary enthusiasts have been waiting for it: The free book campaign “Eine Stadt. Ein Buch.” is starting again! This year, “The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink has been chosen as a free reading treat. The moving story of a high school graduate who falls in love with 36-year-old Hanna Schmitz. During National Socialism she is forced to become a warden in a concentration camp, he studies law after her sudden disappearance and then attends her trial as a student. Today Schlink opens the campaign in the Main Library and tomorrow the distribution campaign of the 100,000 free books will start throughout Vienna!

That Lore and Werner from the Habari Design Store are big fans of Japan became clear at the latest in 2022 when they opened their offshoot “Habari Japan”. Having just returned from their last trip to the Land of the Rising Sun, the two aesthetes brought home a very special holiday souvenir: handmade Kokeshi dolls created by Japanese artists. The small, wooden dolls are a symbol of luck and are supposed to fulfil wishes. Starting today, 100 of them will do just that for 100 days in the beautiful vaults of the Habari Flagship Store!

Winter at the MQ
Temperatures are currently still humane, even for cold-o-phobes, and yet it's already getting Christmassy! At least in the MuseumsQuartier, where the inner courtyards are being transformed into a glittering outdoor delight with the light projection “Winter of Love” by the artist starsky. The six-week Xmas spectacle opens today with punch sipping for a good cause – and the Viennese DJane Electric Indigo sends her futuristic techno sounds into the night sky. Also back, of course: gastro, winter race and the popular ice stock rink.

On Coffeehouses
Yes, we are proud of our coffee houses! Some of them could almost pass for a second living room... A phenomenon of cosiness that does not date back to just yesterday, as author Stefan Franke now proves. Using curious historical newspaper articles, he shows the unvarnished face of the Viennese coffee house of yesteryear. It's about scandals due to torn out journal pages, piccolos being beaten up by the café owner, professional carousers and mix-ups on a blind date. You can listen for free and, appropriately enough, in the cosy ambience of Café Korb!

“Oh, what nice scents!” is probably the first thought upon entering the NaturoCounter. Here, natural soaps (such as sea buckthorn, blood orange or mango & tangerine) are lined up with all kinds of care oils, bath chocolates and scented candles. But the eye is also pampered in the concept store with its manufactory character, like with handmade soap dishes with real flower imprints, ceramic flowers, jewellery and tableware. Incidentally, the nature temple is run by a highly likeable group of four girls, who like to encourage family and friends to join in, which is why there is a nice story to go with almost every product.

Kutsch
The Kutschkermarkt is one of the finest places in town for gourmets anyway. So the Kutsch fits right in. The beautifully renovated corner restaurant offers upscale, modern inn cuisine for lunch (at quite reasonable prices), and in the evening things get a bit more international: bouillabaisse of local fish (amazing), bavette of veal, goose with quince. And it’s also the little things that demonstrate how contemporary and creative the cuisine is – not a gram of sugar is used for the chocolate mousse for dessert, the delicate sweetness comes exclusively from pressed cherry stone oil. Nice: on Sunday there's Sunday roast!
